For a dependable weekly record, keep a fixed list of competitor URLs, capture each page with the same browser and viewport settings, and save every run under a dated filename. A self-managed workflow needs both a browser capture script and a scheduler; a hosted service may bundle bulk input and recurring runs. The steps below use Playwright, then show a one-request alternative with ScreenshotNeo.
Plan the pages and captures
Start with the pages that answer a specific monitoring question: a competitor’s pricing page, product landing page, feature page, or another page where visible changes matter. Record exact URLs rather than relying on broad home-page captures.
Keep a CSV or equivalent list with columns such as competitor, page name, URL, capture scope, and notes about the region or page state to monitor. For each URL, choose a viewport screenshot if the visible area is enough, or a full-page screenshot if you need content below the fold. Playwright supports full-page screenshots; see its screenshot documentation.
Make weekly captures comparable
Use the same browser version and execution environment, viewport dimensions, device scale, locale, time zone, and wait behavior for every run. Playwright notes that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Pages can also change for reasons unrelated to a competitor’s design: ads, rotating content, personalization, cookie banners, chat widgets, and other dynamic elements can create visual noise. Where appropriate, mask or filter volatile regions before comparing images. Treat a diff as a prompt for review, not proof of a substantive change.
Build a weekly capture script with Playwright
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. It reads a CSV with a header row containing competitor, page, url, and scope. Set scope to full for a full-page image; other values produce a viewport capture. The script saves a dated PNG for each row and does not overwrite earlier runs.

Schedule it weekly and preserve history
Playwright captures the images; it does not, by itself, run this script every week or maintain your archive. Use the scheduler available in your environment—such as cron, a CI scheduler, or an operating-system task scheduler—and configure it to run the command weekly. Keep the output directory or upload each dated run to storage that retains prior versions. Preserve the capture settings alongside the images so later comparisons use like-for-like conditions.

When a hosted service may fit better
Hosted tools can reduce the work of processing a watch list or setting up recurring captures, but features and terms should be checked against your specific requirements. PeekShot advertises CSV or pasted-URL bulk capture, weekly schedules, retained versions, and exports on its vendor page. - The page times out: Some sites keep network requests open, so
networkidlemay never occur. Try a different wait condition such asdomcontentloaded, or wait for a stable selector that indicates the content you need is present. - The screenshot misses lazy-loaded images: A page may load images only as you scroll. For full-page capture, ensure the content has had time to load; if necessary, scroll through the page before capturing or wait for key image selectors.
- Images differ between weeks without a visible design change: Check whether the browser version, operating system, viewport, device scale, locale, time zone, headless mode, or page content changed. Ads and personalized content can also cause noise.
- A row fails while the rest of the run succeeds: The example logs the URL and continues to the next row. Review the error and URL, then retry the failed page separately; avoid treating a missing screenshot as an unchanged page.
- Names or URLs contain commas: The compact example parser does not handle quoted CSV fields. Use a proper CSV parser or change the input format to a structured format such as JSON.
- New runs overwrite old captures: Keep a timestamp in each output filename and ensure the scheduler writes to persistent storage rather than a temporary directory.
Compare the archive responsibly
Use stable filenames or metadata to match the same competitor page across dates. Compare captures made with the same viewport and scope, and inspect changes in context. A visual comparison can reveal where to look, but dynamic page elements and rendering variation can produce apparent differences that do not represent a meaningful competitor update.
