Open PowerToys Settings and use the search box to find an option. To start PowerToys when you sign in, go to General and turn on Run at startup. To change a utility’s hotkey, open that utility’s settings; to remap keys or shortcuts across Windows or in one app, use Keyboard Manager.

Find a PowerToys setting

  1. Open PowerToys Settings.
  2. Type a keyword into the search box at the top. Results filter as you type.
  3. Select a result to jump to that setting. Press Enter or select Show all results to view matching results.

PowerToys’ settings pages and available utilities can change over time, so check the labels and shortcut defaults in your installed version. See Microsoft’s General settings documentation.

Make PowerToys start when you sign in

  1. In PowerToys Settings, open General.
  2. Find Run at startup and turn it on or off.

When enabled, PowerToys starts automatically when you log in to Windows, as Microsoft Learn explains in its General settings guide. Turning it off prevents that automatic launch; it does not prevent you from opening PowerToys manually.

Change a utility’s activation shortcut

An activation shortcut opens a particular utility. It is configured on that utility’s own settings page, not through one universal PowerToys hotkey.

Remap a key or keyboard shortcut

Use Keyboard Manager when you want a key or key combination to behave differently, rather than merely changing the hotkey that opens a PowerToys utility.

  1. Open Keyboard Manager in PowerToys Settings.
  2. Choose the key- or shortcut-remapping control that matches what you want to change.
  3. Set the original input and the key, shortcut, or text sequence it should produce.
  4. Choose whether the remap should apply globally or only in a specified target application, then save it.

If you do not enter a target application, the remap applies globally across Windows. Entering an application limits it to that app. Check the scope before saving to avoid changing keyboard behavior more widely than intended. Keyboard Manager supports key-to-key mappings, shortcut remappings, and mappings to text sequences; see Microsoft’s Keyboard Manager guide.

Resolve shortcut conflicts

If PowerToys displays a shortcut-conflict notice, review the listed bindings. The General settings conflict dialog lets you reassign a shortcut, ignore the conflict, or remove the conflicting binding. A shortcut used by more than one PowerToys module may not produce the behavior you expect, so adjust the binding associated with the utility you want to use. See General settings.

Troubleshoot a shortcut that does not work

  • Check that the utility is enabled and running. PowerToys Run and Command Palette both require this; changing a hotkey alone does not start a disabled utility.
  • Check fullscreen settings. PowerToys Run can be set to ignore its shortcut in fullscreen mode, and Command Palette has fullscreen-related options. Review the relevant utility settings if the hotkey fails only in a fullscreen app.
  • Check for a conflict. Review the conflict notice in General settings and reassign, ignore, or remove the binding as appropriate.
  • Consider whether the target app is elevated. Windows treats elevated applications differently. For some interactions, PowerToys may also need administrator privileges. If prompted, use General > Restart as administrator, or enable Always run as administrator if the relevant workflow requires it. Do not elevate PowerToys by default; consult Microsoft’s administrator-mode guidance and the utility’s own settings.

Back up settings before broad changes

General settings provide a location to save PowerToys settings and a way to restore an existing backup. Use those controls before making broad configuration changes if you want a recovery point. The options are described in Microsoft’s General settings documentation.
