To change where downloads go, open the settings for the browser you use and change its download location. Chrome and Edge offer a per-download prompt as well as a default folder; Firefox and Safari provide their own download controls. These settings are separate for each browser, and changing them affects future downloads—not files already saved.
Change the download folder in Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Downloads.
- Beside the download location, select Change, then choose the folder you want.
- To choose a destination for each file instead, turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading.
Chrome’s usual default folders are Users<username>Downloads on Windows 10 and later, /Users/<username>/Downloads on Mac, and /home/<username>/Downloads on Linux. These are defaults, not requirements. Google’s Chrome download instructions cover changing the location and managing completed downloads.
Change the download folder in Microsoft Edge
- Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Downloads.
- Under Location, select Change and choose a folder.
- In the same area, enable the option to ask where to save each file if you want to pick a destination each time.
In a work or school environment, an administrator may set a download directory that overrides your preference. Microsoft’s DownloadDirectory policy reference applies to Edge on Windows and macOS, not Android or iOS.
Change the download folder in Firefox
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.
- Select General.
- Under Files and Applications, find Downloads.
- Beside Save files to, select Browse or Choose, then select the destination folder.

Change Safari’s download location on Mac
- In Safari, choose Safari > Settings.
- Select General.
- Use File download location to choose a folder, or configure Safari to ask where to save downloads.

Choose Safari’s download destination on iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap Apps > Safari > Downloads.
- Choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or Other.
iCloud Drive uses its Downloads folder in iCloud Drive; On My iPhone uses the device’s local Downloads folder. Choose Other to select another location. See Apple’s Safari settings guide for iPhone.

What about Chrome on Android?
Do not assume that Chrome’s desktop steps apply to Android. Google’s Chrome Android download help explains how to find and manage downloads in Chrome and the Files app, including sharing, renaming, and deleting. It does not document a control for changing the destination folder.

What changes—and what does not
- The setting belongs to one browser. Changing Chrome’s folder does not automatically change Edge, Firefox, or Safari; set each browser separately.
- A default folder and a per-download choice are different. The default applies to future downloads unless you choose to be asked where to save a file.
- Existing files stay where they are. Changing the setting does not move completed downloads. Move them separately in File Explorer, Finder, or your device’s file-management app.
- Menu names can vary. Browser and operating-system updates may shift labels or settings. If a path differs, open the browser’s settings and look for Downloads.
