For rankings that vary across a service area, use a geographic grid as well—the screenshot shows one observed results page, while the grid shows how rankings differ across map points.
Decide what you want to measure
Start with the business location and the service or category searches that matter to customers. Keep the query wording and target geography consistent between runs; otherwise, a change in the result may reflect a changed query or location rather than a ranking shift.
- One location: A single-location rank report gives a position for the selected search location. It is useful for tracking a consistent point, but an average can conceal variation between neighborhoods.
- A service-area view: A grid samples multiple map points around the business or service area. It helps answer where the business appears more or less visible geographically.
BrightLocal distinguishes Local Rank Tracker’s average-position view from Local Search Grid’s neighborhood-level view. Semrush Map Rank Tracker likewise uses a business location, a configured map-pin grid, and a query to report rankings at each pin as a heatmap. A grid and a SERP screenshot are different evidence: neither should be treated as a substitute for the other.
Set up recurring local-pack tracking in BrightLocal
- Choose the business and location. Select the location whose visibility you want to monitor.
- Add the search terms. Use the relevant service or category queries. Keep spelling and phrasing stable across reports so the comparison remains meaningful.
- Choose the sampling method. Use Local Rank Tracker for a selected location’s tracked position. If you need to understand variation around a service area, configure a Local Search Grid instead or alongside it.
- Schedule the report. BrightLocal documents weekly and monthly recurring schedules. Choose the day, run time, and time zone. An ad hoc run is available for a one-time check, but does not recur automatically.
- Allow for queued execution. BrightLocal says Local Rank Tracker and Local Search Grid reports are queued starting at 9 a.m. business-local time by default in the UK, Ireland, USA, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. A user can choose a three-hour execution window, but the exact minute is not guaranteed. Report run times are displayed in UTC. Its product guidance recommends scheduling during the business’s actual hours because results may differ while it is closed.
- Open the screenshot after the report runs. Open the Local Rank Tracker report, scroll to the Rankings Table, hover over the displayed rank, and select the results page to view its SERP screenshot.
- Keep evidence beyond the built-in retention period if needed. BrightLocal’s help documentation says these screenshots are retained for 45 days. Save or export the evidence separately if an audit trail must last longer.
How to compare scheduled screenshots fairly
A screenshot captures the results page associated with a particular report run; it is not a universal record of what every searcher sees. For useful comparisons, preserve the conditions alongside the image:

- Query text and business/location being tracked.
- Target location or grid configuration, including the sampled area.
- Run date, displayed time, and time zone.
- Device setting, if configurable for the report.
- Competitors tracked and any relevant report settings.
Keep the sampling method consistent between periods. Do not compare an individual results-page capture with a heatmap as though they were the same measurement: the image lets you inspect one recorded results page; the grid depicts ranking variation across sampled map points.

The report did not run at the exact selected minute
Local rank reports are queued, and the chosen time can represent a three-hour execution window rather than an exact minute. Check the report’s displayed UTC run time and the configured time zone before concluding that it ran late.

BrightLocal documents 45-day retention for the Local Rank Tracker SERP screenshots. If the report is older, use a separately saved image or report export if you made one; arrange external preservation before the retention window closes for future audit needs.
My neighborhood results differ from the report’s average
This can happen because the average-position report and geographic grid answer different questions. Review a grid when the decision depends on coverage around the service area, and keep its configured map points consistent between scans.

First verify the query, target location or grid, time zone, and any configurable device setting against the prior run. Also note whether the business was open at the time; BrightLocal warns that results may differ while it is closed.
How often should you check local rankings?
Choose weekly or monthly according to how often you need a fresh comparison; BrightLocal documents both recurring intervals. More frequent checks are useful only if you will act on the additional observations. Whatever cadence you choose, preserve the settings and time context with each capture so a later change can be interpreted rather than merely observed.
