Use Netflix’s account controls in a web browser to set the highest maturity level a profile can watch, block individual titles, and protect the profile with a four-digit PIN. TV and streaming-device menus do not support maturity-rating edits, so make the change on the Account page and refresh the device afterward.
What a Netflix maturity rating controls
A maturity rating is a viewing ceiling for one Netflix profile. After you choose a level, that profile can see shows, movies, and games rated at or below the selected level. The setting applies to the profile, not automatically to every profile on the account.
Think of the rating as a broad filter rather than a list of individual programs. It is useful when you want a consistent age-appropriate boundary without searching for every title. If one particular show or movie needs to be excluded even though it falls within the selected range, add a title restriction as well.
Netflix describes the behavior this way: “When you set a maturity rating for a profile, that profile will only see shows, movies, and games with a rating at or below that level.” The profile’s available catalog and recommendations follow that ceiling after the setting has refreshed on the device.

Choose the right place to make the change
The web Account page is the dependable route for changing maturity ratings and managing title restrictions. Netflix says those rating changes cannot be made on a television or streaming device. A TV app may let you use the profile, but it does not provide the controls needed to edit the profile’s rating.
On Android, iPhone, or iPad, the Netflix app exposes viewing restrictions for ordinary profiles. Netflix adds an important exception: editing the maturity rating for a Kids profile requires a web browser. If an option is missing in the app, open Netflix in a browser instead of trying to find a hidden setting on the TV.
What you need before editing
- Access to the Netflix account that owns the profile.
- Access to the email address or phone number that can receive Netflix’s verification code, or the Netflix account password.
- The name of the profile you want to change.
- A decision about whether you need a broad maturity ceiling, a block for a particular title, a Profile Lock PIN, or a combination of these controls.
Change a profile’s maturity rating in a web browser
Use these steps when you want to change the broad viewing limit. The labels below are the labels Netflix uses in its account controls.

- Sign in to Netflix in a web browser.
- Open the Account page.
- Under Profiles, select Adjust parental controls.
- Choose the profile whose rating you want to edit.
- Complete the identity check. Netflix may send an emailed or text-message code, or ask for the Netflix account password.
- Find Maturity Rating and select the desired level.
- Choose Save.
The selected level becomes the ceiling for that profile. A profile set to a lower level will not show titles above that level, while raising the level allows titles up to the new ceiling. Because the control belongs to the selected profile, repeat the process for each profile that needs a different limit.
If Netflix asks for verification again
Verification is part of the parental-control change, not an error. Use the code Netflix sends to the account’s email address or phone number, or enter the account password when that option is offered. Once identity is confirmed, return to the Maturity Rating control, choose the level, and save it.

Change viewing restrictions in the Netflix mobile app
The mobile route is available on Android, iPhone, and iPad for profiles that expose viewing-restriction controls. It is useful when you are away from a computer, but use a browser for a Kids profile’s maturity-rating edit.
- Open the Netflix app and go to My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to manage.
- Open Viewing Restrictions.
- Tap Maturity Rating.
- Complete Netflix’s identity verification and set the desired level.
If the profile is a Kids profile and the rating control is unavailable, stop using the app for this task. Sign in through a web browser and follow the Account-page procedure instead.

A maturity ceiling is broad. A title restriction is precise: it removes a named show or movie from the selected profile even when the title would otherwise be allowed by that profile’s rating.
Block a title in a browser
- Sign in to Netflix and open the Account page.
- Go to Profiles, then choose Adjust parental controls.
- Select the profile to which the restriction should apply.
- Complete the requested identity verification.
- Open Title Restrictions.
- Search for the show or movie.
- Select the title and save the restriction.
The blocked title is removed from that profile. A block is profile-specific, so another profile can still have access unless you add a separate restriction there.
Block a title in the mobile app
- Open My Netflix and tap the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles, then select the profile.
- Open Viewing Restrictions.
- Choose Block Titles.
- Search for the show or movie, select it, and save.
Netflix shows only the first 100 blocked titles in the list. That display limit does not prevent additional blocks. If a title is not visible in the list because more than 100 titles are already blocked, search for that title directly when you need to remove its restriction.

When to use a title block instead of a lower rating
- Use a maturity rating when the goal is a simple, broad ceiling for the profile.
- Use a title block when one known show or movie is unsuitable but other titles at the same rating should remain available.
- Use both when you want an age-based ceiling plus exceptions for particular titles.
Lock the profile so it cannot be opened casually
Viewing restrictions work only when the viewer stays in the restricted profile. Netflix’s Profile Lock adds a separate access control: a four-digit PIN is required to open the profile or play downloads from it. This helps prevent someone from switching to another profile to avoid the restrictions, or from opening the restricted profile without permission.

- Under Profiles, select the profile you want to protect.
- Choose Profile Lock.
- Complete Netflix’s identity verification.
- Create a four-digit PIN and save it.
Keep the PIN private. The lock protects entry to that profile; it does not replace the maturity rating or title blocks. Those controls determine what the profile can see after it has been opened.
How the three controls differ
Choose the control that matches the problem you are trying to solve. The following comparison separates the scope of each setting and the way it helps prevent bypassing.

A practical setup can combine all three: set the profile’s maturity ceiling, block any individual exceptions, and add a Profile Lock PIN so the viewer cannot simply leave the profile or open it without authorization.
Why a change may not appear immediately
Netflix says a device may need to refresh before it reflects a changed rating or restriction. If the old catalog or recommendations still appear, switch to another profile and then back to the edited profile. If that does not refresh the device, sign out of Netflix and sign in again.

- Switch away from the edited profile.
- Return to the edited profile and check whether the available titles now match the new setting.
- If the old setting remains, sign out of Netflix on that device.
- Sign in again and open the profile.
Make the change first on the Account page, then refresh the device. Editing repeatedly on a TV will not work because Netflix does not provide maturity-rating changes on TVs or streaming devices.

The maturity-rating option is missing on a TV
This is expected. Netflix states that maturity-rating changes cannot be made on a TV or streaming device. Use a web browser, open the Account page, and edit the profile under Profiles and Adjust parental controls.
The app does not show the option for a Kids profile
Netflix requires a web browser for changing a Kids profile’s maturity rating. Open Netflix in a browser and use the Account-page controls rather than the mobile app.
The profile still shows titles above the new ceiling
Refresh the device by switching to another profile and back. If the change is still not visible, sign out and sign in again. Confirm that you edited the intended profile, because maturity ratings are attached to individual profiles.

Netflix displays only the first 100 blocked titles in the list. Search for the title directly to find and remove its restriction; the display limit does not prevent you from adding more blocked titles.

Someone keeps using another profile
A maturity rating and title block govern only the profile where they were configured. Add a Profile Lock PIN to the restricted profile to require a four-digit PIN before it can be opened or its downloads played. If other profiles also need restrictions, configure those profiles separately.
You cannot complete the identity check
Netflix requires verification before parental-control changes. Use the emailed or text-message code when prompted, or authenticate with the Netflix account password. Without that verification, the rating or restriction will not be saved.
A reliable setup sequence for families
When setting up a profile from scratch, work from the broadest control to the most specific and finish with access protection.
- Open Netflix’s Account page in a browser and identify the profile that will be used.
- Set its Maturity Rating ceiling and save it after verification.
- Review the catalog boundary you want and add any individual shows or movies under Title Restrictions.
- Create a four-digit Profile Lock PIN if the profile must not be opened or bypassed casually.
- On each TV, streaming device, phone, or tablet, switch away from the profile and back. Sign out and in again if the new controls do not appear.
- Repeat the configuration for any other profile that needs its own ceiling, title blocks, or lock.
This order keeps the controls easy to reason about: the maturity rating sets the default boundary, title blocks handle exceptions, and the PIN protects access to the profile itself.
What viewers will experience after the controls are saved
The restricted profile can browse and play content at or below its selected maturity level, subject to any title blocks you added. A blocked show or movie is removed from that profile even if its maturity rating falls within the allowed range. Opening the profile or playing downloads from it requires the four-digit PIN when Profile Lock is enabled.
These settings are independent by profile. Changing one profile does not automatically change another, and protecting one profile does not prevent someone from using an unprotected profile. Configure each profile according to the access and viewing rules you intend to enforce.
