Use a screenshot tool built into your browser or operating system, save the image to a local folder, and do not attach or paste it into an AI service. In Firefox, right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or use the browser’s DevTools for a full-page or single-element capture.
A local capture avoids sending the screenshot as a new upload to an AI service; it does not remove the page from its normal web context or protect the saved file from later syncing, sharing, or uploading.
Capture a page locally in Firefox
Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool can capture a selected area or a full page and save the result to the browser’s configured download folder, or copy it to the clipboard. The documented shortcut opens the tool: Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows and Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. [Firefox Screenshots]
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or use the keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
- Select the visible area or full-page option as needed.
- Choose Download to save the image locally. Check Firefox’s configured download folder before sharing or opening it in another application.
Capture a full page or one element with Firefox DevTools
For developer-oriented captures, Firefox DevTools provides a full-page screenshot button and an Inspector command for an individual element. [Firefox DevTools screenshot documentation]

Enable the full-page screenshot button
- Open DevTools and select its settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Use the new screenshot button in the DevTools toolbar to save a full-page image.
Capture a single element
- Open the Inspector and locate the element in the HTML pane.
- Right-click the element and choose Screenshot Node.
The Web Console’s :screenshot helper also supports options such as a delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, and clipboard behavior. Consult the Firefox documentation for the current syntax and options before using it in a repeatable workflow.
Keep the capture out of the AI workflow
- Do not use a screenshot button inside an AI app if it attaches the capture to the conversation. OpenAI’s macOS app documentation describes a workflow in which a captured screenshot is attached to the conversation. [OpenAI: Using the ChatGPT macOS app]
- Do not attach the saved file to an AI conversation or paste the image into a service that analyzes it.
- Before saving, confirm the destination. A local file can later be exposed by cloud sync, sharing, or an upload to another app.
- If Firefox offers copy-to-clipboard, remember that another application may access or receive the image when you paste it.
These steps address the transfer of the captured image to an AI service; they do not claim that every browser, operating system, or application handles local data identically. Mozilla says Firefox Screenshots collects interaction events such as use of Copy or Save full page, but not the URL or details of the captured image. Why a cloud screenshot service is not the private default
A remote screenshot service must process page content to render it. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation says its /screenshot endpoint renders a webpage by processing its HTML and JavaScript, and documents passing cookies or credentials to capture authenticated pages. That remote workflow makes a cloud renderer a poor default when the page contents must stay on your device. [Cloudflare Browser Run screenshot documentation]
Do not send an authenticated or otherwise sensitive page to a cloud renderer unless your organization has reviewed and approved that specific service and data flow. A service’s privacy or security claims do not change the fact that remote rendering requires page data to leave the local browser context.

Should you use a browser extension?
An extension may be useful if the built-in browser or operating-system tool cannot capture a full page, redact content, or export in the needed format. Check the current store listing, publisher, requested permissions, update history, and privacy policy before using it on sensitive pages.
OpenCapture’s repository describes local capture and editing and says capture code is injected into the clicked tab only on demand. It lists permissions including activeTab, scripting, downloads, and storage. Those are project claims and documentation, not an independent audit or a guarantee about future versions. If an extension’s permissions or publisher details do not meet your standards, use a built-in browser or operating-system capture tool instead. Avoid installing an extension merely to replace a tool already available on the device.

Follow your organization’s policy rather than trying to work around a restriction. Screenshot controls vary by product, platform, and management setup, and blocking one method does not establish that every capture route is blocked.

Troubleshooting local captures
- The Firefox shortcut does not open the screenshot tool: confirm the browser and operating system shortcut, then use the page context menu’s Take Screenshot command.
- The download is missing: check Firefox’s configured download folder and the browser’s download list. Choosing copy instead places the image on the clipboard rather than saving a file.
- The full-page button is unavailable in DevTools: enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under DevTools settings’ Available Toolbox Buttons.
- The capture contains the wrong content: use the Inspector’s Screenshot Node action when you need one element, or select the required area in the screenshot tool.
- A managed device blocks capture: stop and check with your administrator. A block on one shortcut or extension does not authorize another method.
