To catch every Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum, you must snag them from opposing trainers. There are no ordinary wild-Pokémon encounters for completing this roster. Rui identifies Shadow targets during battle; you then weaken each one without knocking it out, control Hyper Mode and Shadow Rush recoil, and throw Snag Balls until the capture succeeds. The documented completion target is 48 Shadow Pokémon. Keep a checklist beside you, mark each successful snag immediately, and save after difficult encounters.

What “every Shadow Pokémon” means in Colosseum

Shadow Pokémon are obtained only from specific trainer battles. They appear as altered opponents rather than as wild Pokémon in grass, caves, or fishing spots. A trainer’s Shadow Pokémon can usually be captured when that battle occurs, but the encounter may require careful battle management because the target can use Shadow Rush, enter Hyper Mode, or be knocked out accidentally.

The documented roster contains 48 Shadow Pokémon. Treat that number as a checklist of unique targets, not simply as the number of battles you will fight: some encounters are tied to story progression, one early target depends on your starter choice, and several missed targets can be recovered from later trainer rematches.

Use a printed or digital roster from a current StrategyWiki or GameFAQs table, then record the moment each Pokémon is successfully snagged. The reference tables identify the full 48-entry roster and the areas in which the targets appear; this guide supplies the capture method, route logic, recovery rules, and purification steps needed to finish the set.

Prepare before attempting difficult snags

Carry a working save plan

Save before a battle that contains a rare, high-level, or one-chance target. Save again immediately after a successful snag, especially before moving into another area with difficult encounters. A successful capture is not secure if you continue through a long sequence and later reset from an older save.

Build a control-focused party

Bring Pokémon that can lower a target’s HP in small increments and that can apply reliable control effects. The walkthrough material specifically highlights Confuse Ray as valuable because confusion can create safer turns while you reduce HP. Avoid opening with attacks that may score a critical hit or deal enough damage to knock out the Shadow target.

Plan for the partner Pokémon

Most Shadow targets arrive with a partner Pokémon on the opposing side. If that partner can threaten your team or force area-of-effect damage, defeat or control it first. Removing the partner gives you more turns to work on the Shadow target and reduces the chance that an unintended attack, recoil effect, or critical hit ends the encounter.

Do not rely on a universal catch-rate number

Published reference pages expose catch-rate fields, but no complete, directly verified numeric series is available for all 48 targets in the material used for this guide. Higher-level Shadow Pokémon are described as noticeably harder to catch, so use the practical rule: lower HP safely, control the field, and be prepared to throw multiple Snag Balls rather than planning around an unverified percentage.

How to snag a Shadow Pokémon, step by step

  1. Enter the correct trainer battle. Shadow Pokémon are attached to named trainer encounters. If the battle does not contain the target on your checklist, do not assume it can be found in the surrounding area as a wild Pokémon.
  2. Confirm the target with Rui. Rui identifies Shadow Pokémon during the battle. Use that identification to distinguish the target from ordinary opposing Pokémon before committing to a capture attempt.
  3. Stabilize the field. Defeat or control the partner Pokémon when it could interfere with the capture. Keep your own team healthy enough to survive several turns and avoid attacks that could hit the Shadow target unintentionally.
  4. Reduce HP in controlled steps. Use weaker attacks, defensive turns, and status or control moves when appropriate. The aim is to leave the Shadow Pokémon alive with as little HP as you can safely manage, not to finish the battle quickly.
  5. Watch Shadow Rush recoil. Shadow Rush damages its user through recoil. A target that begins the turn at low HP can knock itself out before you get another chance to throw a Snag Ball, so monitor its remaining HP after every action.
  6. Manage Hyper Mode. When the Shadow Pokémon enters Hyper Mode, calling to it can bring it back under control and also contributes to opening its heart gauge later. Do not allow a chaotic turn to replace a deliberate capture attempt.
  7. Throw a Snag Ball. Select the Snag Ball command whenever the target is in a safe capture window. Continue throwing Snag Balls until the capture succeeds; a failed throw is not a reason to abandon the encounter if the Pokémon remains conscious.
  8. Confirm the snag and save. Once the Pokémon is captured, mark it on your 48-entry checklist and save as soon as the game gives you a safe opportunity. This prevents a later mistake from erasing a difficult success.

Battle management that prevents accidental knockouts

Keep the target alive through recoil

Shadow Rush is the main special danger during a low-HP attempt. Every time the target uses it, check how much HP remains rather than immediately attacking again. If one more Shadow Rush could knock the Pokémon out, prioritize a Snag Ball or a control action instead of additional damage.

Use confusion and other control effects deliberately

Confuse Ray is called out as particularly useful because it can buy turns while you adjust HP. Control effects are not a substitute for watching the HP bar: confusion can still end a turn in an unexpected way, and the target can recover from the effect. Use the move to create a safer window, then take the capture attempt while that window exists.

Control your own damage output

Switch from high-power attacks to low-power moves as the target approaches the capture range. Avoid broad attacks when the partner has already been removed, because there is no benefit in risking a knockout. If your party has a move that can critically hit often or deals variable damage, choose a more predictable option.

Call during Hyper Mode when the turn is safe

Calling to a Shadow Pokémon that enters Hyper Mode can calm it and is one of the actions that helps open its heart gauge. In the capture battle, use the call when you can afford to give up an attack and when Shadow Rush recoil will not finish the target before your next turn.

Route coverage: where the 48 targets are found

The story and post-game location tables need to be used together. The documented route spans the early Phenac and Pyrite encounters, the Shadow Pokémon Lab, The Under, Realgam Tower, Snagem Hideout, and the Deep Colosseum. Post-game rematches matter because a target that was not snagged during its first appearance may remain available later, depending on the trainer and Pokémon.

Area or phase How to use it in your checklist What to watch for
Early Phenac and Pyrite encounters Start your roster and mark every successful snag as soon as the battle ends. Do not assume an early target is permanently lost if you miss it; check the post-game rematch information for that trainer.
Starter-dependent opening route Record which of Bayleef, Quilava, or Croconaw appears on your file, then track the alternative targets separately. Your starter choice changes the first route encounter and affects where the alternatives can be recovered later.
Shadow Pokémon Lab Use the location table to match each trainer battle to your roster entry. Moving trainers may be part of the later recovery path, so do not skip the rematch listings.
The Under Check each Shadow entry against the trainer encounter rather than the area name alone. A target can be overlooked if you focus on progressing through the story instead of checking Rui’s identification.
Realgam Tower Mark the Pokémon immediately after the snag and save before continuing through the tower sequence. Long sequences make an earlier save especially costly if a capture is not recorded.
Snagem Hideout Review both the original encounter and the listed moving-trainer rematch information. Some missed targets return only through a later trainer position or rematch.
Deep Colosseum Reserve a pre-battle save for the Togetic encounter and verify the target before acting. Togetic is identified as the only one-chance Shadow Pokémon in the game.

Starter-dependent targets: Bayleef, Quilava, and Croconaw

The opening route does not present the same Shadow starter evolution on every file. Depending on the starter you selected, the initial route contains Bayleef, Quilava, or Croconaw. The other two are not removed from the overall completion goal; the location tables identify where the alternatives can be recovered later.

Your starter choice Shadow evolution encountered on the initial route Completion action
Starter choice producing Bayleef on the route Bayleef Snag it during the listed trainer battle, then use the post-game location table for the alternatives.
Starter choice producing Quilava on the route Quilava Snag it during the listed trainer battle, then track Bayleef and Croconaw through their later recovery locations.
Starter choice producing Croconaw on the route Croconaw Snag it during the listed trainer battle, then track Bayleef and Quilava through their later recovery locations.

Do not mark the other two as permanently missed merely because they were absent from your first route. Their alternatives are part of the combined story and post-game tables, and the exact recovery point depends on the trainer encounter listed for your file.

What happens if you miss a Shadow Pokémon?

Stationary trainers

Tedmaster’s location FAQ states that Pokémon belonging to trainers who remain in place are still available after the initial opportunity. Return to that trainer, start the battle again if the game permits it, and repeat the normal snag procedure.

Moving-trainer rematches

Some missed targets are tied to trainers who move after the story. The documented rematch locations include Snagem Hideout, the Shadow Pokémon Lab, Realgam Colosseum, and Deep Colosseum. Check the location table for the specific Pokémon before revisiting an area; the recovery location is not identical for every target.

The Togetic exception

Togetic is described as the only Shadow Pokémon for which you have one shot in the entire game after the Deep Colosseum sequence. Save before starting that encounter. Do not flee, and do not knock Togetic out. If the first attempt fails, recovery is not covered by the ordinary stationary-trainer or moving-trainer rematch rule.

How to track all 48 without losing your place

  1. Start with a 48-entry roster. Use the complete StrategyWiki or GameFAQs table as the name source, because the location tables contain the individual entries that are not interchangeable between areas.
  2. Add the first encounter area beside every name. This prevents a later rematch from being mistaken for a new Pokémon.
  3. Mark only completed snags. Seeing a Shadow Pokémon, defeating its partner, or reducing its HP does not count. Mark the entry only after the Snag Ball capture succeeds.
  4. Record a recovery location for anything missed. Write down whether the trainer is stationary or whether the target is listed at Snagem Hideout, the Shadow Pokémon Lab, Realgam Colosseum, or Deep Colosseum.
  5. Separate the starter branch. Highlight Bayleef, Quilava, or Croconaw according to your initial route and leave the alternatives visible until you have captured them.
  6. Verify the total before purification. Count 48 successful entries, not 48 battles. A rematch capture of a Pokémon you already marked does not increase the total.

A simple tracking table needs these columns: Pokémon name, first trainer or area, starter-branch note when applicable, snagged, recovery location if missed, and purified. Keeping “snagged” and “purified” separate matters because catching a Shadow Pokémon does not complete its purification.

Purify every captured Shadow Pokémon

A captured Shadow Pokémon begins with a closed heart gauge. The capture itself is only the first milestone; purification requires you to open that gauge and then complete the process at the Relic Stone in Agate Village.

Open the heart gauge

You can make progress in several ways:

  • Use the Shadow Pokémon in battles.
  • Call to it when it enters Hyper Mode.
  • Leave it in Day Care.
  • Use scents from the Cologne Case.
  • Spend a limited Time Flute when you need the faster, finite option.

Finish at the Relic Stone

When the heart is ready, take the Pokémon to the Relic Stone in Agate Village. The Relic Stone completes purification; simply having the Pokémon in your party or having caught it with a Snag Ball is not enough.

Track purification separately from capture so you can tell whether a missing checklist mark means an unclaimed Shadow Pokémon or a captured Pokémon whose heart work is unfinished.

Choosing a guide or checklist

A free digital checklist is sufficient if it contains all 48 names, first-encounter locations, missable-encounter warnings, post-game recovery coverage, and purification instructions. A physical guide is useful when you play offline or want a page beside the GameCube. The Nintendo Power Player’s Guide is the strongest physical aid identified for this purpose because it includes a Snag List and purification material.

Comparison point Free checklist Physical strategy guide
Roster completeness Confirm that all 48 entries are present before relying on it. The Nintendo Power Player’s Guide includes a Snag List.
Missed-encounter warnings Useful only when stationary trainers, moving trainers, and Togetic are clearly separated. Check whether the edition explains the one-chance Togetic encounter and later rematches.
Post-game recovery coverage Should list Snagem Hideout, Shadow Pokémon Lab, Realgam Colosseum, and Deep Colosseum where relevant. Check the edition’s area tables for the same recovery information.
Purification instructions Should explain heart-gauge methods and the Relic Stone. The Nintendo Power guide includes purification material.
Offline usability Print it or keep a downloaded copy beside the console. Works without a second device once you own the guide.

Common failure modes and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
The target was knocked out. Damage was too high, a critical hit occurred, or Shadow Rush recoil finished it. Reload the pre-battle save, remove or control the partner first, switch to lower-damage moves, and throw Snag Balls sooner.
The target keeps entering Hyper Mode. You are spending turns attacking instead of calling when control is needed. Call during a safe turn, then resume controlled HP reduction and capture attempts.
The target defeats itself with Shadow Rush. Its HP was left too low while waiting for another attack. Check HP after every action and use a Snag Ball before recoil can become fatal.
A Pokémon is missing from the checklist. The capture was not recorded, or a duplicate rematch was counted as a new entry. Compare the name and original trainer against the 48-entry roster and mark only confirmed snags.
A missed Pokémon cannot be found where it first appeared. The trainer moved after the story. Check the rematch tables for Snagem Hideout, the Shadow Pokémon Lab, Realgam Colosseum, or Deep Colosseum.
Togetic is gone after the Deep Colosseum sequence. It was fled from or knocked out during the one available encounter. Reload the save made before the encounter; ordinary post-game recovery does not apply to this exception.
The Pokémon is caught but not purified. The heart gauge remains closed. Use battles, calls during Hyper Mode, Day Care, Cologne Case scents, or the limited Time Flute, then visit the Relic Stone in Agate Village.

A reliable completion order

Work through the story encounters in area order, recording every snag before leaving each battle. Keep the starter-dependent alternatives visible on your checklist instead of assuming the first route contains all three. After the story, revisit stationary trainers and then follow the moving-trainer rematch listings through Snagem Hideout, the Shadow Pokémon Lab, Realgam Colosseum, and Deep Colosseum. Make the pre-battle Togetic save before attempting that sequence. Once all 48 names are marked as snagged, finish the heart-gauge work and use the Relic Stone to purify each one.
