To create a custom YouTube stream key, open YouTube Studio > Create > Go Live, select the Stream tab, then choose Select stream key > Create new stream key. Set the options you need and click Create. Select the new key and paste it into your encoder’s Stream Key field. A custom key is useful when you want to reuse a key; it is not required for ordinary streaming.
What changes when you use a custom stream key?
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube describes a custom stream key as a way to reuse the same key. Creating one does not, by itself, change your encoder or improve the stream. The key and the stream URL are separate values: put the key in the encoder’s Stream Key field and the server address in its stream URL or server field.
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. Create a custom key if you need to reuse a key, or if you specifically need manual control of resolution. Manual resolution selection is an option within custom-key settings, not a requirement for using a custom key. Create a custom key in YouTube Studio

Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Create > Go Live to enter Live Control Room.

Select the Stream tab.

Open Select stream key and choose Create new stream key.

Enter the settings for the new key. If you need to choose a resolution yourself, turn on Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. Otherwise, leave automatic detection enabled.

Click Create. Then select the new key from the stream key list.

Copy the key into the encoder’s Stream Key field and save the encoder settings. Keep it private: anyone with access to the key may be able to send a stream to your channel.

Choose the correct stream URL and protocol
The stream key is not the same as the server or stream URL. Copy each value into its matching encoder field. If you are using RTMPS, copy the RTMPS stream URL separately from Live Control Room. YouTube notes that the interface may initially show the ordinary RTMP URL; select the lock icon to reveal RTMPS details. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. The protocol choice is separate from creating a custom key and does not change those steps. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions if you need to find the secure URL.

If the custom key does not work

The encoder will not start or YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that you copied the selected key without extra spaces and placed it in the Stream Key field, not the server URL field. If the encoder still fails to start, YouTube recommends obtaining a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder with it. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

You reset or replaced the key: The encoder must use the corresponding new key. Update its saved Stream Key value before trying again; an old key will no longer be the one you selected.

You suspect the key was exposed: Reset it in the Stream key section of Live Control Room, then replace the saved value in every encoder that uses it. YouTube says only channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission.

You cannot find manual resolution controls: Create a custom key and enable Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. If you do not need to choose resolution manually, YouTube’s recommended automatic detection remains the simpler choice.
