While signed in, open your Google Account’s Security settings, select Password under “How you sign in to Google,” then enter a new password and choose Change password. If you can’t sign in because you’ve forgotten the password, use Google Account recovery instead.
Change a known password while signed in
Google may ask you to sign in again before it lets you change the password. The labels can vary slightly by device or language; these are Google’s documented routes.
On a computer
- Open Google Account Help’s computer instructions and follow the link to your Google Account.
- Select Security.
- Under “How you sign in to Google,” select Password and sign in again if prompted.
- Enter your new password, then select Change password.
On Android
- Open your device’s Settings.
- Tap Google, then Manage your Google Account.
- Tap Security & sign-in, then Password.
- Enter your new password and tap Change Password.
Google notes that the first character entered on mobile is not case-sensitive. See Gmail Help’s Android instructions if you need the documented steps.
If you forgot your password or can’t sign in
Use Google Account recovery, not the signed-in password-change flow. Answer the questions as accurately as you can to help Google confirm that the account is yours. If Google verifies the account, follow its prompts to reset the password and choose one you have not previously used for that account.

Google says it does not work with services that claim to provide account or password support. Do not share your password or verification codes with anyone claiming they can recover the account for you.
What happens after you change the password?
Google says changing the password signs you out in most places, but there are exceptions: devices you use to verify your identity, some third-party apps already granted access to your account, and helpful home devices with account access. A password change does not necessarily revoke every app or device session.

Use a unique password

Add a second sign-in step
Two-step verification adds a check beyond your password. Google describes security keys as its most secure second verification step. Passkeys are another option: they use a fingerprint, face scan, or device screen lock instead of a password. These are optional account protections, not requirements for changing your password.
Keep recovery details up to date
A recovery phone number and email address can help you regain access and receive security alerts. See Google’s guidance on setting up recovery options.
