Short answer: Loki is designed to capture and compare Storybook stories, not to take screenshots from a list of unrelated URLs. If your pages are Storybook stories, use Loki’s baseline-and-test workflow below. For arbitrary URLs, use a browser automation tool such as Playwright or a screenshot API.

What Loki captures—and what it does not

The Loki documentation describes a Storybook visual-regression workflow: it captures screenshots of tested stories and compares them with reference images you keep in your project. It does not document an option for supplying Loki with an arbitrary list of web URLs. See the Loki getting-started guide and CLI reference, both last updated August 27, 2024.

So “multiple URLs” can mean two different tasks:

  • Multiple Storybook pages or components: run Loki against the stories in your Storybook, optionally narrowing the run with its filters.
  • Unrelated public or internal web pages: Loki’s documented workflow is not a URL-batch screenshotter. Use browser automation or a screenshot service instead.

Capture and compare multiple Storybook stories with Loki

These commands follow the documented Yarn workflow. Run them from the project directory. Loki’s setup guide says initialization detects the project and adds defaults to package.json.

  1. Install Loki and initialize it:
    yarn add loki --dev
    yarn loki init
  2. Start your Storybook server. Loki needs access to the stories it will capture. Use the server command and configuration appropriate to your project.
  3. Create reference screenshots:
    yarn loki update
    The guide says the default reference-image location is a loki folder. Check the generated images into version control; the guide also mentions Git LFS as an option.
  4. Run the visual comparison:
    yarn loki test
    Loki captures the stories and compares the resulting images with the references.
  5. Review differences before accepting them. Inspect the current and difference output folders. If the visual change is intentional, update the references with yarn loki approve, or use the command suggested for approving only failed tests.

Do not approve a changed baseline solely to make a failing test pass: first confirm that the difference is expected. A baseline is the comparison point for later runs, so accepting an unintended change can hide a regression.

Filter stories and tune capture behavior

The CLI reference lists options to narrow which stories or browser configurations run and to set output locations. It also documents Chrome capture controls. Check the version installed in your project before relying on a particular flag: the reference was last updated August 27, 2024.

Need Documented Loki option or behavior
Run a subset of stories --storiesFilter
Limit browser configurations --configurationFilter
Limit targets --targetFilter
Change where images are written CLI settings include output, reference, and difference folders.
Adjust Chrome parallelism Concurrency is configurable; the documented default is four stories.
Adjust the page-load timeout The documented default is 60,000 milliseconds.
Control capture details Chrome settings include a selector, animation handling, and retries.

The filter flags select Loki stories, configurations, or targets; they are not a substitute for a URL-list input. When running Loki through Yarn or npm, put -- before arguments you want the package runner to pass through. For example, the forwarding pattern is yarn loki test -- --storiesFilter=<filter>; use the exact flag syntax accepted by your installed Loki version.

Capture screenshots of arbitrary URLs with Playwright

If each input is an unrelated URL, a browser automation script can navigate to each address, wait for an appropriate point, and save a screenshot. Playwright’s official documentation shows page screenshots, full-page capture, and visual comparisons, but does not provide a ready-made batch-URL command. You must implement the loop and decide how to name files and handle failed navigations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For reference, the basic Playwright Test page-capture pattern is:

import { test } from '@playwright/test';

test('capture a page', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png', fullPage: true });
});

For multiple URLs, place the navigation and screenshot calls in a loop or separate tests, and generate a unique, filesystem-safe filename for each URL. Choose a wait condition based on the site: a page’s initial load event may not mean that client-rendered content or lazy-loaded images are ready. Playwright supports full-page screenshots, but a full-page capture does not by itself guarantee that every lazy image has loaded.

Keep visual comparisons reproducible by generating and comparing snapshots in the same environment. Playwright notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Its guidance is at Playwright visual comparisons.

Troubleshooting Loki runs

  • Loki does not capture the URLs you expected: confirm that they are Storybook stories. The documented CLI material does not establish an arbitrary URL-list feature.
  • The command ignores a filter or other option: confirm the option exists in your installed version and pass runner arguments after -- when invoking through Yarn or npm.
  • A story times out: check that Storybook is reachable and that the story finishes loading within the configured timeout. The CLI reference lists 60,000 milliseconds as the Chrome default; adjust the setting only if the page legitimately needs more time.
  • Screenshots differ across machines or CI runs: keep the operating system, browser version, capture settings, and execution mode consistent. Rendering can vary with the environment, so compare images produced in the same environment.
  • A diff appears after a deliberate design change: inspect the current and difference images, then update the reference using Loki’s approval workflow only after confirming the change is intended.

Or skip the browser setup

For arbitrary URLs, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API returns an image or PDF from a GET request; the documentation is at ScreenshotNeo API docs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Loki capture several Storybook stories in one run?

Yes. Loki runs against the tested stories in your Storybook; use its story, configuration, or target filters to narrow a run.

Does Loki have a documented option for a list of unrelated URLs?

The reviewed Loki CLI documentation does not describe one. Use a browser automation script or a screenshot API for arbitrary URL lists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can the same screenshot look different on two machines?

Browser and operating-system versions, capture settings, hardware, and headless mode can affect rendering. Run comparisons in a consistent environment.
