Keep the authenticated session open, capture only what you need, then check the image for sensitive information before saving or sharing it. Private Browsing or Incognito does not make the resulting screenshot private.
Before you capture a logged-in page
First confirm that your account, workplace policy, and the site’s rules allow you to capture the content. Being able to view a page does not automatically mean you may distribute an image of it. Keep the authenticated browser session open; signing in is what lets the browser display the page, and a normal browser screenshot captures what is visible in that session.
Decide whether you need the whole page, the current viewport, or one specific element. Capture the smallest useful area. Then inspect the image for names, account numbers, private messages, access tokens, notifications, and unrelated tabs. Cover or crop sensitive details before sharing, store the result somewhere access-controlled, and delete temporary copies when policy permits.
Capture a full page or one element in Firefox
Firefox’s built-in tools can capture a full page or a selected element without requiring an extension. The steps below are for desktop Firefox; available controls can differ by version.

Enable the full-page screenshot button
- Open the page in Firefox and sign in if required. Leave the page in the state you need to capture.
- Open Developer Tools. You can use the browser menu under More tools and then Web Developer Tools, or the keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
- Open the Developer Tools settings and enable the option to show the screenshot button in the toolbox. Firefox’s interface wording may vary by release.
- Select the screenshot button in the toolbox to capture the full page. The image is saved to your Downloads location.
Full-page captures are useful for long records or articles, but they can include content well below the visible viewport. Review the whole image—not just its top—for information you did not intend to expose.
Capture one element with Screenshot Node
- Open Developer Tools and choose the Inspector panel.
- Select the element you want in the page, using the Inspector’s element picker if needed.
- In the Inspector, open the selected node’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.
- Check the saved image to make sure it contains the intended element and no unexpected private data.
Element capture can be a better choice than cropping a large screenshot when you need a specific card, table, or message. It does not change whether you are authorized to share that content.
Use Firefox’s Web Console screenshot helper
Firefox also provides a :screenshot helper in the Web Console. It supports options such as a delay, device-pixel-ratio setting, filename, and clipboard output. Consult the Firefox documentation for the syntax and options available in your installed release: Firefox screenshot tool documentation. Clipboard output is not a privacy safeguard: clipboard managers or synced devices may retain copied images.
Use a native region or window capture when appropriate
If your browser or operating system provides a native screenshot shortcut, use its region or window mode when you only need a portion of the page. Select the smallest useful area and avoid including browser tabs, unrelated applications, or notifications. Native capture generally records what is on screen rather than producing a complete long page, so it may not be suitable for content that extends below the viewport.

Private or sensitive information can remain in the image even when it is not obvious at first glance. Review the saved file before attaching it to a ticket, sending it to a colleague, or placing it in a shared folder.
Why a screenshot might be blocked
Managed Chrome screenshot-prevention policy
An organization can use Chrome Enterprise Premium policies to prevent screenshots on configured sites for managed users on Windows and Mac. Google says this control applies to screenshots taken with keyboard shortcuts and by apps or extensions using the Chrome API. Screen-share prevention is supported on Windows. If capture is blocked on a work device, ask your administrator whether the restriction is intentional and what approved sharing method to use: Google Chrome screenshot-prevention policy.
Site, DRM, or operating-system restrictions
A site or application may use DRM, its own policy, or operating-system security controls to restrict capture. Do not try to evade a restriction. Use an approved export, print-to-PDF, or sharing function provided by the site or administrator instead. If no approved option is available, ask the administrator or content owner.
Screen sharing is different from taking a screenshot
Web applications that share a screen use the Screen Capture API. Its getDisplayMedia() method presents a user-mediated picker; the user chooses what to share. Options such as displaySurface, monitorTypeSurfaces, and selfBrowserSurface help applications reduce the chance of sharing an entire monitor or the current tab by mistake. They do not override a user’s selection or guarantee that sensitive information will be hidden. See MDN’s Screen Capture API documentation.

Does Incognito or Private Browsing keep screenshots private?
No. Private browsing primarily changes how the browser handles browsing history and site data; it does not guarantee that a screenshot avoids downloads, the clipboard, backups, or recipients. Mozilla’s Firefox Screenshots FAQ states: “For now, shots taken while you browse privately would show up in your normal downloads list.” Firefox removed Screenshots support from Private Browsing until a more private experience could be built. Chrome’s extension guidance also says extensions do not run in Incognito by default and should respect Incognito’s promise not to leave tracks. That behavior is about extension access; it does not make screenshots created by other means confidential. Treat the image itself as sensitive data, regardless of which browsing mode you used. Be cautious with screenshot extensions
An extension may need permission to read or change page contents to capture them. That can expose private content beyond the particular screenshot you intend to make. Install only from a trusted source, review the requested host permissions, and prefer a local browser tool when it meets your needs.
Apple says Safari web extensions need user permission to access and update web pages and recommends asking only for the minimum permissions needed. In Safari 17 and later, granting access to a site can extend to that site’s use across profiles, Private Browsing, and browsing without a profile. Check the permission prompt and your Safari version before granting access. See Apple’s Safari web extension guidance.

Chrome gives similar advice: “Only request the minimum amount of data an extension needs.” Review how an extension stores or transmits page data before using it on authenticated sites. See Chrome’s extension permissions guidance.

If you need repeatable captures in a developer workflow, a screenshot API can render a URL and return an image or PDF. A key distinction is authentication: a request to a private page must be authorized by the service and supplied with whatever session or credentials the page requires. Do not send account passwords, cookies, or tokens to a service unless your organization permits it and you understand how they are handled. The browser steps above are the safer starting point for an occasional capture inside an existing signed-in session.

Troubleshooting capture problems
