Choose the primary font, then adjust Size, Line height, or Column width. Use Fallback for characters your main typeface does not contain.
Change the font in the IntelliJ IDEA terminal
- Open the terminal with View | Tool Windows | Terminal, or press Alt+F12.
- Open Settings with Ctrl+Alt+S.
- Select Tools | Terminal.
- Under Font Settings, choose a typeface from Font.
- Set Size to make terminal text larger or smaller.
- Optionally adjust Fallback, Line height, and Column width.
- Click Apply and return to the terminal session.
Font controls the terminal’s primary typeface. Fallback supplies glyphs when that typeface lacks a character, such as a symbol or a non-Latin script. Line height changes vertical spacing, while Column width controls the character-cell width used by the terminal layout.
Choose the setting that matches what you want to change
IntelliJ IDEA has separate controls for the embedded terminal, console output, and the overall interface. Changing one does not necessarily change the others.
| Goal | Settings path | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Change only the embedded terminal’s typeface and spacing | Tools | Terminal | Font Settings | Terminal text |
| Change console text and output | Editor | Color Scheme | Console Font | Console rendering; JetBrains also notes that the embedded terminal inherits console font and color settings |
| Change text throughout the IDE | Appearance & Behavior | Appearance | Use custom font | Tool windows, toolbars, menus, and other interface text |
Increase terminal text size without changing the IDE
Use Tools | Terminal | Font Settings | Size. This changes the terminal’s text size while leaving editor text and the rest of the interface unchanged. If the characters look crowded after enlarging them, increase Line height as well.

Change the font for IntelliJ tool windows
For terminal, Project, Git, and other tool-window labels and interface text, open Settings | Appearance & Behavior | Appearance and enable Use custom font. Pick the interface font and size there. This is broader than the terminal-specific control and also affects toolbars and menus.
Why changing the editor font did not change the terminal
The editor’s code font is not the terminal’s direct font setting. Configure the terminal under Tools | Terminal. For console output, use Editor | Color Scheme | Console Font; those console settings can also affect how the embedded terminal is rendered.

Install a font that does not appear in the list
- Install the typeface in your operating system. IntelliJ IDEA can use fonts available to the operating system or Java runtime.
- Restart IntelliJ IDEA if the newly installed font is not immediately listed.
- Return to Settings | Tools | Terminal | Font Settings and select it from Font or Fallback.
If the font still does not appear, verify that the installation completed for the user account running IntelliJ IDEA and that the font is supported by the Java runtime used by the IDE.

Terminal features depend on IntelliJ IDEA’s bundled Terminal plugin, which is enabled by default. Check Settings | Plugins | Installed, find Terminal, and enable it if terminal functionality has been disabled. Restart the IDE if it asks you to do so, then open the tool window again with View | Tool Windows | Terminal or Alt+F12.
