For repeatable screenshots across many known widths, use Playwright with an explicit viewport for each size. Both methods emulate a viewport; verify on a real phone when behavior depends on actual mobile hardware.
Choose the right capture method

Chrome describes Device Mode as a way to approximate a page’s appearance and performance on mobile; it does not run the app on a physical phone. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.
Capture breakpoints interactively in Chrome DevTools
- Open the web app in Chrome, then open DevTools. Use the device toolbar toggle to turn on Device Mode.
- Set the dimensions control to Responsive. Enter the width and height you want, or drag the viewport handles. Use the widths defined by the app’s CSS or design requirements; there is no universal set of breakpoints.
- To find a CSS media-query transition, open the device toolbar’s More options menu and enable Show media queries. The bars indicate min-width and max-width breakpoints. Click between bars to move the viewport to that width and inspect the resulting layout.
- Choose the capture scope from the capture menu: take a screenshot of the visible viewport or a full-size screenshot of the page.
- Repeat at the widths that matter, including widths just below and above a transition if you need to see which layout applies on either side.
Menu placement and labels can change between Chrome versions. If you cannot find a control, search the current DevTools documentation for Device Mode rather than assuming the page is running at a real phone’s dimensions.
Automate a set of mobile viewport screenshots with Playwright
Playwright is useful when the same app must be captured at a fixed list of dimensions more than once. Its browser contexts can use device presets or explicit viewport settings; screenshot options let you capture the viewport or the full page. Here is a runnable Node.js example using Playwright’s test runner. Save it as breakpoints.spec.js, install the test runner with npm install --save-dev @playwright/test, and install a browser with npx playwright install chromium. Set APP_URL to the app you can access.

Use the app’s actual transition widths
The sample widths are examples, not recommended universal breakpoints. Replace them with the widths your styles or design specify. For a transition at width B, capture at B - 1 and B (or test the exact media-query condition) to establish which side of the threshold activates. Include a height that makes the relevant content visible, especially for menus, sticky elements, and below-the-fold sections.
Use device emulation when viewport width is not enough
A viewport override controls the available page area, but mobile behavior can also depend on device settings. Playwright supports device presets and settings such as screen size, user agent, and touch behavior. Choose a preset when those properties are part of the test; use explicit dimensions when the main goal is to compare responsive layouts at exact widths. Do not assume a viewport-only capture reproduces all behavior of a specific physical phone.
Choose screenshot scope and scale
A viewport screenshot records what is currently visible; a full-page screenshot extends through the scrollable page. Choose the one that answers the review question, since full-page output can be much taller and may not represent how a real user sees a screen at once. Playwright also supports element screenshots and scale choices. CSS-pixel output follows the page’s CSS dimensions; device-pixel output uses device-pixel ratio and can create larger images. Make captures comparable and trustworthy
- Keep the browser version, operating system, viewport, device settings, app state, and relevant settings consistent when comparing screenshots. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, and other conditions; see its screenshot comparison guidance.
- Use the same page state for each width: authenticate consistently if needed, dismiss or preserve overlays consistently, and wait for relevant content before capture.
- Use full-page capture for page-wide layout checks, but viewport capture for the initial screen or fixed-position elements. These scopes answer different questions.
- When a defect may depend on touch input, mobile browser behavior, or device hardware, repeat the check on a real phone. Chrome’s emulation is an approximation; its documentation points to remote debugging for inspecting a page running on a mobile device.
Troubleshooting responsive screenshots
The layout does not change at the expected width
Confirm that Device Mode is set to Responsive and that you edited the viewport width, not only the height. Check the app’s own media queries and whether the threshold is inclusive or exclusive; a layout can switch at a boundary that differs by one CSS pixel from your assumption. In Playwright, verify the configured viewport and that the page has loaded the stylesheet you expect.
The screenshot is blank or content is missing
Confirm the URL is reachable from the browser or test process and that the app has finished rendering before capture. If the page depends on delayed data or user interaction, wait for a meaningful selector or perform the required action before calling the screenshot method. A network-idle condition may not be appropriate for pages with ongoing network activity.

The image is unexpectedly large or tall
Check whether full-page capture is enabled and whether device-pixel scaling is selected. Use a viewport-only screenshot for the visible area, or CSS-pixel scale when a device-pixel-ratio-sized output is not needed.

Screenshots differ between runs or machines
Check browser and OS versions, fonts, device scale, settings, loaded content, and timing. Keep those conditions fixed for comparisons; otherwise, visual differences may reflect the environment rather than a responsive layout change.

Emulation looks right, but the phone does not
Use a physical device when the issue involves hardware or behavior that desktop emulation cannot reproduce. Remote debugging can help inspect the page while it is running on the phone.
