If you mean the videos playing inside a continuous YouTube live stream, change the source playlist in the cloud host or encoder that sends the video to YouTube—not in YouTube Studio. The exact controls, and whether an edit interrupts playback, depend on your provider. If you mean a playlist of saved videos on your YouTube channel, edit that separately in YouTube.
First, identify which playlist you mean
- The live stream’s source playlist: the ordered videos or media queue a cloud service plays into the outgoing live feed. This is the playlist to change if you want different content to appear in an always-on broadcast.
- A YouTube playlist page: a saved collection of videos on your channel. Changing its order or contents does not, by itself, change the media being sent in an already-running live stream.
YouTube’s API distinguishes the incoming video feed from the broadcast viewers watch: “A stream identifies the audio-video content that is being communicated to YouTube,” while “A broadcast represents an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens.” See the YouTube Live Streaming API reference.
Change the source playlist in your cloud host
For a continuous live feed, the source playlist is normally managed by the service or encoder assembling and transmitting that feed. YouTube’s documented broadcast and stream resources do not provide a general playlist editor for an unspecified third-party host. The procedure below is therefore provider-neutral; do not assume a particular button name or that edits can be made without interruption.
- Locate the service that is sending the feed. Sign in to the cloud streaming provider or encoder account used to create the always-on stream. Find the active channel, session, or output connected to your YouTube broadcast.
- Open the media queue attached to that output. Look for the provider’s playlist, schedule, or queue controls. Confirm you are editing the active output, rather than a draft playlist or a different channel.
- Make the intended change. Reorder items, add or remove a video, or replace the source playlist only if the service supports editing the active queue. Check the provider’s own guidance for whether changes take effect immediately, at the next item, or after a restart.
- Check the provider’s output status. Confirm its player or encoder is still transmitting and that the intended item is playing. If the provider reports a stopped or failed output, use that service’s documented recovery controls.
- Check YouTube’s incoming stream health. In YouTube’s live controls, inspect the stream status and health information for an active feed or configuration warning. The LiveStreams API documentation describes stream status and health fields; check these alongside the provider’s output status.
Will changing the playlist stop the live stream?
There is no universal answer. A host may allow an in-place queue edit, apply it only after the current video, or require a restart. The available YouTube documentation does not establish how an unspecified provider handles playlist edits. Before changing a live queue, check that provider’s instructions and, if continuity matters, its rollback or recovery procedure.

Do not confuse changing media order with changing delivery configuration. YouTube documents restrictions on updating some stream properties; for certain changes, a new stream with the correct settings is needed. That restriction concerns documented stream properties, not ordinary playlist ordering. See YouTube’s LiveStreams update documentation.
If the feed or broadcast changes state
YouTube broadcast lifecycle controls are separate from the source playlist. The API documents transitions between broadcast states and transient states while a transition completes; it also advises checking that the bound stream is active before transitioning. If the playlist change appears to stop the broadcast, first verify the provider is sending video and the bound YouTube stream is active. Then follow the host’s recovery procedure and check YouTube’s status before attempting a broadcast transition. See the LiveBroadcasts API documentation.

What to verify when choosing or troubleshooting a host
If you are selecting a host—or the controls are unclear—ask the provider these specific questions before changing a live playlist:

- Does a reorder, insertion, or replacement take effect immediately, at the next item, or only after restarting?
- Will the edit interrupt the outgoing feed or change the YouTube broadcast state?
- Where can you see encoder and output health, and what recovery or rollback controls are available?
- How does the service connect to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint, and which active session is bound to the broadcast?
Google Cloud documents a managed Live Stream API for transcoding live, linear video, with channel and pipeline operations. That documentation does not establish that Google Cloud—or another particular provider—is your current host or that it offers the playlist control you need.
