To capture a precise YouTube frame in Microsoft Edge, focus the video player, pause it, use . or , to move one frame at a time, then press Ctrl+Shift+S to open Edge Screenshot. Select the player area and save the image. An extension is optional; use one only after checking that it supports your installed Edge version and requesting permissions you are comfortable granting.
What you need before capturing
- Microsoft Edge on a desktop or laptop. Menu names and shortcut behavior can vary by Edge release, operating system, device and market.
- A YouTube video that you are allowed to view and capture. A screenshot can still be subject to the video’s copyright, privacy restrictions or the creator’s terms.
- For frame-accurate work, a keyboard is strongly preferable to dragging the timeline.
You do not need an extension for a basic still image. YouTube supplies frame-step shortcuts, and Edge includes Screenshot. Install an extension when you need a YouTube-specific hotkey, notes, timestamp links or a repeatable workflow.
Capture an exact YouTube frame with Edge’s built-in tools
1. Open the video and give the player focus
- Open the video in Edge.
- Click once inside the video picture, not in the comments, page background or address bar. YouTube’s current computer experience requires the player to have focus before its keyboard shortcuts respond.
2. Pause at the right moment
Press k or click the player’s pause control. If playback continues, click the player again and pause. The timeline is useful for getting near the scene; frame stepping is better for selecting the exact image.
3. Move one frame at a time
With playback paused, press . (period) to advance one frame or , (comma) to go back one frame. Hold neither key: each press moves a single frame. If nothing happens, click the player and try again. A keyboard layout that requires a modifier for the period or comma key may also need that modifier.

4. Open Edge Screenshot
Use any of these documented entry points:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Right-click the page and choose Screenshot when the command is present.
- Open Edge’s Settings and search for Screenshot, then launch it from the resulting control.
Edge Screenshot can capture a selected area or a full page. For a video frame, choose the selected-area mode and drag around the player. Moving page content can remain active while the tool is open, so pause the video before selecting the rectangle; otherwise the saved image may contain a different frame than the one you inspected.
5. Save and verify the image
Adjust the selection until it includes the video picture and excludes browser chrome, controls or unrelated page content. Save the result in the format and location offered by your Edge build. Open the saved file at 100% zoom and check for a play icon, subtitle overlap, a mouse pointer or a frame change. If any appears, return to the player, pause again, step one frame and recapture.
When an Edge extension is worth installing
An extension can shorten a repeated workflow, but it does not automatically improve frame quality. Evaluate one on four practical criteria:
- Frame selection: Does it capture the video element itself or merely the visible browser area?
- Workflow: Does it offer a useful hotkey, direct download, notes or a timestamped return link?
- Compatibility: Does the listing say it supports your current Edge version?
- Permissions: Does the requested access match what the extension needs? Avoid granting broad access you do not understand.
Install and manage an extension safely in Edge
Install from Edge Add-ons
- Open the Edge Add-ons store and search for the extension by its exact name.
- Open the listing and read its description, update date, permissions and compatibility notice.
- Select Get, review the permission prompt, and confirm only if the access is appropriate for your use.
- Open Extensions from the Edge toolbar or Settings and make sure the new extension is enabled.
Use a Chrome Web Store extension when necessary
Edge can run many extensions designed for Chrome. In Edge, open the Extensions management page and enable Allow extensions from other stores before visiting the Chrome Web Store. Read the same permission prompt and compatibility information; Chrome compatibility is not a guarantee that a particular release will work in Edge.

Disable, update or remove it
Open Edge’s Extensions page, locate the extension and turn its switch off to disable it temporarily. Use the available update control or check the store listing for a newer release. Remove an extension from its details menu when you no longer need it. Microsoft recommends checking that an extension is enabled, updated and allowed the permissions it requires when troubleshooting.

These descriptions come from the store listings, not from an independent installation test. Do not assume either extension will install or behave the same way on your device. If a listing shows an incompatibility warning, use Edge Screenshot instead or wait for a compatible release.
Make the captured frame cleaner
Hide controls and overlays
Move the pointer outside the player and wait for YouTube’s controls to disappear before opening Screenshot. Turn subtitles off if they obscure the content, unless the captions are part of the frame you need. Close chat, cookie or newsletter overlays before selecting the area.
Choose the right crop
A player-only crop is usually easier to reuse than a full-page capture. Include the entire video rectangle when you need its original aspect ratio. Crop tighter only when removing black bars or surrounding controls does not cut off important content.

Preserve detail
Maximize the player before pausing if you need a larger source image. Do not enlarge a small screenshot afterward and expect it to recover detail that was not present in the captured pixels. On high-density displays, the saved pixel dimensions may differ from the CSS dimensions you see; check the image properties before using it in print or design work.
Capture several adjacent frames
For motion, blinking text or a fast transition, save a short sequence by stepping forward one frame at a time. Compare the files at full size and keep the sharpest frame rather than relying on a single pause click.
Troubleshooting
The period and comma keys do nothing
- Click inside the video player, then pause and try again.
- Make sure focus has not moved to the address bar, search box, comments or an extension popup.
- Use the player controls to pause first; frame stepping works while paused.
- Check whether your keyboard layout requires a modifier for the punctuation keys.
The screenshot contains the wrong frame
The video may have continued playing while Screenshot was open, or the capture may have been delayed by a page transition. Pause before launching the tool, keep the selection operation short and verify the saved file. For critical work, step one frame backward and recapture as a check.
Edge Screenshot is missing
Try the keyboard shortcut, the page context menu and the Settings search path. If none is available, your Edge channel, administrator policy, operating system or device may not expose the feature. Update Edge through its normal About page if updates are permitted, then test again.

The extension will not install
Read the store’s compatibility notice first. A listing marked incompatible cannot be made reliable by changing a permission. Confirm that Edge is current, that the extension is enabled after installation and that your organization has not blocked add-ons. For a Chrome Web Store extension, verify that Allow extensions from other stores is enabled.
The extension captures a blank or cropped image
Check whether the extension has permission to read the page, whether the video is inside a restricted frame and whether an overlay is covering it. Reproduce the capture with Edge Screenshot. If the built-in tool works, the problem is specific to the extension’s implementation or compatibility; disable or remove it rather than granting additional permissions blindly.
Subtitles, controls or the pointer are burned into the image
Move the pointer away, wait for controls to fade, change the subtitle setting, pause again and recapture. A crop cannot remove pixels that already cover the video, so prevention is cleaner than editing afterward.
Performance, privacy and reliability considerations
- Speed: Built-in Screenshot avoids an extension startup and is normally the quickest path for one image. A dedicated extension can be faster for many repeated captures once its shortcut is familiar.
- Reliability: Edge Screenshot is tied to the browser and does not depend on a third-party listing remaining compatible. Extensions can stop working after an Edge update or disappear from a store.
- Privacy: Review whether an extension can read data on all websites, on YouTube only or during specific actions. Disable or remove it when the task is complete, especially on shared or managed computers.
- Storage: A sequence of full-resolution frames consumes more disk space than a single crop. Name files with the video title, timestamp and frame order so they remain identifiable.
- Accessibility: Keyboard stepping is useful when timeline dragging is imprecise. If a shortcut conflicts with another extension, use the player controls and Edge Screenshot instead.

The displayed player may be smaller than the video’s encoded resolution, the source itself may be compressed, or the screenshot may have been enlarged afterward. Maximize the player before capture and inspect the saved file at its native size.
Is an extension required to save a YouTube screenshot?
