To capture repeatable SEO audit screenshots with Puppeteer, set a consistent viewport or device before navigation, wait for the page state you need, and save the result with page.screenshot(). Use fullPage: true for a full-page image or capture a specific element when the evidence concerns one component. Screenshots document appearance; inspect the DOM and page metadata separately for SEO values such as titles, canonicals, and robots directives.
Build a repeatable desktop capture
Keep the capture conditions consistent across pages and audit runs. Record the URL, viewport, device or user-agent, wait condition, and capture scope. Puppeteer recommends setting viewport conditions before navigation; changing the viewport can trigger a reload in some cases. See the Puppeteer Page API.
- Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with
npm install puppeteer. - Set the viewport before navigating.
- Navigate to the target URL and wait for a page state appropriate to the audit.
- Capture the viewport or full page, then close the browser.
This runnable CommonJS example accepts the audited URL as its first command-line argument and saves a full-page PNG:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) {
throw new Error('Usage: node audit-shot.js https://example.com');
}
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 900 });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'audit-desktop.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Puppeteer’s official screenshot guide uses networkidle2 in its example. Treat it as one possible readiness condition, not proof that every client-rendered section, lazy image, or third-party widget has finished. Choose a selector or condition tied to the content your audit actually needs. The guide documents the basic capture flow: Screenshots | Puppeteer Guide.

Choose the screenshot scope and format
Capture the initial viewport
Call page.screenshot({ path: 'audit.png' }) to capture the visible viewport. The fullPage option defaults to false.
Capture a full page
Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. This is useful for documenting layout and content beyond the initial viewport, but a very long page can produce a large image.
Capture a region or element
Use the clip option to capture a rectangular region. For a DOM element, locate it and call its screenshot method:
const element = await page.$('main h1');
if (!element) {
throw new Error('Target element was not found');
}
await element.screenshot({ path: 'audit-heading.png' });
ElementHandle.screenshot() attempts to scroll a hidden element into view by default. Check the result when the target is covered by overlays or when the element’s visibility matters to the audit. The available screenshot settings, including clipping and output type, are documented in Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions (version 25.12.0 on the page).

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
Choose an image type
PNG is the documented default. Screenshot options also support JPEG and expose a JPEG quality setting; quality does not apply to PNG. Use filenames that identify the page and conditions, such as pricing-mobile-390x844-2026-10-04.png, so files remain interpretable when collected across an audit.
Capture a mobile rendering
Set device emulation before page.goto(), then save the result under a filename that identifies the device or viewport. Puppeteer’s page.emulate(device) combines a device’s user-agent and viewport settings; see the Page API for the current API details. If you use a custom mobile viewport instead, configure the dimensions and any relevant mobile settings consistently before navigation. A mobile screenshot is meaningful only when the conditions are recorded and repeatable.
Make the evidence useful for an SEO audit
A screenshot shows what the browser rendered at a particular moment and viewport. It cannot, by itself, establish whether a page is indexable, crawlable, has a correct canonical, contains valid structured data, ranks for a query, or will appear a particular way in search results.
Pair the image with programmatic inspection for facts that need to be read or compared. Puppeteer’s Page API exposes the page title, URL, DOM evaluation, and page content. For example:

const auditData = await page.evaluate(() => ({
title: document.title,
canonical: document.querySelector('link[rel="canonical"]')?.href ?? null,
robots: document.querySelector('meta[name="robots"]')?.content ?? null,
headings: [...document.querySelectorAll('h1, h2')].map(node => ({
tag: node.tagName,
text: node.textContent.trim()
}))
}));
console.log(auditData);
This reads values from the rendered DOM; it does not validate their correctness. For questions about JavaScript SEO or title links in Google Search, consult Google’s documentation on JavaScript SEO basics and influencing title links.
Compare screenshots fairly
When reviewing a set of pages or before-and-after changes, keep these conditions aligned and include any differences in the audit notes:
- Viewport and device: use the same dimensions and emulation conditions.
- Capture scope: compare viewport with viewport, full page with full page, or the same target element.
- Readiness: use the same wait condition and verify that audit-critical content is present.
- Audit purpose: separate visual layout evidence from checks of machine-readable page data.
These controls make visual differences easier to interpret; they do not turn screenshots into a substitute for DOM, response, or directive inspection.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check whether navigation reached the intended URL and whether the content had rendered before capture. A network-idle condition may not correspond to completion of a site-specific render. Wait for a relevant selector or condition, and inspect the page’s URL and DOM when diagnosing the issue.

Lazy-loaded content is missing
Full-page capture does not prove that every lazy-loaded image or section has been requested and rendered. If that content matters, use a site-specific readiness condition and verify the relevant elements before saving the screenshot.
The target element cannot be found
Confirm that the selector matches the rendered DOM and that the page has reached the state where the element exists. Add an explicit check, as in the element example, rather than silently saving an unrelated image.
Desktop and mobile captures unexpectedly differ
Make sure emulation or viewport settings were applied before navigation and that the same user-agent and dimensions were used across runs. Puppeteer notes that changing viewport settings can trigger a reload in some cases, so configure them early.
The image is too large or the relevant content is hard to compare
Use a viewport capture for above-the-fold evidence, a clip for a specific region, or an element screenshot for one component instead of always capturing the whole page. Choose PNG or JPEG according to the evidence and file-size needs; JPEG quality affects JPEG output only.
