A screenshot saved to the agent’s local environment is not automatically in S3. For page content, browser automation through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Browser is usually the right capture path; use its OS-level InvokeBrowser screenshot action when you need the full desktop or content outside the browser viewport.
Choose what the screenshot needs to show
Decide the capture scope before writing the agent workflow. A screenshot can represent the current browser view, a particular page element, the full scrollable page, or the full desktop. These are not interchangeable: a page-level capture does not necessarily include native operating-system dialogs or other desktop content.
- Viewport: captures the currently visible browser area.
- Element: isolates a selected component, such as a chart or product card.
- Full page: captures the page’s scrollable content rather than only the current viewport.
- Full desktop: captures the screen beyond the browser page, which may be needed for native dialogs or alerts.
Playwright documents viewport, element, and full-page screenshots, with PNG, JPEG, or WebP output and filename and scale options: Playwright screenshots. AgentCore’s browser automation and InvokeBrowser provide different capture paths; choose based on whether the desired output is page content or the desktop. See the AgentCore Browser documentation and InvokeBrowser documentation.
Capture page content with AgentCore Browser and upload it to S3
The flow has four distinct stages: navigate, wait for the intended page state, capture bytes, and upload those bytes to an S3 bucket and key. The examples below use Python with Playwright and boto3. They assume you have configured access to an AgentCore Browser session and AWS credentials with permission to write to the selected bucket. AgentCore’s exact integration and SDK interfaces can change; consult the current AWS API reference for your runtime and region before adopting executable code.

1. Configure the browser session and AWS permissions
Use AgentCore Browser’s documented Playwright integration to connect to a browser session. The session setup is environment-specific, so do not copy a browser endpoint, token, or region from another deployment. Keep AWS credentials in the runtime’s normal credential provider, not in page content, prompts, or code sent to the website.
The execution identity needs permission to upload to the intended S3 bucket. Limit write access to the relevant bucket and, where practical, the object-key prefix used by this workflow. Do not grant broad bucket permissions just to make a screenshot upload succeed.
2. Navigate, wait, capture, and upload
This example shows the core Playwright and S3 operations once a connected Playwright page is available. Replace the URL, bucket, and key with application values. For an AgentCore Browser session, initialize page using the current AWS-documented Playwright connection flow before this code.
import boto3
from playwright.async_api import Page
async def capture_and_upload(page: Page, url: str, bucket: str, key: str) -> str:
await page.goto(url, wait_until="domcontentloaded", timeout=60_000)
# Wait for the content you actually need, rather than assuming that
# navigation completion means a client-rendered page is ready.
await page.locator("main").wait_for(state="visible", timeout=30_000)
image_bytes = await page.screenshot(
type="png",
full_page=True,
)
s3 = boto3.client("s3")
s3.put_object(
Bucket=bucket,
Key=key,
Body=image_bytes,
ContentType="image/png",
)
return f"s3://{bucket}/{key}"
The function uses a full-page PNG. For a viewport screenshot, omit full_page=True. To capture a component, use a locator’s screenshot operation, for example await page.locator(".chart").screenshot(type="png"), and upload the returned bytes in the same way. If you change the image format, set the S3 ContentType to match it.

Waiting for main is only an example: use a selector that means the specific content is ready in your target application. If the page loads important content after interaction or after an API response, wait for that condition explicitly. Avoid relying on a fixed delay unless the page provides no better readiness signal.
3. Keep the object key and content type deliberate
Choose a predictable key that fits your application’s access and retention design, such as a tenant- or job-scoped prefix. Avoid placing secrets or sensitive personal data in object names. The upload operation stores exactly the bytes captured; it does not make the object public.
If a client needs to display the screenshot, the AWS architecture example uses a presigned URL so the client can fetch the object from S3 without the application sending the image bytes through its WebSocket. A presigned URL grants time-limited access, so choose an expiration and distribution approach appropriate to the image’s sensitivity. See AWS’s browser use-case architecture example.
Use InvokeBrowser when the capture must include the desktop
Browser/CDP screenshots are suited to page content and DOM-oriented automation. AgentCore’s OS-level InvokeBrowser screenshot action is the alternative when the image must include the full desktop or when the workflow needs to interact with native operating-system dialogs or alerts. Its documented example returns PNG data that can be decoded and saved as screenshot.png; you can then pass those bytes to the same S3 upload operation.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Do not treat this as a setting that simply makes a normal page screenshot taller. It changes the capture scope from browser content to the desktop. Check the current InvokeBrowser reference for the action’s current input and output shape.
Use managed session recording for replay, not just an image
A direct screenshot upload stores the selected image. AgentCore session recording is a different feature for broader observability and replay: it can store browser interaction data in S3, including DOM changes, user actions, console logs, CDP events, and network events.
AWS lists an S3 bucket, an IAM execution role with write permissions, and a custom recording-enabled browser as prerequisites. Configure recording only when that wider interaction trail is needed; it is not a substitute for explicitly capturing and uploading a particular screenshot. See AgentCore session recording.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to get a website screenshot into an application or workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return an image from one GET request; your code still uploads the returned bytes to S3. Its API also removes supported cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-o shot.webp
Upload the downloaded file to S3 with your chosen AWS SDK or CLI and set the content type to WebP. ScreenshotNeo identifies page outcomes in response headers: bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server offers screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

The screenshot is blank or misses page content
Navigation finishing does not guarantee that a client-rendered page or a particular component is ready. Wait for a meaningful selector or application-specific state before capture. If content appears only after scrolling, interaction, or a delayed request, reproduce that state before taking the screenshot.
The image exists locally but not in S3
Capturing or writing a local file and uploading an object are separate operations. Confirm that the workflow calls S3’s upload operation with the captured bytes or file, and check the returned result and bucket/key. Verify that the execution role has write access to that destination.
The object uploads but cannot be displayed
Check that the object key is the one your client requests and that the object’s content type matches the image format. A successful private upload does not make the image publicly readable. Use an access-controlled retrieval flow such as a presigned URL when appropriate.

The capture omits a native dialog or desktop content
A browser page screenshot captures page content, not necessarily the surrounding desktop. Use the OS-level InvokeBrowser screenshot action when the full desktop, native dialogs, or alerts are in scope.
The recording workflow cannot write to S3
For managed session recording, verify all documented prerequisites: the target S3 bucket, an execution role with write permissions, and a custom browser configured for recording. Check the current AWS recording documentation for configuration details.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
The sources establish the capture-and-store architecture but do not establish a universal capture speed, AWS cost, or region-independent availability figure. Runtime, page behavior, image size, browser configuration, and storage choices affect a deployment; measure those in the environment where the workflow will run rather than assuming a benchmark.

- Wait for the smallest reliable readiness condition instead of an arbitrary long delay.
- Capture only the required scope and format to avoid unnecessary image data.
- Make retries safe for your application by deciding whether a repeated job should overwrite the same S3 key or create a new object.
- Define access, retention, and lifecycle rules for screenshots, especially if they may contain personal or confidential information.
- Account for the separate browser-session, image-transfer, and S3-storage operations in your own deployment’s cost model.
FAQ
Does AgentCore automatically upload a screenshot when it saves one?
No. A local save and an S3 upload are separate steps; the workflow must explicitly upload the image bytes or file.
Should I use session recording to save a screenshot?
Use direct capture and upload for a specific image. Session recording is for a broader browser interaction trail intended for observability or replay.
Can the screenshot be retrieved without routing the image through my application?
AWS’s architecture example uses an S3 presigned URL so a client can fetch the stored image directly from S3.
