To capture an infinite-scrolling page with Selenium, first scroll the page’s actual feed container until the content you need has loaded, then take the screenshot. A screenshot command captures the current browser state; it does not make the site fetch content farther down the page. Use a finite loop that waits for observable progress, and choose a viewport or full-document capture only after loading the content.
Why a screenshot alone misses later content
Selenium’s standard screenshot methods capture the current browsing context or a selected element. They do not automatically scroll an infinite feed or trigger its later requests. Selenium can execute JavaScript through WebDriver, so you can scroll the document or a nested element and inspect the page while it loads. See the Selenium WebDriver documentation and the Selenium Python WebDriver API.
Load the feed before capturing it
- Open the page and let its initial content settle. Wait for a page-specific element or loading indicator rather than assuming navigation means the feed is ready.
- Find the scrolling context. Many pages scroll the document, but embedded feeds may scroll inside an element. Inspect the page’s DOM and identify the element that owns the feed. Scrolling
windowwill not advance a separately scrolling panel. - Scroll and wait for a meaningful change. Track an item count, last item, scroll height, or loading indicator. After each scroll, wait for that signal to change or for loading to finish.
- Stop deliberately. Stop when the desired content is present, the page exposes an end marker, or repeated checks show no progress. Set a maximum number of iterations or another finite limit; some feeds do not terminate.
- Capture and inspect. Take a normal screenshot for the current viewport. If you need the whole page, use a documented full-document method supported by your browser and binding, or capture sections as the feed advances.
Runnable Python example for a document-scrolling feed
This example uses a CSS selector for feed items and a bounded number of scroll attempts. Replace the URL and selectors with ones from the target site. The explicit wait checks whether the item count increases; the fixed maximum prevents an endless loop if loading stalls or the feed has no end.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.common.exceptions import TimeoutException
URL = "https://example.com/feed"
ITEM_SELECTOR = ".feed-item" # Replace with the site's item selector.
MAX_SCROLLS = 30
WAIT_SECONDS = 10
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
# Uncomment for a headless run:
# options.add_argument("--headless=new")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.set_window_size(1440, 1000)
driver.get(URL)
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, WAIT_SECONDS)
# Replace this readiness condition if the page has a better one.
wait.until(lambda d: d.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ITEM_SELECTOR))
for _ in range(MAX_SCROLLS):
before_count = len(driver.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ITEM_SELECTOR))
before_height = driver.execute_script(
"return document.documentElement.scrollHeight"
)
driver.execute_script(
"window.scrollTo(0, document.documentElement.scrollHeight)"
)
try:
wait.until(lambda d: (
len(d.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ITEM_SELECTOR)) > before_count
or d.execute_script(
"return document.documentElement.scrollHeight"
) > before_height
))
except TimeoutException:
# No observable progress within the wait window: stop, rather than loop forever.
break
driver.save_screenshot("feed-viewport.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
The progress test is an implementation pattern, not a universal guarantee: a site may load content without changing item count or document height, or may change its markup. Choose a signal that actually reflects the target feed. If a known end marker exists, wait for it and use it as the stop condition.

For a nested scrolling feed
Replace the document scroll command and height check with the feed element’s scrollTop and scrollHeight. For example, after identifying the correct selector:
container = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".feed-container")
driver.execute_script(
"arguments[0].scrollTop = arguments[0].scrollHeight", container
)
current_height = driver.execute_script(
"return arguments[0].scrollHeight", container
)
Use the same bounded-loop approach, comparing the container’s item count or scroll height before and after each scroll. If the container is replaced during loading, locate it again rather than relying on a stale element reference.

Choose the screenshot method after loading
Viewport screenshot
driver.save_screenshot("feed-viewport.png") saves the current window as a PNG. This is appropriate when one viewport is the desired result or when you capture multiple sections deliberately. Selenium’s Python API also returns screenshot data as PNG bytes; see its common WebDriver reference.
Firefox full-document screenshot
The Firefox Python WebDriver reference documents full-document screenshot methods that save a PNG or return PNG bytes/base64. This addresses the capture extent, not lazy loading: scroll through the feed first so its content is present. Confirm that the method is supported by your chosen browser and Selenium binding; see Firefox WebDriver documentation.

Very long or virtualized feeds
A single tall image may be impractical, and a virtualized feed may remove off-screen items from the DOM as you scroll. In that case, a final full-document image can omit items that appeared earlier. Capture sections as the feed advances, retain their order, and inspect for gaps or overlap. Where appropriate and permitted, a site’s data or export route may be more reliable than trying to preserve a transient rendered feed.
Stability, performance, and reproducibility
- Prefer state-based waits. Waiting for an item count, end marker, or loading indicator to change is more reliable than using a long fixed sleep. A short fixed delay can help with a site that offers no observable signal, but network and rendering times vary.
- Account for layout shifts. Late images, ads, sticky headers, and animations can move content after it appears. Wait for the relevant content and inspect the output; a page that is still changing can produce inconsistent captures.
- Set bounds that match the job. More scrolls mean more page work and longer runs. Set a maximum iteration count, per-change timeout, and desired content limit so an unresponsive or effectively endless feed cannot stall the job.
- Record the setup when repeatability matters. Keep the browser and driver versions, viewport size, target selector, and stopping condition with the output. These details help explain differences between runs.
Troubleshooting
- The screenshot contains only the first screen: the page has not been scrolled far enough, or the capture happened before new items loaded. Scroll the correct container and wait for a content change before saving.
- Scrolling has no effect: identify whether the feed is inside a nested element, then scroll that element rather than
window. Check that the selected element is the feed’s active scroll container. - The loop stops even though more content exists: the chosen progress signal may not change for that site. Track a different signal, such as a last-item identifier or a loading-state transition, and adjust the wait condition.
- The loop never finishes: the feed may be unbounded or its signal may keep changing. Add a maximum iteration count, a target item count, or a known end-marker condition.
- Earlier items are missing from the tall screenshot: the feed may be virtualized and remove off-screen nodes. Capture sections as you advance instead of relying on one final document capture.
- The image has overlaps or unexpected gaps: late-loading assets, sticky elements, or layout shifts may have changed the page during capture. Wait for a stable page-specific condition and review the saved image.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot make Selenium load an infinite feed?
No. It changes the captured extent; you still need to scroll and wait for lazy content to load first.

Can Selenium capture every item in a virtualized feed in one image?
Not reliably if the site removes off-screen items from the DOM. Capture sections while scrolling so earlier items are retained.
