If you want the shortest useful preparation for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, recap Dragon Age: Inquisition and its final major story expansion, Trespasser. If you have time to play just one earlier game, choose Inquisition: its story introduces Solas, whose role carries directly into The Veilguard. You do not need to finish every Dragon Age game first; BioWare describes each entry as a standalone story with a new hero.

What you need to know before The Veilguard

Dragon Age games share the world of Thedas, recurring characters, factions, conflicts, and consequences, but each centers on a different protagonist. BioWare executive producer Gary McKay described the series this way: “As fans of our franchise know, every Dragon Age game has delivered a new standalone story.” He also said of The Veilguard: “Naturally, the Dread Wolf still has an important part in this tale, but you and your companions – not your enemies – are the heart of this new experience.”

That makes the Inquisition-to-Solas thread the most efficient lead-in. Earlier games add valuable context about the Grey Wardens, Kirkwall, and the mage–templar conflict, but they are not a prerequisite for following a new story with a new hero.

Choose a catch-up route

Route What to do What you gain
Fast Recap Inquisition’s Breach and Corypheus story, including its ending; then recap Trespasser. The essential Solas and Veil context, with the least time commitment. These recaps reveal major turns in both stories.
One game Play Inquisition, then play or recap Trespasser if it is accessible on your platform. A fuller introduction to the Inquisitor, the Breach, Corypheus, and Solas.
Full main-game arc Play Origins → Dragon Age II → Inquisition → Trespasser. Legacy, a Dragon Age II story DLC, is optional but connects Hawke to Corypheus. The broadest game-only view of Thedas, its conflicts, and the chain of events leading to the Solas story.

If you choose a recap, expect spoilers for the events it covers. A spoiler-light orientation can stop after learning who the protagonists are and what conflicts each game introduces; understanding why Solas matters, however, requires revealing the later Inquisition story.

The story so far, in release order

Dragon Age: Origins — the Blight and the Grey Wardens

In Origins, a Grey Warden recruits allies in Ferelden during the Fifth Blight, a Darkspawn invasion led by an Archdemon. The Warden’s effort ends the immediate Blight threat. The game’s choices can change personal and political outcomes, so there is no single resolution that applies to every player. Awakening and other Origins DLC add Warden stories, but are optional for understanding the main sequence.

Dragon Age II — Hawke, Kirkwall, and a growing conflict

Dragon Age II follows Hawke and family as they flee the Blight and settle in Kirkwall. Across several years, Hawke becomes entangled in the city’s political and social tensions, especially the conflict between mages and templars. In the Legacy DLC, Hawke encounters Corypheus, who later becomes the central antagonist of Inquisition.

Dragon Age: Inquisition — the Breach and Solas

A disaster at the Conclave opens the Breach, a tear in the Veil—the boundary between the mortal world and the Fade, a realm of spirits. Demons spill through, and the Inquisitor’s mark can close smaller tears. The Inquisition forms to confront Corypheus, who seeks to become a god. Solas joins the Inquisitor as a companion; the ending reveals that his identity and motives are far more significant than they first appear.

Trespasser — the bridge to The Veilguard

Set after the main Inquisition campaign, Trespasser follows an Exalted Council considering the Inquisition’s future. Its revelations identify Solas with Fen’Harel, the Dread Wolf, and establish his plan involving the Veil. This is the clearest story bridge into The Veilguard: BioWare creative director John Epler said, “When we stabbed that map at the end of Trespasser, we knew we were going to Tevinter. And we knew we were going to see Solas.”

How the timeline fits together

GamesRadar+ places the main sequence in this broad in-world chronology. These are story dates, not release years; the exact year of The Veilguard is not included because the cited timeline accounts differ on it.

Story In-world date
Dragon Age: Origins 9:30 Dragon
Dragon Age II Begins in 9:30; continues through 9:37 Dragon
Dragon Age: Inquisition 9:41 Dragon
Trespasser 9:44 Dragon

What you can safely skip

  • Earlier games: Skip them if your priority is understanding the Solas setup. BioWare’s standalone framing means they are not required for basic comprehension of a new protagonist’s story.
  • Origins expansions: These provide extra Warden material, not a necessary link in the central progression to Dragon Age II.
  • Books, comics, and animation: They can deepen the setting, but are optional enrichment rather than prerequisites for the game narrative.
  • One fixed Origins ending: Do not treat any one outcome as universal. Player choices produce different personal and political states.

How much does your previous save matter?

The earlier games are built around consequential choices, but those choices do not make the entire series mandatory homework. The available BioWare statements establish that The Veilguard has a new protagonist and a standalone story, while the Dread Wolf remains important. They do not establish that every past choice must be imported or remembered to follow the new plot.

If you want the broader continuity, play the games in release order and keep in mind that your own outcomes may differ from a recap written around one path. For the direct lead-in, concentrate on the Inquisitor, the Breach, Corypheus, Solas’s reveal, and the conclusion of Trespasser.
