Use Playwright with your organization’s approved proxy settings, then save a viewport, full-page, or element screenshot. You’ll need the proxy address and protocol, any required credentials, and any certificate or browser-policy guidance from your IT team; those details are specific to your organization.
What you need before you start
- The proxy server address and permitted protocol, such as HTTP(S) or SOCKSv5.
- Proxy credentials, if authentication is required. These are distinct from a username and password for the website itself.
- Any organization-specific certificate instructions, such as whether an approved certificate authority must be trusted.
- An approved Playwright browser setup. Enterprise policies may limit automation or proxy behavior in managed Chrome and Edge.
Playwright’s network documentation says: “Proxy can be either set globally for the entire browser, or for each browser context individually.” See Playwright network configuration for the current options. Ask IT or your browser administrator for the actual endpoint, credentials, and applicable policies; the documentation cannot provide organization-specific values.
Configure the proxy and capture a screenshot
The example below uses JavaScript with Playwright’s Chromium browser. Replace the example proxy and target URL with values approved for your environment. Keep credentials out of source control; supply them through your organization’s approved secret-management method.
Install Playwright

If browser installation is blocked by the proxy, follow the browser-download guidance below before retrying.
Save a viewport, full page, or element
Save this as screenshot.js. The example configures an HTTP proxy at browser launch and saves a full-page PNG. Remove the authentication fields if the proxy does not require them.

Run it with node screenshot.js, setting PROXY_USERNAME and PROXY_PASSWORD in your environment if required. Replace fullPage: true with fullPage: false or omit it to capture the current viewport. To capture one component, use a locator instead of the page:

Set the proxy per browser context
If only one context should use the proxy, create the browser without a launch-level proxy and configure the context:

For authenticated proxies, add the appropriate username and password fields to the proxy object. Playwright documents HTTP(S) and SOCKSv5 proxy settings; confirm the scheme and authentication requirements with IT rather than guessing. Proxy authentication does not log you in to the destination site.
Choose the screenshot scope

For pages that load content as you scroll, a full-page screenshot may not include content that has not yet loaded. If necessary, scroll the page or wait for the relevant content before capturing it, then verify the output.
If browser installation fails behind the proxy
Playwright’s browser installation guide documents routing downloads through a proxy with HTTPS_PROXY. Set it in the shell before installing browsers, using the address your organization supplies:

If your shell or proxy setup requires a different syntax, follow your organization’s instructions. For a proxy that intercepts TLS and presents certificates from a custom certificate authority, Playwright documents NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS for trusting the required root certificate during browser downloads. The guide also documents PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT for increasing the download connection timeout when archive connections are slow. Consult Playwright browser installation for the current details. These settings address browser downloads; they do not replace approved proxy configuration or certificate trust for your organization.
Managed Chrome and Edge considerations
Playwright cautions that enterprise policies can affect its ability to launch and control Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, and those browsers honor policies that may constrain automation or proxy settings. If a managed browser refuses to launch or behaves differently from the expected setup, ask your administrator whether automation is permitted and which browser channel is approved. Do not assume that Playwright can override company policy. See Playwright’s browser documentation.

The page cannot connect or the proxy rejects the request
- Check the proxy host, port, and protocol against the values supplied by IT.
- Confirm whether the endpoint requires authentication and that the configured username and password are proxy credentials.
- Ask whether the destination must be allowlisted or whether the proxy requires a specific connection method.
Navigation fails with a certificate error
Ask IT whether the proxy intercepts TLS and which approved certificate authority must be trusted. Do not disable certificate validation as a workaround. The NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS setting in Playwright’s browser guide concerns browser downloads; follow your organization’s guidance for the browser session itself.

Playwright cannot install its browser
Set HTTPS_PROXY before the install command. If the connection is slow, use the documented PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT setting. If a custom CA causes a self-signed certificate chain error, consult IT about the correct root certificate and Playwright’s NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS download guidance.
Managed Chrome or Edge will not launch or is missing expected behavior
Enterprise policy may restrict automation, browser control, or proxy settings. Confirm which browser channel is approved and whether an administrator must change a policy; switching to another browser should also comply with company requirements.
The image is blank or missing content
First verify that the page loaded successfully in the configured browser context. If content appears only after scrolling or waiting for a page element, wait for it or trigger the needed scroll before taking the screenshot. Choose viewport, full-page, or locator capture according to the content you need to document.
