A screenshot records the pixels already displayed by the page; it does not require a separate capture card. For a single webcam panel, Firefox’s selector capture is usually the most precise option. For repeatable layouts or recording, use OBS Browser Source. For automated captures, use an API such as ScreenshotNeo.
Before you capture: make the live frame appear
- Open the page containing the webcam panel.
- Wait until a current frame is visible rather than a loading spinner, black rectangle or placeholder.
- If the site requests camera access, grant it only when you are authorized to view that feed. A screenshot tool cannot recover a camera stream that the page was not permitted to display.
- Pause overlays, consent dialogs or chat widgets if they cover the video. If the page updates continuously, decide whether you need one displayed frame or a repeatable capture process.
Webcam video may be delivered through a canvas, video element or another rendered surface. In all cases, the browser screenshot captures what is composited on screen, not the camera hardware’s raw signal.
Firefox: capture the viewport, full page or webcam element
Firefox includes both a quick screen-capture command and a Developer Tools workflow. Mozilla Firefox Source Docs states: “You can use the Developer Tools to take a screenshot of the entire page, or of a single element in the page.”
Use the capture command
- On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+Shift+S. On macOS, press Command+Shift+S.
- Choose the visible page or full-page capture option.
- Save the resulting image when Firefox presents the capture controls.
This method is appropriate when the webcam is already visible and you want the viewport or the whole document. A full-page image can include content below the webcam panel and may not represent a single moment for pages that keep changing while Firefox scrolls and renders.

Capture only the webcam node with Developer Tools
- Open Developer Tools, then inspect the webcam panel or its containing element.
- Right-click the selected node and choose Screenshot Node.
- Save the file when Firefox asks for a destination.
Node capture keeps unrelated navigation, comments and page controls out of the image. If the video is nested inside a wrapper, select the element whose box includes the complete webcam display, including any labels you intentionally want to retain.
Use the Web Console selector helper
Firefox’s Web Console provides a :screenshot helper. Replace the selector with the webcam element’s CSS selector:

You can also use --clipboard to place the capture on the clipboard, --dpr to control device-pixel ratio, and --fullpage for a full-document image. A selector capture is preferable to cropping afterward because the browser computes the element’s rendered bounds directly.
Chrome: fix camera permission and choose a sharing workflow
Check site camera permission
If the webcam area is blank in Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings, select the camera permission, and review the site’s setting. Chrome supports choices including one-time permission, permission while visiting, and never allow. Reload the page after changing the setting, then wait for a visible frame before taking a screenshot.
Also check whether another application is using the camera, whether the selected camera is correct in the site’s own controls, and whether the page is loaded in a context where camera access is allowed. A screenshot utility only captures the page state Chrome has successfully rendered.

Capture a normal page image
For a one-off image, use Chrome’s built-in screenshot or operating-system capture while the webcam panel is visible. Keep the browser window at the desired size and avoid moving or resizing it during capture. This produces a viewport-oriented result; it does not isolate the element automatically.
Use display capture when the application needs a stream
If a web application must receive a user-selected tab, window or screen rather than a static image, use getDisplayMedia() or Chrome’s desktop-capture API. The browser displays a sharing prompt, and Chrome requires a user gesture before that prompt can open. This is a permissioned sharing workflow, not a shortcut around camera or screen-consent rules. It is more complex than taking a screenshot and should be used only when the application genuinely needs a live shared stream.
OBS Browser Source for repeatable composition or recording
OBS Browser Source is useful when you need the webpage and webcam panel placed into a controlled scene, captured repeatedly, or recorded. Add a Browser Source and configure:
- URL: the page that displays the webcam.
- Width and height: the exact canvas dimensions you want.
- Custom frame rate: select a rate appropriate for a still sequence or video workflow.
- Custom CSS: hide navigation, crop surrounding content, or style the page before OBS captures it.
- In OBS, add a Browser Source to a scene.
- Enter the page URL and set width and height.
- Use custom CSS when the webcam needs isolation or a consistent composition.
- Wait for the browser source to show a current frame.
- Capture a still from the scene or start recording.
OBS gives you repeatable dimensions and scene control, but it introduces another browser instance. Camera permission, login state, delayed rendering and site scripts still determine whether the webcam appears inside that source.

Use an element capture when the question is “only the webcam box.” Use viewport capture when surrounding page context matters. Use full-page capture for documentation, but avoid it when a moving feed must represent one tightly controlled moment. Use OBS when the same dimensions, CSS and layout must be reproduced over many captures.
Why a webcam is blank in a screenshot
The page was never granted camera access
Review the browser’s camera permission and the site’s own camera selector. Reload after changing permission. If authorization is unavailable, do not attempt to bypass it.

The frame had not rendered yet
Wait for a visible image, then capture. For Firefox’s console helper, add --delay. A delay helps with JavaScript startup, video initialization and overlays that disappear only after load.
A popup or consent layer covers the video
Dismiss the layer or capture the correct element node. If the overlay is part of the intended composition, leave it in place; otherwise remove it through the page’s controls or an OBS custom-CSS rule you are permitted to use.
The selector identifies the wrong box
Inspect the DOM again and choose the element whose rendered rectangle contains the video. A wrapper may be needed when the video itself has zero dimensions while its parent supplies the layout.
The stream is not available to that browser context
Another application may hold the camera, the selected device may be disconnected, or the page may be blocked by its security context. Resolve the underlying feed first; changing screenshot commands cannot create missing pixels.
The image changes during full-page capture
Use a viewport or element capture at the desired instant, or move the page into OBS and control the scene. Full-page capture is inherently less suitable for a continuously changing video.
