Before paying for a used or refurbished MacBook, verify its exact configuration, check the battery and hardware, inspect the machine in person, and make sure the seller removes Activation Lock. No single check proves a Mac is problem-free, but these steps help reveal mismatches and transfer blockers before money changes hands.
1. Verify the exact MacBook configuration
- On the Mac, open Apple menu > About This Mac. Note the model name, chip or processor, memory, and serial number shown.
- For additional detail, hold the Option key while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information. Check the model identifier and available hardware details, including storage.
- Compare those details with the seller’s listing and Apple’s Mac model-identification information. Make sure the configuration matches the advertised model rather than relying on appearance or the seller’s description alone.
If the serial number on the case or packaging differs from the serial shown by the running Mac, ask the seller for an explanation and any repair documentation. Apple notes that a logic-board replacement can cause this difference. A serial-number match by itself does not establish ownership or a complete repair history.
2. Check battery condition and cycle count
- Open Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > System Report, then select Hardware > Power. (Labels can vary by macOS version.)
- Read the battery’s cycle count and condition. Compare the cycle count with the limit for that specific Mac model using Apple’s battery cycle-count guidance.
- When possible, test the Mac unplugged during ordinary use to see whether it operates as expected for the inspection. A reported condition and cycle count cannot establish real-world runtime on their own.
Cycle limits differ by model, so there is no single count that applies to every MacBook. Apple says its batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of original charge capacity at their maximum cycle count; this is a design benchmark, not a promise about a particular used Mac’s current capacity or runtime.
3. Run Apple Diagnostics
Ask the seller to run Apple Diagnostics before you buy, if they will allow it. It can help identify the potential source of a hardware issue, but a pass does not prove every feature works perfectly or rule out intermittent faults. Follow Apple’s Apple Diagnostics instructions for the Mac’s processor type:

- Apple silicon: Shut down the Mac. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then press and hold Command-D.
- Intel: Start the Mac and immediately press and hold D. If that does not work, try Option-D.
Ask to see the result and note any reference codes or issues reported. If the seller will not permit a diagnostic, treat that as an unanswered check—not proof that the Mac has a fault.
4. Check coverage, but do not treat it as a condition report
Enter the Mac’s serial number in Apple’s Check Coverage service to see coverage and benefits associated with that serial. The result is tied to the serial number and the time of the lookup. It does not confirm the seller owns the Mac, disclose a complete repair history, prove the hardware’s physical condition, or establish that Activation Lock or management controls are absent.

5. Make sure Activation Lock is cleared before paying
Ask the seller to turn off Find My, remove the Mac from their Apple Account, and erase it. If possible, proceed through setup far enough to confirm it does not ask for the previous owner’s Apple Account. Apple explains that Activation Lock can require the associated account credentials to erase or reactivate a Mac.
If the seller cannot clear Activation Lock, do not treat the Mac as ready for transfer. Do not pay on the assumption that you will be able to remove the lock later.

6. Test the parts software checks cannot verify
Inspect the Mac in person and test the features you expect to use. Note damage, faults, or missing items, and compare them with the seller’s description.
- Display: Look for cracks, dead or stuck pixels, flickering, and uneven brightness.
- Keyboard and trackpad: Test keys and trackpad clicks and movement.
- Audio and camera: Play sound through the speakers and check that the camera works.
- Ports and charging: Test available ports and confirm the Mac charges with the supplied charger.
- Hinges and case: Open and close the display, and look for dents, cracks, or other damage.
- Included items: Confirm which charger or accessories are included and whether that matches the listing.
Apple’s documentation does not set a standardized cosmetic grading method for used MacBooks. Judge the specific machine against the seller’s stated condition and any return or warranty terms.

7. Compare listings on the same evidence
When choosing between more than one MacBook, compare each listing using the same checks rather than comparing model names alone:

If you prefer a refurbished purchase, Apple’s refurbished-products information describes its refurbished products and Mac availability. Compare the terms and configuration of the particular offer; refurbished status alone does not answer every question about whether it suits your needs.
