To capture a page behind a login, open it in your authorized browser session, bring the content you need into view, and use the browser’s screenshot tool. Choose a visible-area, full-page, or element capture based on what you need to document. “Private page” here means an authenticated or access-controlled page—not a private-browsing window.
Only capture pages you are authorized to access. If a site or workplace policy blocks screenshots, ask for an approved export, print view, or support workflow instead of bypassing the restriction.
Choose the right kind of capture
A screenshot records what the browser rendered at a particular moment. Load the page into the state you want to document, wait for the relevant content to appear, and check that the intended details are visible before capturing.

A narrower capture can expose less information. If you need page structure or text rather than its visual appearance, use an accessibility snapshot or read the page text instead; screenshots are visual records, not a dependable way to extract structure or interaction details. Playwright MCP puts it plainly: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” Microsoft Playwright’s screenshot guidance describes these different uses.

Take a one-off screenshot in Firefox
Mozilla documents built-in Firefox controls for full-page and selected-element captures. Exact controls may vary by browser version; these steps describe Firefox’s documented workflow, not identical menus in Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
- For a full-page capture: Open Firefox Developer Tools, go to Settings, and enable the screenshot button in the available toolbox buttons. Use that button to capture the page; Firefox saves the image in Downloads.
- For one page element: Open the Inspector, select the element, then use the context-menu command “Screenshot Node.”
- For console options: Firefox’s Web Console supports the
:screenshothelper, with documented options for delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, full-page capture, and a selector.

Automate repeated captures with Playwright
If you need repeatable screenshots, Playwright’s page.screenshot() API can save an image to a file with its path option. Its screenshot guidance documents viewport, full-page, and selected-element captures, along with output format, scale, quality, and locator masking options.
A locator mask overlays the matched element’s bounding box in the screenshot. It can help with visual test artifacts, but it is not a universal redaction guarantee: sensitive information may be repeated elsewhere or change position. Check the final image before sharing it. For reliable visual comparisons, keep the environment consistent. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Review privacy and permissions before sharing
- Check the entire image for names, messages, account identifiers, balances, financial or health details, and incidental browser or interface information.
- Crop or redact information you do not need to share, using an appropriate trusted tool. Reopen the final file and confirm that the redaction is actually present.
- Do not include credentials or session tokens in a screenshot, and do not use a capture workflow to evade access controls or a site’s restrictions.
- If capture is blocked by a site or workplace rule, request an approved export, print view, or support process.
Chrome DevTools’ Privacy and security panel is for inspecting matters such as third-party cookies, HTTPS/security details, and mixed content; those diagnostics do not establish that a screenshot is safe to disclose. Chrome’s panel documentation explains its scope. A W3C TPAC 2024 presentation on capture prevention discusses policy examples intended to protect sensitive on-screen information, including an Edge for Business policy behavior that can show a black screen during capture attempts. That example is not a universal browser behavior.
