Set the browser’s device type and viewport to desktop before loading the product page. In Chrome DevTools, select Desktop in Device Mode; in Playwright, use a desktop browser context and set its viewport before navigation. Then capture the visible viewport or the full page. This can avoid redirects associated with emulated mobile signals, but it cannot prevent a site from redirecting for other reasons.
Why a product page may redirect to a mobile site
Some sites may use browser characteristics such as user-agent or device settings when choosing what to serve. Chrome DevTools and Playwright let you configure these characteristics, but their documentation does not establish that every site’s redirect is caused by them. A desktop viewport alone is therefore not a guaranteed fix.
Chrome Device Mode approximates mobile behavior; it does not run the page on an actual phone. If you need to know what a physical handset receives, use real-device testing rather than treating emulation as definitive. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation explains the distinction.
Capture a desktop screenshot manually in Chrome
- Open DevTools. Open the product page in Chrome and open DevTools. Turn on Device Mode if you need to specify responsive dimensions.
- Choose the desktop context. In the Device Type menu, select Desktop. Do not select a mobile device profile if you want the desktop experience. Chrome’s Device Mode supports responsive dimensions and device profiles, and custom device settings can include user-agent and device type. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.
- Set dimensions before loading the page. Choose the desktop viewport width and height you want to document, then navigate to the product page or reload it. Loading with the intended dimensions matters: a site may not respond to a later resize in the same way it responds to those dimensions at initial navigation.
- Check the result. Note the final URL and inspect the rendered page. If it still redirects, the selected device settings may not be the cause; the site may apply other routing rules.
- Capture the right area. Open the DevTools command menu and choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the full page, including content below the fold. These options are documented in Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.
Automate repeat captures with Playwright
Use Playwright when you need the same desktop context and screenshot settings repeatedly. Set the viewport before navigation, and avoid applying a mobile device profile when you intend to load the desktop version. Playwright device profiles can set user-agent, screen size, viewport, and touch capability; those settings can affect how a site identifies the browser. This runnable Node.js example uses a desktop Chromium context, sets its viewport before opening the page, and saves a full-page PNG. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser first with npm install playwright and npx playwright install chromium.

The example does not set a mobile user-agent, touch capability, or device profile. Playwright’s screenshot API also supports a viewport-only screenshot: remove fullPage: true to capture only the visible area.

When to change the browser signals
For a desktop capture, begin with the default desktop browser context and the intended viewport. If the site still redirects, investigate the final URL and its behavior rather than assuming a particular signal is responsible. If your goal is specifically to test mobile behavior, use a mobile profile intentionally; Playwright’s device emulation settings are documented at playwright.dev/docs/emulation.
Troubleshoot redirects and unexpected screenshots
- The browser lands on a mobile URL anyway: Confirm that a mobile device profile or mobile user-agent override is not active, then reload after setting the desktop context. If the redirect persists, browser emulation settings may not control that site’s routing.
- The page looks mobile after resizing: Set the viewport before navigating or reloading. A post-load resize may not recreate the conditions under which the site chose its initial layout.
- The screenshot only shows the top of the page: In DevTools choose Capture a full size screenshot, or in Playwright set
fullPage: true. Use the viewport-only capture when you need just what is currently visible. - The simulated result differs from a phone: Device Mode is an approximation, not an actual handset. Verify on a real device when physical-device behavior is important.
- The script times out or captures an incomplete page: Check whether the page loaded successfully and whether the timeout is appropriate for it. Playwright’s documented navigation and screenshot controls are described in the Page navigation API and the Page screenshot API.
