Use an agent-capable browser workflow to open a page, inspect its structure, perform the needed actions, confirm the resulting state, and save a screenshot or PDF. With Playwright, that means choosing between its agent CLI and MCP browser tools, then selecting the capture scope and output format that fit the task.
Choose a browser capture workflow
The right interface depends on where the agent runs and what it needs to control. Playwright documents both a local command-line workflow and browser tools exposed through MCP.

For a local workflow, the CLI provides file-oriented screenshot and PDF commands. For an agent that already uses MCP, the browser tool can capture a page or a target. These approaches have different setup and control models; the cited documentation does not establish a like-for-like price or performance comparison.
Use the agent CLI: open, inspect, act, and capture
Playwright’s agent CLI quick start documents an open, snapshot, interact, and re-snapshot loop. Use the accessibility snapshot to identify elements and references, then verify the page after interaction before saving an artifact. Checking the updated state is a practical safeguard against capturing the wrong page state, not a guarantee against every capture error.

- Open the page. Start the CLI workflow and navigate to the target URL using the commands documented for your installed version.
- Inspect the structure. Request a snapshot and use its accessibility tree and element references to find the relevant control. On a large page where you need only one target, the CLI documentation describes using
findinstead of taking a full snapshot. - Interact with the page. Use the accessible reference to click, fill, or otherwise perform the task. Then take another snapshot and check that the intended state is visible.
- Capture the artifact. Run the documented screenshot command for a viewport, element, or full page, or use the CLI’s
pdfcommand when the requested output is a document. Specify a useful filename and output location using the options supported by your installed CLI.
The exact commands and options can vary by interface and version; consult the CLI reference for current syntax. It documents custom screenshot filenames, PNG, JPEG and WebP output, a high-resolution device-pixel option, and a PDF command with a custom filename option.
Capture through Playwright MCP
When an AI agent has Playwright’s browser MCP tools available, use browser_take_screenshot after the page reaches the state you want to preserve. The tool documentation describes target selection by selector or reference, a fullPage option, image format and filename controls, and CSS versus device scale.
- Use a selector or element reference to focus on a component such as a form.
- Set
fullPagewhen the artifact should include the scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. - Choose the format and scale intentionally, and provide a filename if your workflow needs a predictable output path.
- Do not combine a target with full-page capture: the Playwright MCP documentation says those options cannot be used together.
Consult the agent documentation for the tool’s current schema and interface-specific behavior rather than assuming CLI flags also apply to MCP.

Select the right capture scope and output
Viewport, element, or full page
- Viewport: captures what is currently visible. Use it for a particular interaction state or a focused visual check.
- Element: captures a selected component when the whole layout would add noise, such as a form or chart.
- Full page: captures scrollable content for a page record or broader layout review. In Playwright MCP, it cannot be combined with a target element.
Screenshot or accessibility snapshot
A screenshot preserves visual evidence, including layout and canvas or chart content. An accessibility snapshot exposes page structure, text and references that an agent can use to locate and interact with controls. They solve different problems: use a snapshot to understand and operate the page, and a screenshot to inspect or document how it looks.

The Playwright CLI documentation lists PNG, JPEG and WebP, as well as a high-resolution device-pixel option. The MCP documentation distinguishes CSS-pixel and device-pixel scale. Higher-resolution output can be useful for visual inspection, but the CLI documentation cautions that its --hires coordinates no longer align with CSS-pixel mouse commands. Choose the scale based on the downstream use rather than assuming more pixels are always more useful.
PDF as a separate output
Use the CLI’s documented pdf command when the required artifact is a PDF rather than an image. The reviewed CLI documentation establishes PDF export and an optional filename; it does not establish identical PDF options across Playwright interfaces or guarantee pagination, headers, footers, or identical rendering across browsers. Check the documentation for the interface and version you run.

Protect page data and manage output files
A capture can expose whatever was visible in a signed-in page, including account or other sensitive information. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance says screenshots may contain sensitive page or account data, should be shown only to authorized users, and should not be placed in application logs. Its workflow also advises reviewing saved activity and deleting the session when finished. See the computer-use guide.
- Save captures to a deliberate output directory and use stable filenames so downstream steps can find the right artifact.
- Restrict access to screenshots and PDFs that contain signed-in or confidential page content.
- Avoid logging image data or sensitive page contents; review and clean up saved browser activity when the workflow is complete.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot shows the wrong page state
The agent may have captured before an interaction completed or before confirming the result. Follow the CLI’s inspect, interact, and re-snapshot loop, then capture only after checking the updated state.
The target is missing from a full-page MCP screenshot
Playwright MCP does not support combining a target with fullPage. Choose either a targeted element capture or a full-page capture.
High-resolution coordinates do not match mouse actions
The CLI’s --hires option uses device-pixel scaling, so coordinates no longer align with CSS-pixel mouse commands. Use the documented scale deliberately and account for the coordinate system in subsequent actions.

A PDF’s pagination differs from expectations
The CLI documentation confirms PDF export, but not identical pagination or rendering behavior across interfaces. Check the version-specific PDF documentation and inspect the resulting document before relying on its page breaks or layout.
A capture contains sensitive information
Limit access to the output, keep screenshot data out of application logs, and review or delete saved browser activity when the workflow is finished, following the computer-use guidance.
