To charge an iPhone wirelessly, connect a Qi-certified charger to power, place the iPhone face-up in its recommended charging area, and check for the charging icon. iPhone 8 and later support Qi charging. MagSafe adds magnetic alignment and, on certain iPhone and charger combinations, higher peak charging power—but it is not required for wireless charging.
Charge an iPhone with a Qi wireless charger
- Connect the Qi-certified charger to power. Use the included power adapter or the one the charger maker recommends.
- Place the charger on a level surface, unless its manufacturer specifies another position.
- Set the iPhone face-up in the center of the pad or in the maker’s recommended charging area.
- Wait a few seconds and look for the charging icon in the status bar.
Qi is an open, universal charging standard created by the Wireless Power Consortium. Qi chargers may also be built into cars, cafes, hotels, airports, and furniture. Third-party chargers differ in performance and functionality; Apple says many Qi-certified chargers can charge an iPhone running current iOS at up to 7.5W, but that is not a guaranteed rate for every charger or situation. Apple’s wireless charging guidance explains the general setup.
Charge with MagSafe
- Connect the MagSafe Charger to a compatible USB-C power source before placing the iPhone on it. Apple says this allows the charger to verify that it is safe to provide maximum power. If the iPhone was already on the charger, remove it, wait three seconds after connecting power, then place it back.
- Set the charger face-up on a flat surface, clear of metal objects and other foreign material.
- Place a supported iPhone or MagSafe case on the charger. Magnets align supported models. For another Qi-compatible iPhone, center it face-up and check for the charging indicator.
Do not leave a wallet between the iPhone and charger. Keep cards, access badges, passports, and key fobs away from the charging area because their magnetic strips or RFID chips may be damaged.
Which iPhones support Qi and MagSafe?
Apple’s MagSafe instructions, updated October 1, 2026, identify iPhone 12 through iPhone 18 Pro models, plus iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, as MagSafe models designed for faster, more efficient charging. Apple lists iPhone 16e, iPhone 11 models, iPhone X, iPhone XS models, iPhone XR, and iPhone 8 models as examples of Qi-compatible devices that are not MagSafe models. MagSafe can still charge other Qi-compatible iPhones when positioned correctly, but their power and charge times differ. Apple’s MagSafe charging information has the compatibility and power details.

In practical terms, an iPhone does not need MagSafe to charge wirelessly: Qi is the broad compatibility option, while MagSafe provides magnetic alignment on supported models. A MagSafe charger’s advertised peak wattage does not by itself tell you how fast a particular iPhone will charge.
How fast MagSafe charging can be
Apple’s peak-power figures are conditional on the iPhone model, charger, adapter, and system conditions. They are not promises of a specific time to full charge. The following summarizes Apple’s October 1, 2026 MagSafe instructions:

Apple says the A2140 charger can operate more slowly with a minimum 12W (5V/2.4A) adapter. The table’s groupings and requirements are model-specific; do not assume that a different iPhone, charger part number, or adapter will reach the same peak. Apple also notes that actual power varies with the iPhone model, adapter wattage, and system conditions. Accessories connected to the iPhone can change the applicable limits, so consult Apple’s current table for that setup.
Why wireless charging may be slow or stop
- The iPhone is off-center: Reposition it in the middle of a Qi pad or the charger maker’s recommended area. On a flat mat, vibration from notifications can shift the phone and interrupt alignment.
- A case or object is in the way: Remove thick, metal, or battery cases if charging is slow. Clear objects from between the phone and charger.
- The phone is warm: Some warmth is expected. Move the phone and charger to a cooler location if it becomes too warm; battery software may limit charging above 80 percent until the temperature falls.
- MagSafe power conditions are not met: Check the iPhone model, MagSafe Charger part number, adapter wattage and output profile, and connection order. A cable accessory connected to the phone can also affect the applicable limit.
- The iPhone is connected to wired power: When connected to USB, Lightning, or USB-C power, the iPhone charges through that connector rather than wirelessly.
Safety and regional charging notes
Wireless charging uses magnetic induction. Keep credit cards, security badges, passports, and key fobs out from between the phone and charger. The phone or charger may become slightly warm during charging; if the battery gets too warm, charging above 80 percent may be limited until it cools.

Apple says iPhone 15 and later users in EU or EFTA regions receive a first-use notification that wireless charging may use more power than wired charging.
