Your PlayStation Network (PSN) sign-in email, password, two-step verification (2SV), and passkey are managed from one place: Account Management → Security. You can make these changes in a web browser or use the corresponding settings on a PS5 or PS4. Changing the sign-in email signs you out on every device, while changing security methods can affect how you recover the account, so keep your new contact details and backup codes available before you start.

Where PSN security settings are located

For most account changes, sign in to Account Management in a web browser and select Security in the sidebar. Select Edit beside the setting you want to change. PlayStation may ask you to sign in again before it accepts a sensitive change.

You can also reach the security page from a console:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PS5: Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → Security.
  • PS4: Settings → Account Management → Account Information → Security.

The browser route normally exposes the complete set of account controls, including the sign-in ID (your email address), password, 2-step verification status, and passkey controls.

Before changing anything

Have access to the email address or phone used by your account unless you are following a recovery process. A sign-in email change sends a notice to the old address and signs the account out everywhere, so make sure you can sign in again with the new address.

  • Use an email inbox you control and can open immediately.
  • If you use 2SV, keep your authenticator app, phone, or saved backup codes available.
  • Do not perform a security change from a shared or public device unless you can fully sign out afterward.
  • Never give your PSN sign-in details or verification codes to another person.

Change your PSN sign-in email address

PlayStation labels the email used to sign in as the Sign-In ID (Email Address). Changing it does not create a new PSN account; it changes the credential used to access the existing account.

Steps in a web browser

  1. Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
  2. Choose Security from the sidebar.
  3. Select Edit beside Sign-In ID (Email Address).
  4. Enter the new email address and complete the prompts.
  5. Open the verification or notification message delivered during the change, if prompted, and then sign in with the new address.

What happens after the change

PlayStation says, “You’re signed out from all devices when you change your sign-in ID (email address).” Consoles, phones, browsers, and other sessions must therefore be signed in again with the new email address.

PlayStation also says, “When you change your email address you receive an email to your old email address showing your new sign-in ID (email address).” That message is an important security warning: if you did not make the change, treat it as possible account compromise and begin account recovery rather than ignoring it.

If the new address is rejected

  • Check for spelling errors and make sure the address is not already tied to another PSN account.
  • Confirm that you can receive messages from PlayStation in the new inbox.
  • Sign out of Account Management, reopen it, and try the change again if the page did not complete.
  • If you cannot access the old address or the account will not accept the change, use PlayStation’s account-recovery or Online Assistant process.

Change a PSN password while you can sign in

If you know the current password, edit it from the Password entry on the Security page.

$25 PlayStation Store Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
  • Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
  • Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.

Steps

  1. Sign in to Account Management.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Select Edit beside Password.
  4. Enter the current password if requested, then enter and confirm the new password.
  5. Save the change and sign in again wherever PSN requests it.

PlayStation specifies a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters for the new password. Use a unique password that you do not reuse for email or other services. A password manager can help create and store one without requiring you to memorize it.

Reset a forgotten PSN password

You do not need to know the old password to start a reset, but you do need access to the account’s sign-in email unless PlayStation can verify you through account support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset from the sign-in page

  1. Choose Trouble Signing in? on the PlayStation sign-in page.
  2. Select Reset your password.
  3. Enter the PSN sign-in ID email address.
  4. Open the secure reset message sent to that inbox.
  5. Follow the link and create a new password using uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  6. Return to PSN and sign in with the new password.

If the reset email does not arrive

  • Check spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders.
  • Search the mailbox for PlayStation and confirm that the sign-in ID was typed correctly.
  • Wait briefly before requesting another message; repeated requests can make it difficult to identify the current link.
  • If you no longer control the email address, do not keep guessing passwords. Use PlayStation’s Online Assistant and account-recovery process.

Turn on or change two-step verification

2SV adds a verification step after your password. PlayStation supports codes delivered by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. The code is used at sign-in and is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt.

Set up 2SV in Account Management

  1. Sign in to Account Management.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Select Edit beside 2-step Verification Status.
  4. Choose Authenticator App or Text Message.
  5. For an authenticator app, scan the displayed QR code or enter the setup information in the app. For text messages, enter the phone number requested.
  6. Enter the verification code you receive or the code generated by the app.
  7. Select Activate.
  8. Record the displayed backup codes and store them somewhere you can reach without the phone.

Set up 2SV from a console

  • PS5: Settings → Users and Accounts → Security → 2-Step Verification.
  • PS4: Settings → Account Management → Account Information → Security → 2-Step Verification.

Follow the on-screen choice between an authenticator app and text message, confirm the code, activate 2SV, and save the backup codes.

Which 2SV method should you choose?

Method What you need at sign-in Recovery dependency Important limitation
Text message Access to the registered phone number Phone access, plus saved backup codes if the phone is unavailable A lost, replaced, or disconnected number can block code delivery
Authenticator app The app on a configured device Access to that device or saved backup codes Replacing the device without transferring the app can remove code access

Neither method has a published numeric performance advantage in PlayStation’s guidance. Choose the one you can maintain reliably, and keep the backup codes separate from the phone or device that generates the normal code.

Turn off 2SV or recover when the phone is lost

Deactivate 2SV when you can still sign in

  1. Sign in to Account Management.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Select Edit beside 2-Step Verification Status.
  4. Select Deactivate and confirm.

Disabling 2SV removes that extra sign-in check. If you are changing phones rather than abandoning 2SV, set up the replacement method first and confirm that it works before removing the old one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use backup codes when the phone or authenticator is unavailable

At the verification prompt, use one of the backup codes you recorded when 2SV was activated. Treat each code as sensitive account information and do not post or send it to anyone.

When there are no backup codes

If you cannot access the phone or authenticator and have no backup codes, PlayStation directs you to identity verification through support. You will need to use the official account-help or Online Assistant route; changing the password alone cannot bypass a missing 2SV verification method.

Use a passkey instead of a PSN password

A passkey lets a supported device authenticate with its built-in screen lock or biometric method instead of asking for the PSN password each time. PlayStation says passkeys are supported on most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later.

Create a passkey

  1. Sign in to Account Management.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Enable Sign in with Passkey.
  4. Select Create a Passkey.
  5. Follow the device prompts, such as a fingerprint, face check, PIN, or screen-lock confirmation.

Manage or remove passkeys

Open Security → Manage Passkeys to view additional passkeys. Select Remove beside a passkey you no longer trust or use. Remove old entries after selling, replacing, or losing a device.

Return to password sign-in

Disable Sign in with Passkey, then create a password. This restores password-based sign-in, but you should verify that the new password works before removing the last passkey from a device you still control.

Choosing between a password, 2SV, and a passkey

Sign-in approach Convenience What recovery relies on When it may fail
Password only Works on devices that support PSN sign-in without an additional factor Sign-in email and password-reset email Forgotten password or lost email access prevents the normal reset
Password plus SMS 2SV Requires a code after the password Registered phone number and backup codes Phone loss, number change, or unavailable SMS service
Password plus authenticator-app 2SV Requires a code from the app after the password Configured authenticator device and backup codes Lost or replaced device without a transferred authenticator
Passkey Uses the device’s screen lock or biometric prompt instead of typing a password Registered passkey device and the account’s recovery options Loss of every registered passkey device without another recovery method

PlayStation’s documented choices do not include a numeric speed or security-performance comparison. The practical distinction is recovery: email, phone, authenticator device, and backup codes must remain available in whichever combination your account uses.

What to do if the account is inaccessible or compromised

You lost access to the sign-in email

Normal password-reset mail cannot help if you cannot open the sign-in inbox. Use PlayStation’s Online Assistant and account-recovery process for identity verification. Avoid creating a second account with the same personal details while recovery is in progress; it will not restore purchases, subscriptions, or profile data from the original account.

You forgot the sign-in ID

Check the email accounts you control for previous PlayStation messages, then use the account-help route if you still cannot identify the address. If no linked inbox is accessible, support must verify ownership before changing account details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You received an unexpected change notification

An unrecognized sign-in ID, online ID, or password change can indicate that someone else accessed the account. Start the account-recovery process immediately. If you can still sign in, change the password, review Security, confirm the sign-in email, enable 2SV or a passkey, and remove passkeys you do not recognize. Do not follow a suspicious message’s QR code or sign-in link; open Account Management directly and use only trusted QR codes.

You suspect someone knows your credentials

  • Change the PSN password to a unique one.
  • Change the password of the email account linked to PSN if it may also be exposed.
  • Enable 2SV or a passkey and save fresh backup codes.
  • Sign back in on devices you trust and remove access from devices you no longer control.
  • Never share account details, passwords, passkeys, or verification codes with anyone claiming to provide support through an unsolicited message.

Troubleshooting common sign-in problems after a change

Every device asks you to sign in

This is expected after changing the sign-in email. Use the new email address and current password on each console and app. If a device still shows the old address, sign out completely and restart the sign-in flow.

The verification code is rejected

  • Enter the newest code; a code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt.
  • Check that the phone number or authenticator app belongs to the PSN account you are accessing.
  • Correct the device’s time if authenticator codes are consistently invalid.
  • Use a saved backup code if the normal method is unavailable.

The passkey prompt does not appear

Confirm that passkey sign-in is enabled under Security and that the device meets the stated support baseline of iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later. If the passkey was removed or the device was replaced, use another registered passkey or the password-based recovery option.

You cannot complete any security change

Sign in again through Account Management, try a current browser, and complete any additional verification prompt. If the account email, password, or 2SV method is no longer available, stop repeated attempts and use PlayStation’s identity-verification support process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A maintenance checklist for your PSN account

  • Confirm that the sign-in email is current and accessible.
  • Use a unique password containing uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Enable 2SV with SMS or an authenticator app, or use a passkey on a supported device.
  • Store backup codes somewhere safe and separate from your phone.
  • Review and remove passkeys belonging to devices you no longer own.
  • Check unexpected security emails promptly and start recovery for changes you did not authorize.
  • Scan only trusted QR codes and never share account details.

Key points to remember

Account Management → Security is the central control panel for the PSN sign-in email, password, 2SV, and passkey. A sign-in email change signs out every device and alerts the old address. A forgotten password is reset through a secure email link, while lost email, phone, authenticator, or backup-code access requires PlayStation’s recovery and identity-verification process.
