If you only want another language or layout, change Samsung Keyboard’s settings instead; those settings do not change the phone’s system language.
Choose a different keyboard app

Install the keyboard app you want from the Play Store or Galaxy Store.

Open Settings, then tap General management.

Tap Keyboard list and default.

Tap Default keyboard, then choose the installed keyboard you want to use.
These are the steps in Samsung Canada’s instructions, updated March 28, 2026. Menu labels and screens can differ by country, model, carrier, and software version. If you cannot find the setting, search Settings for Keyboard list and default. Samsung’s US support guidance also notes that screens vary by carrier, software version, and model.

Change Samsung Keyboard’s language or layout
If you want to keep using Samsung Keyboard but change its input language, layout, theme, or size, open Settings and search for Samsung Keyboard, then adjust the available options. You can also open Samsung Keyboard settings from the keyboard toolbar. Samsung’s customization instructions apply specifically to Samsung Keyboard: Samsung states, “The steps ONLY apply to the default Samsung Keyboard.”
Add another input language
On supported versions, the route is Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Manage input languages > Languages and types. Samsung Australia documents this path in its guide updated August 20, 2026. Adding a language here changes Samsung Keyboard’s available input languages; it does not change the language used throughout the phone.

Change the phone’s system language
To change the language of the phone interface, open Settings > General management > Language. Add the language you want, then choose whether to keep the current language or make the new one the default. This system setting is separate from the keyboard app and the languages available for typing. See Samsung’s language-setting instructions.
If you chose Gboard
Install Gboard, then configure its settings to select the languages and layouts you want. Google’s Gboard setup instructions cover that configuration. On a Galaxy phone, use Default keyboard in Samsung’s Keyboard list and default settings to choose Gboard as the active keyboard.

What to consider when choosing a keyboard
Check that the keyboard is available to install on your device, supports the languages and layouts you need, and has the settings you want to use. The official setup guidance cited here does not establish that one keyboard is better than another for privacy, speed, or overall quality, so those should not be assumed from setup instructions alone.
