For a Steam game, start with the game’s Properties > Language page, then open the title’s own Options or Settings menu if Steam has no effect. Language, subtitles, and voice audio may be independent controls, so English interface text does not automatically mean English voices. Controller behavior is configured separately under Controls, Controller, or Button Mapping; duplicate assignments and partial PC support are common reasons a mapping will not save.
Identify which setting you actually want
“Change the language” can mean three different things. A game may expose them separately, or combine them into one preset:

If your goal is English menus with Chinese voices, you need an interface-language selector and a voice selector. If the title offers only one language control, that combination may not be possible without an official language pack or a different edition.
Check Steam’s per-game language setting first
Steam’s setting applies to an individual game, not necessarily to every game in your library. Steam Support says that, when a game supports the selected language, files for that language may need to download before you can play. A game can therefore appear unchanged until the download completes.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open the Language tab.
- Select English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or another listed language.
- Close the Properties window and wait for Steam to schedule or complete any language-file download.
- Launch the game again. If it was running while you changed the setting, exit it completely first.
The list in this tab is the authoritative first check for a Steam edition. Steam also warns that some languages may not be available for a particular game, so an absent language cannot be enabled through a hidden Steam option.
Do not confuse Steam’s interface language with the game’s language
To change the Steam client itself, use Steam > Settings (or Preferences on some desktop versions) > Interface. That changes Steam’s menus and client text. Third-party games can keep their own language setting, so changing the client does not guarantee a change inside the game.
Use the game’s menu when Steam has no effect
Some games ignore the Steam selection after installation, expose more channels than Steam does, or require a change at the title screen. Look for Options, Settings, Language, Audio, Accessibility, and Controls.
- Return to the title screen if the game does not expose its full settings during play.
- Open Options or Settings.
- Choose Language for menu and interface text. If the game asks for a restart, accept it; many titles load text resources only when starting.
- Open Audio or Accessibility and look for separate Subtitles, Captions, Messages, or Voice controls.
- Apply or confirm the change, then return to the game and test a menu, a dialogue line and an instructional prompt.
Capcom documents this pattern in its Steam support material: the language setting is reached through Options > Language at the title screen. In Dragon’s Dogma 2, the documented in-play route is Pause > System > Options > Language. The exact labels differ by title, but the distinction between a title-screen menu and an in-game system menu is important.

Set English text while keeping Chinese voices
This mixed setup works only if the game stores text and voice as separate resources. Use the following order so you can tell which channel changed:
- Set the game’s interface or text language to English.
- Set Subtitles or Messages to On, then choose English if a subtitle-language field exists.
- Open Voice or Audio Language and select Chinese (or the specific Chinese voice option offered).
- Save the settings and trigger a voiced conversation. Check the menu text, subtitle text and spoken language separately.
The Van Helsing PC manual is a useful example of why this can work: it lists separate controls for VOICE, MESSAGES (subtitles), and INTERFACE, including a subtitle on/off option. A title that exposes only one “Language” field may apply the same language to every channel instead.
Verify which Chinese language variants are included
“Chinese” is not one guaranteed package. A game may list Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese separately, and the availability can differ between versions, platforms and regions. Check the Steam language table, the publisher’s FAQ or the current manual before promising yourself a particular combination.

- If English is missing from Steam: the edition may not ship with English files.
- If Chinese appears twice: select the script your reader needs; Traditional and Simplified text are different resources.
- If a voice option is missing: the title may provide Chinese text but not Chinese audio, or may lock voices to a specific edition.
- If a patch changed the list: recheck the game’s current Steam table or publisher documentation after updating.
Change controller buttons on PC
Controller settings are normally independent of language. Connect the controller before launching the game when possible, then open Controls, Controller, or Button Mapping.
- Open the control menu from the title screen or pause menu.
- Choose the controller or gamepad tab rather than the keyboard-and-mouse tab.
- Select an action, press the desired button or axis, and use Apply, Save, or Confirm.
- Repeat for each action you need to change.
- Leave the menu, perform the mapped action in a safe area, then return and verify that the assignment persisted after a restart.
Some manuals mark particular options as gamepad-only, while publisher support pages may describe PC controller support as partial. Partial support can mean that navigation, vibration, prompts or certain actions do not behave like they do on a console even when basic movement works.
Fix a mapping that will not save
Capcom warns that duplicate controls can prevent a new mapping from being saved. If the game rejects an assignment, use this sequence:
- Note the action you are trying to assign and the action that already uses that button.
- Assign the existing action to an unused button, or choose a Clear or Unbind command if the menu provides one.
- Assign the desired button to the original action.
- Save the complete layout, not just the individual row.
- Restart the game and test both actions.
If the menu automatically swaps assignments, accept the swap only after checking what will happen to the displaced action. A control can appear to save while another action silently inherits the old button.

When the controller is not detected
- Check the game’s support statement. A title may support only certain controller protocols or only a subset of functions on PC.
- Test the controller outside the game. Confirm that the operating system sees button presses and stick movement before troubleshooting in-game bindings.
- Connect before launch. Some games detect devices only during startup; reconnecting after the title is open may require a restart.
- Look for a controller toggle. Menus may include separate keyboard, mouse and gamepad tabs, or a setting that enables controller input.
- Check prompt changes. If actions work but the screen shows keyboard keys, the game may be receiving the controller while retaining keyboard prompts; this is a presentation issue, not necessarily a failed connection.
- Remove conflicts. Another device, virtual input layer or duplicate binding can capture the same button. Disconnect unused controllers and clear conflicting assignments.
Do not assume that a USB controller will provide full support simply because it connects. Compare the controller protocol and support level stated by the game or publisher with the functions you need, such as analog triggers, vibration, gyro input or menu navigation.

The game is still in Chinese after changing Steam
- Confirm that the selected language is listed for that game in Steam.
- Wait for any language-file download to finish.
- Exit and relaunch the game.
- Open the title’s own Options or Settings menu and select the language there.
- If no English option appears in either place, treat English as unsupported for that edition rather than searching for an undocumented switch.
Menus are English but dialogue is not
Open Audio and inspect the voice-language control. If no voice selector exists, the game may bind voice audio to the interface language or ship only one recorded language. Check the edition’s documentation before changing other settings.
Subtitles do not match the interface
Look for Subtitles, Captions or Messages under Audio or Accessibility. Turn subtitles on, then choose their language if a second selector is available. A separate subtitle control is required for English text with Chinese voice when the interface language is not enough.

Find the action already using that button, clear or move it, then assign the button again and save the full layout. Duplicate controls are a documented reason for failed saves.

Only some controller functions work
Check whether the title describes PC support as partial or labels certain controls as gamepad-only. Missing vibration, incorrect prompts or unavailable menu actions can be limitations of the game’s implementation rather than a defective controller.
Use this verification checklist after every change
- Steam’s per-game language field shows the intended language.
- Any language download has completed.
- The game was restarted if it requested a restart or loaded resources only at launch.
- Interface text, subtitles and voice audio were tested as separate channels.
- Simplified versus Traditional Chinese was selected intentionally where both are listed.
- The controller is detected before entering the control menu.
- Every changed action has a unique assignment, with no unwanted duplicate.
- The layout still works after closing and reopening the game.
What the documented examples tell you
The official examples illustrate three different implementation patterns:

Fastest reliable workflow
For most Chinese PC games, the least disruptive order is: verify the game’s language list in Steam, select the desired per-game language and allow files to download, then inspect the title-screen options for independent interface, subtitle and voice controls. Configure the controller only after the text and audio choices are stable; this keeps language changes from being mistaken for input problems. If a language or controller feature is absent from the game’s documented options, regard that as an edition limitation and choose a supported configuration rather than forcing an unverified workaround.
