In the Audible iOS or Android app, open a playing title, tap More (the three-dot menu) at the top of the player, then choose Player settings. You can also go to Profile → Settings (gear) → Player. Use the player’s Speed control for the current title, or set a default speed for new listens in Player settings.
Open Audible’s Player settings
Audible’s general Player settings are available in its iOS and Android apps, not the Cloud Player. The menu includes playback and display options such as skip duration, progress display, mini-player time display, timer behavior, screen auto-lock, Automatic Car Mode, listening-position sync, and continuous listening. If your app looks different, look for the equivalent Player menu; exact labels and availability can vary by app version or marketplace. See Audible Help: Player settings.

- Start a title and open its player.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu) at the top of the player.
- Tap Player settings.
Alternatively, open Profile → Settings (gear) → Player.
Change narration speed
Adjust speed for the current title
In the app, play the title, open the player, tap Speed at the bottom, and select a rate. Audible says this per-title choice is saved for that title across apps. The Cloud Player also has a Speed control at the bottom of its player; play a title, tap the control, and choose a rate. Audible’s speed instructions cover both controls.

Set a default for new listens
In the app, go to Profile → Settings (gear) → Player → Narration Speed → Default, then choose a speed. Audible identifies 1.0x as the starting default; defaults can differ by device. The default is distinct from a speed selected for a particular title.
Set or replace a sleep timer
While a title is playing in the app, tap Timer, then choose a preset or create and save a custom duration. Playback stops when the timer expires. To replace a timer that is counting down, open Timer again and choose another time. The timer is an app feature. Audible Help’s timer instructions describe the available behavior.

Turn shake-to-extend on or off
Audible says you can extend an expired timer for the same amount by shaking your phone within 30 seconds after the audio starts to fade. To enable or disable that behavior, open Profile → Settings (gear) → Player → Timer → Shake to extend.
Choose what plays after a title
Open Profile → Settings (gear) → Player, scroll to Continuous listening, and choose what should happen when playback ends. Audible distinguishes queued titles from recommended previews: queued titles take priority, and previews play only when nothing else is queued. Audible Help: continuous listening explains these options.

Play queued titles automatically
Turn on Up next titles to let queued titles play automatically. To add one, open Library, tap the title’s More menu, and choose Play next. You can also press and hold a title and choose Play Next.
Hear recommended previews
Turn on Recommended titles under Continuous listening to hear related-title previews when the current listen ends. If a title is already queued, it plays first instead.

Control listening-position sync
Audible says the app automatically syncs listening position across devices. To control the setting, open Profile → Settings (gear) → Player and toggle Sync listening position. If syncing is not behaving as expected, Audible’s app guide suggests toggling the setting off and back on. See Audible Help: Listen in the app (August 27, 2026).

Which setting should you change?
- Playback is too fast or slow: Change Speed in the player for the current title, or update Narration Speed → Default for new listens.
- Playback stops or continues unexpectedly: Check the timer and Continuous listening options.
- Your place differs across devices: Check Sync listening position.
