The quickest method is Android’s built-in Screen recorder. Open the website video, swipe down twice to expand Quick Settings, tap Screen recorder, choose device or microphone audio and whether to show touches, then tap Start. Play the video and stop from the recorder notification when it ends. Recordings normally appear in Google Photos or your Gallery under Collections > On this device > Movies.
Screen recording is a standard Android feature from Android 11, although the tile name, controls and saved-file folder vary by phone maker and Android version. Copyright-protected video can produce a black recording or silence because the app or streaming service can block capture.
Before you start
- Use Android 11 or newer when possible. Android.com identifies Android 11 as the release in which screen recording became a standard feature. Older phones may lack a native recorder.
- Check storage. Video files can be large, especially at high resolution or frame rate. Close apps you do not need and connect your charger for a long recording.
- Decide which audio you need. Use device or internal audio when the recorder offers it. Microphone mode records sound through the phone’s microphone and can also pick up room noise.
- Confirm you are allowed to capture the material. A recording may be technically possible but still restricted by the site’s terms, copyright, or another agreement.
Record a website video with Android’s built-in recorder
- Open the video. In Chrome or another browser, load the page, sign in if required, and position the playback cursor where the recording should begin. Put the video in the orientation and size you want before starting.
- Expand Quick Settings. Swipe down from the top of the screen once, then swipe down again. On some phones you must swipe horizontally through the tiles to find Screen recorder.
- Add the tile if it is missing. Tap the pencil, edit, or three-dot control in Quick Settings, find Screen recorder in the available tiles, and drag it into the active area. Labels and edit controls differ by manufacturer.
- Open recorder options. Tap Screen recorder. Select device audio, microphone audio, both, or no audio if those choices are presented. Turn Show touches on only if you want visible touch indicators in the file.
- Start the capture. Tap Start. Android displays a countdown, giving you time to return to the browser. The recorder captures everything visible after the countdown, including notifications or app switches.
- Play the website video. Return to the page and press play. Avoid opening menus or receiving notifications over the content. If the page pauses when it loses focus, keep the browser in the foreground.
- Stop recording. Swipe down to open notifications and tap the Screen recorder notification or the stop control. Android finishes the file and usually shows a notification that it was saved.
Choose audio and touch indicators correctly
Device or internal audio
Choose the device-audio option when you want the browser’s playback sound without surrounding room noise. Not every phone exposes the same internal-audio choices, and an app can prevent its audio from being captured.
Microphone audio
Microphone mode records what the phone’s microphone hears. It is useful for narration or for devices that do not offer internal audio, but speakers, fans and nearby conversations may be audible. Use headphones only if the phone and recorder still provide the audio source you need.

Show touches
Touch indicators are useful for tutorials because viewers can see where you tapped. Leave them off for a clean copy of the website video.
Find, verify and edit the saved recording
Open Google Photos or the phone’s Gallery after stopping. Google’s documented path is Collections > On this device > Movies; some manufacturers instead expose a Screen recordings album. Sort by the newest item if you do not see it immediately.
- Play the file from beginning to end and check both picture and sound before deleting the source or repeating the capture.
- Trim the countdown and unused footage with the editor in Photos or Gallery. Save a copy if you need to preserve the original.
- If another app needs the file, use the Share button from Photos/Gallery or copy it from the Movies or screen-recordings folder in a file manager.
Why the recording is black or silent
A black video or missing sound does not necessarily mean that the recorder is broken. Android’s capture documentation explains that apps can prevent playback capture; the result can be audio silence, a black video stream, or both. Android.com specifically warns that copyright-protected video-on-demand content may not be recordable.
Protected playback is the most common cause
Streaming services and other protected players can mark their video as non-capturable. You may still see browser controls or subtitles while the captured video area is black. This is an enforcement mechanism, not a setting that can be reliably repaired on the phone.

Chrome’s Protected Content setting
Chrome’s control is at Settings > Site settings > Protected Content. It governs how Chrome handles protected playback; changing it is not a guaranteed way to defeat a provider’s capture restriction. Do not treat the setting as a workaround for a service that intentionally blocks recording.
Check an ordinary, unprotected page
Test the recorder on a freely playable video or on the browser itself. If that test records correctly, the original site is likely applying protected playback or an app-specific restriction. If every test is black, continue with the device troubleshooting below.
When Screen recorder is missing or behaves differently
The phone is older than Android 11
Android 11 is the documented baseline for the standard feature. A phone running an earlier release may rely on a manufacturer utility or a third-party recorder app. Verify the Android version in Settings > About phone > Android version; the exact path can vary.
The manufacturer renamed the feature
Search Quick Settings for Screen recorder, Screen recording, or a similar label. Some interfaces place it in a second page of tiles or behind an edit screen.

A work profile or policy blocks capture
Managed devices can disable screenshots and screen recording. If the tile is present but refuses to start, ask the device administrator whether capture is restricted rather than repeatedly changing browser settings.
Troubleshooting checklist

The built-in recorder is normally the simplest option, but the alternatives have different trade-offs:

Quality, performance and cost considerations
Keep the source stable
Use a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile connection, let the page finish loading, and avoid switching apps during playback. A network stall can leave a gap in the recording even when the recorder itself continues running.
Plan for file size
Long, high-resolution recordings consume substantially more storage than short clips. Make a short test first, confirm the saved location, and transfer completed files before starting a long session.

Protect privacy
Because the recorder captures the entire display, account names, private messages, passwords entered in other apps, and incoming notifications can become part of the file. Hide sensitive information and enable Do Not Disturb when appropriate.
Understand what is free
Android’s built-in recorder does not require a separate accessory or subscription. Third-party apps and external hardware can introduce their own prices, permissions and limitations; compare those costs with the length and quality you actually need.
