For routine use, turn on automatic date and time and automatic time-zone selection where your device offers them. Daylight saving time (DST) changes are handled through the device’s time-zone rules; if the displayed time is wrong, check the selected zone, location access, internet connection, updates, and device restrictions before setting the clock manually.

iPhone: turn on automatic time and time zone

  1. Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. Turn on Set Automatically. The iPhone uses the time zone to set its date and time.
  3. If it selects the wrong zone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and check Setting Time Zone.

Make sure the iPhone has internet access and current software. If a message says updated time-zone information is available, restart the device. If automatic time is unavailable or remains incorrect, Apple documents manual date, time, and time-zone settings. Screen Time or a corporate profile may prevent changing the automatic control, and available options can vary by carrier, country, and region. See Apple’s time and time-zone troubleshooting instructions.

Android: enable automatic date, time, and time zone

  1. Open the Clock app.
  2. Tap More > Settings > Change date and time.
  3. Turn on Automatic date and time and, if available, Automatic time zone.

Some Android devices use location to determine the time zone. If you need a specific zone, turn off the automatic time-zone control if your device provides it, then select the zone manually. Menu names and support vary by manufacturer and device; if the Clock-app route differs, search Settings for “date and time.” Some devices, including some Wi-Fi-only tablets, support only location-based time-zone setting. See Google’s Android date, time, and time-zone instructions.

Windows 10 and 11: set time and daylight-saving behavior

  1. Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically.
  3. For automatic time-zone selection, turn on Set time zone automatically. Microsoft says this also sets daylight saving time automatically.

If automatic time-zone selection is off, Windows shows a separate Adjust for daylight saving time automatically control that you can enable or disable. You can also set the time and time zone manually on the Date & time page. The exact controls may vary by Windows version and administrator restrictions. See Microsoft’s Windows time and time-zone instructions.

Mac: use automatic date, time, and time-zone settings

  1. Open Date & Time settings.
  2. Enable automatic date and time and automatic time-zone selection.
  3. If the Mac does not identify the right zone, check Location Services and its System Services options for time zone and system customization.

Keep the Mac online and restart it if the clock does not update. If automatic mode continues to show the wrong result, Apple documents manual date, time, and time-zone settings. The available options can depend on macOS version, location, and device-management settings. See Apple’s time and time-zone troubleshooting instructions.

Why didn’t my clock change for daylight saving time?

First work out whether the clock itself is wrong or the device is using the wrong time zone. Then check the relevant automatic controls and investigate these common causes:

  • Wrong time zone: Check the selected zone. If automatic detection is supported, verify that it is enabled.
  • Location detection is unavailable: Check location permissions and time-zone-related system services on Apple devices, or location-based time-zone settings on supported Android devices.
  • No connection or outdated software: Connect the device to the internet and install available system updates so it can receive current time-zone information.
  • A device restriction blocks changes: Screen Time, a carrier, or a managed work profile may restrict settings. On an iPhone, a corporate profile or Screen Time can make Set Automatically unavailable.

After checking these items, restart the device if its time still has not refreshed. Use manual date, time, or time-zone settings only as a fallback or when you need a specific zone.

When a jurisdiction changes its time-zone rules

Time-zone rules are set by jurisdictions and can change. Microsoft notes that a legal change may arrive too late for Microsoft to engineer, test, and publish a Windows Update in time. For that Windows-specific circumstance, Microsoft recommends using the existing time zone until an update is available. This is Microsoft’s guidance for Windows, not a universal instruction for every platform or country. See Microsoft’s Windows daylight-saving support guidance.
