Windows 11 puts keyboard controls in several different locations. Keyboard layouts are managed under Time & language, accessibility features are under Accessibility, and repeat delay and repeat rate are still hidden in the classic Keyboard Properties dialog.

Use the section that matches what you want to change: the characters produced by each key, the Windows interface language, key repetition, keyboard accessibility, typing suggestions, or the touch-keyboard icon.

Change the keyboard layout in Windows 11

A keyboard layout determines what characters Windows enters when you press keys. For example, you can add US International, UK, Dvorak, or another language-specific layout without changing the language used by Windows menus.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Time & language > Language & region.
  3. Under Language, select the three-dot menu beside the relevant language.
  4. Choose Language options.
  5. Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
  6. Select the layout you want to install.

You do not always need to install a complete language pack to add a keyboard layout. If the layout is not listed beneath your current display language, open Language options for another installed language. Windows may associate the layout with a different language than you expect.

Switch between keyboard layouts

After installing at least two layouts, switch between them using either of these methods:

  • Select the input-language icon in the taskbar notification area, then choose a layout.
  • Press Windows + Spacebar repeatedly to cycle through installed layouts.

If Windows + Spacebar does nothing, Windows probably has only one keyboard layout installed. The shortcut cycles through layouts; it does not install a new one.

Remove an unwanted keyboard layout

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  2. Select the three-dot menu beside the language that contains the layout.
  3. Select Language options.
  4. Under Keyboards, select the three-dot menu next to the unwanted layout.
  5. Select Remove.

If the layout is not where you expect it, check the keyboard lists for your other installed languages. Windows can place a layout under the current display language or under the language associated with that layout.

If Remove is unavailable, that layout is probably the only keyboard installed for that Windows language. Add another keyboard first, then return to the list and remove the unwanted one.

Change the Windows display language

Changing the display language is different from changing the keyboard layout. The display language controls text in Windows features such as Settings and File Explorer. A keyboard layout only changes how key presses produce characters.

Install another display language

  1. Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  2. Beside Preferred languages, select Add a language.
  3. Search for and select the language, then choose Next.
  4. Under Install language features, select the features you need.
  5. Select Install.

Set the new language as the display language

  1. Return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  2. Use the Windows display language drop-down menu to select the installed language.
  3. Sign out when Windows prompts you.
  4. Sign back in to apply the change.

Changing the display language can also affect the keyboard layout shown at the Windows sign-in screen. Before entering a password, check the input-language icon so you know which layout is active.

Windows 11 Home Single Language restriction

The Windows 11 Home Single Language edition supports only one Windows display language. You may see messages such as Only one language pack allowed or Your Windows license supports only one display language.

This restriction applies to the Windows interface language. It does not necessarily prevent you from adding alternative keyboard layouts.

Restore the missing input-language icon

The input-language icon normally appears in the taskbar when multiple keyboard layouts are installed. It may be hidden when Windows is configured to use the older desktop language bar.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Go to Time & language > Typing.
  3. Select Advanced keyboard settings.
  4. Under Switching input methods, clear Use the desktop language bar when it’s available.

This restores the taskbar input-language icon but disables the legacy desktop language bar.

Change keyboard repeat delay and repeat rate

Repeat settings affect what happens when you hold down a key. Repeat delay controls how long Windows waits before repeating the character. Repeat rate controls how quickly the character repeats afterward.

Windows 11 does not expose these traditional controls on the main Settings keyboard page. Open the classic Keyboard Properties dialog instead:

Common Windows 11 keyboard-setting misconceptions

Outdated or misleading instruction What to use instead
Settings > Devices > Typing Use Settings > Time & language > Typing.
Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard Use Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
Repeat delay and repeat rate are on the Accessibility keyboard page. Press Windows + R, run control keyboard, and open the Speed tab.
Changing a keyboard layout changes Windows menu language. A layout changes typed characters; the display-language setting changes Windows interface text.
Every alternate layout requires a complete language pack. Try adding the layout under Language options for an installed language first.
A missing language icon means no second layout is installed. Also check whether the desktop language bar is hiding the taskbar icon.

FAQ

How do I quickly change the keyboard language in Windows 11?

Install the required layouts under Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Language options. Then press Windows + Spacebar to cycle through them, or select the input-language icon in the taskbar.

Why does Windows 11 keep switching keyboard layouts?

More than one layout is probably installed, and a shortcut or taskbar selection is switching between them. Check every language under Language & region, remove layouts you do not use, and verify the active layout before typing.

How do I make a keyboard repeat faster in Windows 11?

Press Windows + R, run control keyboard, open the Speed tab, increase Repeat rate, and select Apply.

How do I turn off Filter Keys?

Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, select Filter keys, and turn the feature off. Filter Keys can cause short or repeated keystrokes to be ignored.

Can Windows 11 Home Single Language use another keyboard layout?

Usually, yes. The Single Language restriction limits the Windows display language, not necessarily the keyboard layouts you can add and use.
