The quickest way to record a video playing in a browser on a Mac is macOS Screenshot: press Shift-Command-5, choose the screen area, set an audio source in Options, then start and stop the recording. QuickTime Player offers a similar workflow. If the result is black or silent, check permissions and remember that some protected apps deliberately block capture.
Before you record: permission, sound and rights
Open the webpage, sign in if necessary, and place the video where you want it. Recording capability is not the same as permission to reuse the file. Capture only material you are authorized to record, and check the site’s license or terms before publishing, sharing or editing it. Apple’s Website Terms of Use state that site content is protected by intellectual-property laws and, unless expressly allowed, may not be copied, reproduced, publicly displayed, encoded, transmitted or distributed without written consent.
Decide whether you need the browser’s picture, your voice, or both. The built-in recorder exposes microphone choices, but macOS does not always offer a simple “record system audio” switch for every setup. If the recording must include the website’s sound, test a short sample first and verify that the selected audio source is actually producing a level.
Method 1: macOS Screenshot (recommended)
- Open the video. Load the page in Safari, Chrome or another browser, select the desired quality, and pause at the point where you want to begin.
- Open recording controls. Press Shift-Command-5. A toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen.
- Choose the capture area. Select Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, a selected-window option may also appear.
- Configure Options. Choose a microphone when one is available, set a timer, select the save location, and enable pointer or click indicators if useful. Supported newer systems may offer SDR/H.264 or HDR/HEVC capture formats; use SDR/H.264 when broad playback compatibility matters.
- Start playback and recording. Click Record, then play the website video. A countdown runs first if you selected one.
- Stop. Click the Stop control in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc.
- Review the file. Unless you changed the destination, macOS saves the recording to the desktop. Open the resulting movie in QuickTime Player to trim, inspect audio and export a different format.
Get a clean browser-only recording
Use Record Selected Portion and draw a rectangle around the browser content. Leave a small margin so controls do not get clipped, and hide notifications before starting. If the browser is not maximized, recording the entire screen may include unrelated windows or the menu bar.

Include narration
In Options, select the microphone you intend to use. Speak during a short test, stop, and play it back. If the movie has your voice but no webpage sound, that is an audio-routing limitation rather than a video problem; use an approved audio-routing setup or a tool that explicitly supports system-audio capture.
Method 2: QuickTime Player
- Open QuickTime Player.
- Choose File > New Screen Recording, or press Control-Command-N.
- Use the arrow beside the Record button, when shown, to select available recording and microphone settings.
- Click the screen to record the full display, or drag over a region for a partial capture.
- Play the website video, then stop from the menu bar.
QuickTime opens the finished recording for playback, trimming and sharing. Screenshot is usually faster for a one-off capture; QuickTime is convenient when you want the recording to open immediately for editing.

Why the recording is black, silent or incomplete
A protected app or window
Apple warns: Some apps, such as the Apple TV app, may not let you record their windows.
A black rectangle, frozen frame or refusal to start can therefore be an intentional app or operating-system restriction. Do not treat a recorder setting as a guaranteed bypass.

Screen-recording permission is missing
For software that uses Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit, macOS requires screen-recording permission. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording, enable the application, quit it if prompted, and reopen it. The exact label can vary slightly by macOS release.

The microphone is wrong or muted
Return to Shift-Command-5 > Options and select the intended microphone. Check System Settings > Sound > Input, confirm the input meter moves, and make sure another application is not holding an exclusive audio path. A microphone selection records your voice; it does not automatically guarantee capture of protected website audio.
Only part of the page was recorded
Selected-portion capture records pixels, not the webpage’s document structure. If the video changes size, a responsive layout shifts, or a notification appears, the change is still recorded. Set the browser zoom and window size before drawing the selection, and avoid moving the window during capture.

The file is too large or playback is incompatible
Long, high-resolution recordings consume substantial storage. Stop other screen-intensive applications, keep adequate free disk space, and select SDR/H.264 when the file must play on older software. HDR/HEVC can be useful on supported systems but may require newer playback or editing support.
Developer options: ScreenCaptureKit and AVFoundation
If you are building a Mac application rather than making a one-off recording, Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit provides high-performance screen and audio capture with fine-grained source selection. Your app must request screen-recording permission before it can capture. Use it when you need to choose a display, window or other source programmatically and process frames or audio as they arrive.

Quality, reliability and storage checklist
- Run a 10–15 second test before recording a long lesson or presentation.
- Disable notifications and close unrelated windows.
- Use a wired or stable network connection for streaming pages when possible.
- Keep the Mac awake and connected to power for long captures.
- Confirm the browser tab is playing at the intended resolution and speed.
- Check both picture and audio before closing the source page.
- Trim unwanted lead-in and lead-out in QuickTime Player rather than re-recording.
- Keep the original file if you may need to prove what was captured or re-edit it later.

Will a private or paywalled video record?
Access may allow playback, but the service can still apply protected-window or digital-rights restrictions. A successful login is not a promise that capture will be permitted.
What format does Screenshot save?
Screenshot saves a movie file to the selected destination, with the desktop as the default. The available capture-format choices depend on the macOS version and Mac hardware.

Can I record a browser video while using another app?
You can record the entire screen, but anything visible or audible in the selected area during the recording may be included. Keep unrelated windows and notifications out of the capture.

No special browser control is required, but closing or navigating away from the page changes the pixels being recorded. Stop the capture before leaving the page if you need the final frame preserved.
The Bottom Line
Use Shift-Command-5 for the fastest Mac recording, QuickTime when you want immediate editing, and ScreenCaptureKit or AVFoundation for an application you are building. Black frames, missing audio and reuse restrictions can be deliberate limits, not bugs.
