Skyrim can track one mission or quest at a time; its active target appears on the compass and maps. For built-in HUD adjustments, go to System > Settings > Display to change HUD opacity or toggle the crosshair and subtitles. The exact controls vary by platform and can be remapped.
Track a different quest
- Open the Journal or quest log. On the default PC keyboard scheme documented in Skyrim’s PC manual, press J. On Xbox 360, open the Start menu and choose the Journal, as described in the Xbox 360 manual.
- Select the quest you want to follow. Bethesda Support’s instructions are to select the mission or quest in the log, expand its objectives, then select the objective you want to track. Bethesda says only one mission or quest can be tracked at a time.
- Activate it. On the manual’s default PC controls, select the quest and press Enter; on Xbox 360, press A. The manuals say activating a quest adds its target or targets to the compass and world and local maps.
If the target does not appear, return to the Journal and check that the intended quest or objective is selected and active. A quest marker is not a setting that makes every quest appear at once; the tracking guidance describes one active mission or quest at a time.
Adjust Skyrim’s built-in HUD settings
- Open the System menu.
- Choose Settings, then Display.
- Adjust HUD Opacity to make the interface more or less transparent. The PC and Xbox 360 manuals both document this option alongside brightness.
- Use the available toggles to turn the crosshair, dialogue subtitles or general subtitles on or off.
The documented Display options establish opacity and those individual visibility toggles. They do not establish a general switch that hides the entire HUD, so do not expect that option in this menu based on the manuals.

These are platform-specific examples from manuals for the original/Legendary Edition era, not universal bindings for every Skyrim release, current console, or remapped control scheme. Use your platform’s in-game controls if the listed input does not match.

Reset changed PC controls
If PC keyboard bindings were reassigned, Bethesda’s documented reset procedure is to press Esc, choose System, open Controls, then press T to reset to default. This support procedure is specifically for PC; it should not be applied as a console instruction.
