To capture a lazy-loaded product image, inspect the collection page in Chrome DevTools, scroll the image into view to trigger loading, then use the Network panel to verify the image request and its URL. The live image element’s currentSrc shows the responsive source selected by the browser; its original src may not be the file that downloaded.
Inspect the rendered product image
- Open the Shopify collection page in Chrome, then open DevTools with
F12orCtrl+Shift+Ion Windows/Linux, orOption+Command+Ion macOS. - In DevTools, open Elements, activate the element picker, and click the product image. Chrome’s Inspect mode highlights the corresponding DOM element and shows its styles in the Styles pane. Chrome DevTools: Inspect mode.
- Read the live
<img>element’ssrc,srcset,sizes,loading, andaltattributes. The rendered DOM may differ from the original HTML if JavaScript changes the element. - With that image selected in Elements, switch to Console and evaluate
$0.currentSrc.$0refers to the currently selected element. This is a quick way to see which responsive candidate the browser selected after layout.
Do not assume the initial src is the downloaded image. A responsive srcset gives the browser candidates to choose from; viewport and layout affect that choice. Shopify explains the role of responsive image markup in its responsive image guidance.
Trigger the lazy load and verify the request
- Open the Network panel before scrolling. If necessary, enable Preserve log so navigation or page activity does not clear the entries.
- Scroll the product card until its image approaches or enters the viewport, then wait for it to appear. Lazy loading normally defers offscreen images until they are near the visible area.
- In Network, filter to Img if available, and inspect the newly appearing image request. Confirm its URL and status. Select the request to review its headers and preview, where available.
- Compare that request URL with
$0.currentSrcand the element’ssrcset. Keep the viewport and scroll position in your notes if you need to reproduce the same selection.
Network records what the browser requested; Elements shows the current markup. Using both distinguishes a declared candidate from the actual image transfer. Shopify also recommends using Chrome DevTools Network to check which image sizes download at different viewports: Shopify theme performance best practices.
Save or document the image
Save the downloaded file
In Network, right-click the successful image request and choose the option to open it in a new tab, then save the image from that tab. If you need to preserve evidence of which resource loaded, record the request URL alongside the viewport and the image element’s srcset and currentSrc.

Capture the visible page
Use Chrome’s screenshot command from the DevTools Command Menu (Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+P on macOS), then search for a screenshot option. A viewport screenshot captures what is visible; it does not by itself prove which image URL was requested. For a full-page capture, first ensure the collection images have loaded by scrolling through the page, then use a full-page screenshot option if available in your Chrome version.
Understand responsive sources and Shopify markup
Shopify recommends its image_url and image_tag filters rather than manually constructing CDN URLs. Its generated markup can provide responsive sources and dimensions. Shopify’s documentation states: “Use srcset and sizes attributes with Shopify’s image_tag Liquid filter to serve appropriately sized images for each viewport.” See Shopify’s image filter guidance and responsive image guidance.

For images using loading="lazy", Shopify recommends sizes: 'auto'. Eager-loaded images need explicit sizes because the browser may choose a source before layout. When troubleshooting, distinguish a below-fold image from an above-fold critical image: Shopify advises against lazy-loading the LCP image, the page’s largest contentful paint candidate. The collection’s section position alone does not tell you whether a particular card is initially visible. See Shopify’s LCP image guidance.
Troubleshoot images that do not load
- The image is blank before scrolling: Scroll it near or into view and wait; lazy loading may not request it while it remains offscreen.
- The element has no useful image URL: Recheck the live DOM after scrolling or interacting with the page. A theme script or app may populate or change image attributes dynamically.
srcdiffers from the downloaded file: Checksrcset,sizes, andcurrentSrc, then confirm the request URL in Network. Responsive selection can produce a different URL than the fallbacksrc.- A request appears but fails: Inspect its status and details in Network. This indicates a request problem rather than merely an image that has not yet been triggered.
- No image request appears after scrolling: Confirm the selected element is the actual image, wait for the page to settle, and inspect whether its attributes change. If the theme uses a script-based loader, its exact behavior depends on the theme and installed apps.
- The screenshot omits images farther down: Scroll through the collection first to trigger offscreen loads, then capture. A full-page screenshot should not be treated as proof that every lazy-loaded image had already been requested.
If the goal is to change the theme’s image-loading implementation rather than capture the current behavior, Shopify’s theme image help is a starting point; changes beyond the theme editor may call for a Shopify Partner.

No. The browser can select another candidate from `srcset` based on layout and viewport; verify the actual request in Network.

Does a full-page screenshot prove every lazy-loaded image was fetched?
No. Scroll through the collection to trigger offscreen images, and use Network if you need to confirm which requests occurred.
