If your nails have become brittle or started peeling while you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, protect them from repeated wetting and drying, moisturize your hands and cuticles after washing, and pause damaging manicures while they recover. Significant weight loss during GLP-1 treatment may be associated with slower nail growth and brittle nails, but that does not prove the medication directly caused your nail changes. Persistent, painful, or unusual changes deserve medical assessment.
What GLP-1 treatment may have to do with nail changes
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) lists slower nail growth and brittle nails among changes reported after starting GLP-1 drugs, linking the observation to significant weight loss. Its guidance does not establish that the drug directly causes every case of brittle or peeling nails, or give a nail-specific rate. Peeling can also have causes unrelated to treatment.
For example, MedlinePlus notes that long-term exposure to moisture or nail polish can make nails peel and become brittle. Aging, injury, diseases, and nutrition-related issues can also be associated with nail abnormalities. Nail appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

How to care for fragile nails at home
Moisturize after washing
After each hand wash, apply an ointment-based moisturizer, such as petroleum jelly, to your hands, nails, and cuticles. The AAD recommends this approach to help prevent dryness and brittle nails. Include the cuticles when moisturizing, and reapply when your hands feel dry.
Reduce repeated exposure to water and polish
Because long-term moisture exposure and nail polish may contribute to peeling and brittleness, reduce them if they seem to aggravate your nails. Keep wet work to what is needed, and give polish a break while the nails are fragile.

Pause artificial and gel nail treatments
Artificial nails can leave natural nails thin, brittle, and parched; applying and removing acrylics can weaken them. Gel manicures can also cause brittleness, peeling, and cracking. When to contact a clinician
Contact a medical professional about peeling or painful nails, or if you notice other unusual changes such as distorted nails, horizontal ridges, or pits. Arrange an assessment if changes persist, worsen, or do not improve with basic care. A clinician can consider medication timing, water or cosmetic exposures, nutrition, and other possible causes instead of assuming the GLP-1 is responsible. The AAD also advises speaking with a dermatologist when GLP-1-related skin, hair, or nail symptoms do not improve with its care tips.

Not based on nail appearance alone. Eating less while taking a GLP-1 may make it harder to get nutrients, but the AAD’s discussion of that concern addresses hair growth and does not establish a nail-specific deficiency or supplement regimen. It is not evidence that biotin or another supplement will repair peeling nails. The AAD advises otherwise healthy adults to try to meet nutrient needs through diet; raise nutrition concerns with your prescribing clinician or a dermatologist rather than self-diagnosing a deficiency.
