Switch the tool off and disconnect its power source before changing an abrasive.
Find your Ryobi model and manual first
Look for the model number on the tool’s label, then enter it on RYOBI Support to find manuals, parts, and repair information. Use that manual to confirm the abrasive size and type, attachment method, orientation, guard requirements, and tightening procedure before removing anything.
Separate the two jobs below: changing sanding paper on a sander is not the same as changing a wheel on an angle grinder. If by “grinding disc” you mean a different accessory, identify its tool and accessory type before proceeding.
Change sandpaper on a Ryobi sander
Check the sander’s pad shape and dimensions, and match the replacement’s attachment method. If the pad has holes, match the hole pattern too. Paper that looks close in size may not fit or attach correctly.

Adhesive-backed paper
- Switch off the sander and disconnect its battery or unplug it.
- Peel the old paper from the pad. Remove loose residue without damaging the pad.
- Compare the new paper with the tool manual and pad. For example, RYOBI lists its A21D901 detail-sander paper as 2-7/8 inches with adhesive backing; it fits only when that size and attachment match your tool (RYOBI A21D901 listing).
- Remove the adhesive liner, align the paper as the manual specifies, and press it onto the pad so it lies flat.
Hook-and-loop paper
- Switch off the sander and disconnect its battery or unplug it.
- Pull the old sheet from the pad.
- Align the replacement with the pad and any dust-collection holes, then press it into place.
RYOBI’s A21C901 Corner Cat paper is listed as a 5-1/2-inch sheet with hook-and-loop backing. That example is not a universal fit; check your tool’s pad and manual (RYOBI A21C901 listing).
Change a disc on a Ryobi angle grinder
Angle grinders can use a pin-spanner locking nut or a tool-free FIXTEC system. Identify yours before attempting removal; the release method differs. RYOBI’s pin-spanner guide says to switch off and disconnect the battery or cord before changing a disc, and directs owners of FIXTEC models to separate instructions (RYOBI pin-spanner guide).

- Switch off the grinder, remove its battery or unplug it, and wait for the wheel to stop completely.
- Check the model manual to confirm the permitted wheel size and type, guard configuration, and removal method for your grinder’s locking system.
- Remove the locking nut or tool-free lock only as the manual directs. Do not hold or stop a moving wheel by hand.
- Fit the approved wheel in the specified orientation. Reinstall the specified flange and locking hardware, then tighten as directed. Do not force a mismatched wheel, flange, or nut.
- Check that the wheel, flange, nut, and required guard are seated as the manual shows before reconnecting power.
Model-specific example: PCL445
The PCL445 manual describes removing the battery, using the spindle lock and supplied wrench, and retaining the disc flange as specified. It also gives model-specific wheel orientation and warns against overtightening. Those details apply to the PCL445 procedure, not automatically to other Ryobi grinders (PCL445 operator manual).
Check the fit before using the tool
- For sandpaper, verify pad size and shape, attachment method, and hole alignment if applicable.
- For a grinder, verify wheel size and type, flange and locking hardware, orientation, and guard against the exact manual.
- Stop if a part does not seat as directed. Do not remove a required guard or improvise with a different wheel or fitting.
Model differences matter: RYOBI describes the PBLAG01B as a 4-1/2-inch grinder with tool-free wheel removal, for example, but that does not establish compatibility or a procedure for another model (RYOBI PBLAG01B product page).

If you cannot identify the fitting
Do not guess at wheel dimensions, nut orientation, tightening force, or guard setup. Find the manual through RYOBI Support; if the model or fitting remains unclear, contact RYOBI support or an authorized service center.
