Use the game’s main-menu settings to change these options: open Settings, look in Interface or Language for subtitle and text controls, then open Audio (or the game’s language controls) for voice options. The exact labels and whether voice and subtitle choices can be mixed independently depend on your platform and the current update.

Activision documents the path to the main-menu settings and the Audio section, but it does not publish one identical voice-language walkthrough for every PlayStation, Xbox, PC or Nintendo Switch 2 build. Use the steps below as a map, then follow the labels shown by your installation.

Quick answer: the menu path

  1. Return to the game’s main menu. Pause menus inside a mission may not expose every language control.
  2. Open Settings. Activision’s support guidance specifically starts with “Open the main menu and navigate to Settings.”
  3. Open Interface or Language. Turn subtitles on or off and select the available text or subtitle language.
  4. Return to Settings and open Audio. Look for a voice, spoken-language or audio-language selector and choose an available voice track.
  5. Apply the change if the build presents an Apply or Confirm command. If the game asks to restart or install language content, complete that process before testing.
  6. Launch a campaign scene, briefing or other spoken sequence to verify voices, and check a scene with captions to verify subtitles separately.

If the language you want is not listed, do not assume that the game has no support. Region, platform, edition and installed language content can change the choices shown. Check your platform’s store page and the game’s installed-language options first.

What you can change—and what the language list means

Modern Warfare 4 has two related but distinct localization decisions: the language of written interface and subtitles, and the language of spoken dialogue. A language can appear in menus and subtitles without having a recorded voice track. Selecting a text language therefore does not prove that a matching voice option exists.

Activision divides the supported languages into full and partial localization. Full localization includes voiceover, text and subtitles. Partial localization includes text and subtitles only. Activision also cautions that “Language availability may be limited based on your region and preferred platform.” Steam’s 2026 support table records 14 supported languages and separates interface, full-audio and subtitle support; it likewise shows no full-audio support for Arabic, Polish, Russian or Traditional Chinese.

“Listed” describes the localization information published by Activision and the Steam support table, not a promise that every platform exposes the same selector. A platform can show fewer choices because of its sales region, edition, account language or installed files.

Step-by-step: change subtitles and written text

1. Start from the main menu

Leave any active match or campaign mission and return to the front menu. Settings opened from a pause screen can contain only gameplay controls, while the main-menu settings are where language-related options are expected to appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Open Settings

Select Settings. The menu may use a gear icon or a text label, but the important distinction is that this is the top-level settings screen, not a platform-level console menu.

3. Find Interface or Language

Open the section named Interface, Language, or a closely related text-and-display category. Look for a subtitle toggle and a subtitle or text-language selector. Because labels change between updates, use the descriptive wording shown in your build rather than searching for one exact phrase from another platform.

4. Turn subtitles on or off

Set the subtitle control to the desired state. If the game offers separate options for cinematic dialogue, gameplay dialogue or speaker identification, change only the controls you need; do not assume that one toggle governs every caption type. If no separate controls are shown, the build is treating subtitles as one setting.

5. Choose the written language

Select the desired language from the available list. This normally affects menu text and subtitles together, although the interface can expose them separately. A language that is available for written text may still be absent from the voice list because it is a partial localization.

6. Save and verify

Use the on-screen confirmation command if one appears. Then open a menu with visible labels and play a section containing dialogue. Check both the captions and the menu text; changing one does not necessarily change the other on every platform.

Step-by-step: change spoken voice language

1. Open Audio from Settings

From the main menu, open Settings, then select Audio. Activision’s support guide explicitly identifies Audio as the place to select audio controls. Some builds put a spoken-language selector directly in Audio; others group it under a broader language page.

2. Identify the voice or spoken-language control

Look for a control described as voice language, spoken language, dialogue language or audio language. Do not confuse it with voice-chat input, microphone language, commentary volume or a text-language setting. The control you need changes the recorded dialogue track.

3. Select a full-localization language

Choose one of the languages listed with full localization if you want dubbed dialogue. Activision’s full list is English (US), Deutsch, Español (AL), Español (EU), Français, Italiano, Português (BR), 한국어, 日本語 and 简体中文. Arabic, Polish, Russian and Traditional Chinese are listed for text and subtitles but not for full voiceover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Allow any required content change

If the game or platform offers an optional language download, install the requested content and wait for it to finish. If no download prompt appears, the track may already be installed or may be managed by the platform’s language settings. Do not interrupt an installation that is still writing game content.

5. Restart only when requested

Some builds apply audio changes immediately; others require a return to the main menu or a restart. Follow the instruction displayed by your copy. If the selector changes back after relaunching, repeat the selection from the main menu and check whether the platform has reverted the game’s language preference.

6. Test a spoken scene

Use a campaign cinematic, briefing or another sequence with clear dialogue. Music, ambient chatter and multiplayer voice chat are not reliable tests of the installed dialogue track. Keep subtitles enabled during the test if you want to confirm whether voice and caption languages are independent.

Can you use English voices with Spanish subtitles?

Possibly, but it is not guaranteed on every platform. The localization tables establish which voice and subtitle languages exist; they do not promise that every combination can be selected independently. A build may provide two selectors, one for spoken audio and one for text/subtitles, in which case an English voice track and Spanish subtitles can be selected if both choices are present. Another build may tie the choices together or expose only the platform’s preferred language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To test the combination, first set the written language in Interface or Language, then set the voice language in Audio. Play a scene with subtitles enabled. If changing one selector automatically changes the other, your build does not offer independent control through its current interface. Do not infer that a missing combination is a missing voice track; it may be a platform or edition restriction.

Platform differences to account for

The same title can expose different language choices on different storefronts. Use the platform comparison below as a diagnostic framework, not as a promise of identical menu wording.

Platform or PC version Where to begin What can affect the list
PlayStation 5 Game main menu > Settings; inspect Interface or Language, then Audio. Purchase region, console language, edition and installed game content.
Xbox Series X|S Game main menu > Settings; inspect Interface or Language, then Audio. Store region, account or console language and available installed content.
PC via Steam Check the in-game Settings first, then the Steam game properties and language options if the desired content is absent. Steam’s regional listing and language support table, selected install language and downloaded files.
PC via Battle.net Check the in-game Settings first, then the launcher’s installation or game-language controls if offered. Battle.net region, edition and installed language data.
Xbox PC Check the in-game Settings first, then the Xbox app’s game-language or installation options if offered. Microsoft Store region, account settings and installed content.
Nintendo Switch 2 Open the game’s main-menu Settings and inspect the available Interface, Language and Audio sections. Console region, software edition and the language choices provided for that release.

These platform labels are intentionally broad because Activision has not published one platform-by-platform sequence for every current build. If a menu name differs, follow the function of the setting rather than a remembered button order.

Why a language may be missing

The language has text support but no listed voice track

Arabic, Polish, Russian and Traditional Chinese are the four partial-localization languages identified by Activision. They are listed for text and subtitles, not full voiceover. You can therefore see one of these languages in the subtitle list while it is absent from Audio.

Your region or platform limits availability

Activision states that availability may be limited by region and preferred platform. A language shown in a global list can be omitted from a regional store listing or a particular console edition. Check the store page for your exact platform and purchase region rather than relying on a list from another edition.

The language files are not installed

Some platforms separate optional language content from the base installation. Open the platform’s game-management, properties or installation-language screen and look for available language data. If your platform offers a language pack, install it, allow the download to finish and then reopen the game.

The game or launcher has not refreshed its settings

An update, migration between regions or an interrupted content download can leave the menu showing an old set of choices. Close the game completely, confirm that the update and any language-content download are complete, and open the main menu again. Avoid changing several platform-language settings at once; make one change, relaunch and check the result.

You are looking in the wrong settings area

Subtitle controls are generally under Interface or Language, while audio controls are under Audio or a language page. Searching only the Audio tab will not necessarily reveal subtitle options, and searching only Interface will not prove that a voice track exists.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely explanation What to do
Subtitles changed, but spoken dialogue did not Text and voice are separate controls, or the selected language has no full audio. Check Audio for a voice-language selector and choose a full-localization language.
A language appears in subtitles but not Audio It is a partial localization, or the platform does not provide that voice track. Use it for text/subtitles, or choose one of the ten full-localization languages for voices.
The desired language is missing everywhere Region, platform, edition or installed content is limiting the list. Check the exact platform store page, game-language options and any optional language download.
The setting reverts after restarting The change was not confirmed, the required content is incomplete or the platform preference overrides it. Apply the setting from the main menu, finish content installation and check the platform language preference.
Menus changed but a cinematic still uses another language The voice track remained unchanged, or the cinematic is using content that was not updated. Recheck Audio, restart if requested and test another spoken scene.
Subtitles are enabled but nothing appears The scene may not contain captioned dialogue, or a separate subtitle type is disabled. Test a campaign dialogue scene and inspect all subtitle-related controls in Interface or Language.
A downloaded language is not selectable The platform may require the game to be closed, or the download may not have completed. Wait for the installation to finish, fully close and relaunch the game, then inspect Audio again.

How to choose the right setup

You want dubbed dialogue

Start with the ten full-localization languages. If one is absent, verify your region and platform before changing console or launcher language settings. A text-only language cannot supply a recorded voice track merely because it appears in the subtitle list.

You want to learn or read another language

Use a full-localization language for voices and select the text language separately if your build exposes independent controls. Keep subtitles on while testing so you can identify whether the written language changed without altering dialogue.

You need accessibility captions

Open Interface or Language first and enable subtitles there. Then inspect the available subtitle-related controls rather than assuming the Audio page contains them. Test a dialogue-heavy scene, because a quiet gameplay segment may not display captions even when the setting is correct.

You share a console or PC

Check whether the game stores the preference per user profile, platform account or installation. If another player’s language keeps returning, compare the active profile and platform region before reinstalling. The exact persistence behavior is platform-dependent and is not guaranteed to be identical across editions.

Important limits on what the official lists prove

The published localization lists confirm the supported language categories, but they do not document every menu label, every platform’s download behavior or every possible voice/subtitle pairing. They also do not establish that a language available on Steam will appear on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC or Nintendo Switch 2. Treat the list as a guide to potential support, then verify the choices displayed by your own edition.

Likewise, the presence of a subtitle language does not establish that all menus, every cinematic and every multiplayer element are translated in exactly the same way. The practical test is the combination of the written-language setting, the Audio setting and a spoken scene in your installation.

Final verification procedure

  1. From the main menu, open Settings.
  2. In Interface or Language, set subtitles and written text.
  3. In Audio, select a voice language that is listed for full localization.
  4. Install any language content offered by the platform and follow any restart instruction.
  5. Play a dialogue scene with subtitles enabled, then confirm the voice and caption languages independently.
  6. If a choice is missing, compare your region and platform’s language support with the store listing and inspect installed language options before concluding that the game does not support it.

The reliable rule is simple: use Interface or Language for captions and text, Audio for spoken dialogue, and the platform’s own listing and installed-content screen to explain differences between editions. Because exact labels and independent voice/subtitle selection vary, the controls visible in your current build are the final authority.
