To capture an Indian-language website correctly with Puppeteer, make sure the browser environment has fonts that cover the page’s scripts, let the page finish rendering before taking the screenshot, and check that the document uses suitable encoding and language metadata. Configure the browser locale only when the page depends on locale-sensitive behavior: locale settings do not install fonts or fix missing glyphs.
What determines whether Indian-language text renders correctly?
Puppeteer takes a screenshot of what its browser renders; it does not repair text or supply fonts. A page may therefore load successfully yet show boxes, missing characters, or inconsistent typography if Chrome cannot find a font with the necessary glyphs. Rendering can also vary across operating systems, browser environments, viewport sizes, and resolutions.
Keep these separate when diagnosing a bad image:
- Font coverage and availability: The deployed browser needs an installed or page-provided font that covers the script in the text.
- Document metadata: The page should use UTF-8 where appropriate and accurate language attributes.
- Locale behavior: Locale can affect language negotiation and formatting APIs, but does not add glyphs to a font.
- Capture timing and viewport: The screenshot should follow content and style rendering at the viewport and resolution you intend to use.
Prepare Puppeteer and capture the page
The following Node.js example uses Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() API to save a PNG after navigation. Replace the URL and viewport with the target page and intended output dimensions. The API documentation identifies this method as capturing a screenshot of the page; the documentation page is labeled version 25.12.0.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
// In a container, use a Chrome/Puppeteer setup supported by your environment.
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Puppeteer Page.screenshot() API
networkidle0 is one possible navigation wait condition, not proof that every page-specific font, animation, or delayed element is ready. If the site continues loading resources or renders content later, wait for the relevant element or use a deliberate delay based on the page’s behavior before capturing. Avoid treating an arbitrary wait as a substitute for checking the result.

Make the browser’s fonts cover the target scripts
First identify which scripts the page actually uses, then ensure those fonts are available in the runtime that launches Chrome. The Puppeteer troubleshooting guide treats fonts and other system dependencies as part of running Chrome in containers and gives example font packages for several major character sets. Those examples are not a complete package list for every Indian language or script, so select fonts based on the page and validate them in the deployed environment.
For consistent typography across machines, a site can provide embedded fonts. The Universal Acceptance Steering Group’s 2022 India Roadmap recommends UTF-8, language attributes, embedded fonts for uniform display, and locale-specific CSS handling. Its guidance is not a current browser-support certification, so verify the output in the browsers and platforms you actually use.

Check encoding, language metadata, and locale separately
Encoding and language attributes
Inspect the page’s document encoding and language metadata if text is garbled or handled incorrectly. Prefer UTF-8 and accurate lang attributes for the content. Metadata helps browsers and assistive technologies interpret language; it cannot compensate for an unavailable font.
Locale emulation
Set a locale only if the page relies on language negotiation, number or date formatting, or other locale-sensitive behavior. A third-party Puppeteer guide describes using Chrome’s Emulation.setLocaleOverride before page navigation, and separately distinguishes request language, navigator language values, Intl locale, and timezone. Check that guidance against the Puppeteer and browser versions installed in your project; it is not a guarantee that one setting controls every language-related behavior.

Even when locale emulation works as intended, it does not establish that Chrome has a font with the required glyphs. Diagnose font coverage and locale behavior as different issues.
Validate the screenshot in the production environment
- Set the intended viewport. Choose dimensions and device scale that match the use case; text can look different on a low-resolution mobile screen than on a desktop-sized capture.
- Confirm the page is ready. Make sure the target content and its styles have loaded before capturing, especially if the page renders content asynchronously.
- Inspect text and computed fonts. If characters appear as boxes or use unexpected typography, inspect the affected element’s computed font family and the browser’s network or runtime behavior.
- Check the deployed font environment. Verify that the fonts covering the target script are available to the Chrome process that Puppeteer actually launches.
- Compare representative pages and scripts. Test the languages, viewport sizes, resolutions, and runtime conditions relevant to production. Do not describe screenshots as verified unless they have been inspected or tested.
The India Roadmap notes that display can vary across browsers and platforms and that some fonts and scripts may not render well on low-resolution mobile screens. It recommends an alternate approach for those cases but does not specify a universal fix. Use the intended device dimensions when validating; a desktop capture alone does not establish how a mobile screenshot will look.

Account for container and runtime issues
Font configuration is only one part of running Chrome in a container. The Puppeteer troubleshooting guide says Chrome needs writable profile, configuration, and cache locations in read-only containers, and warns that Chrome is not supported on Alpine out of the box. If launching or rendering fails in a container, check those runtime constraints as well as font availability. The guide’s examples do not establish one universal Indian-language font package or guarantee rendering across all container images.
Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Characters appear as empty boxes or missing glyphs | Font coverage or availability in the Chrome runtime | Identify the script, provide a font that covers it, and verify that the deployed browser can access it. Do not expect locale emulation to add glyphs. |
| Text appears garbled or language handling is wrong | Document encoding or language metadata | Check for UTF-8 and accurate lang attributes. Confirm whether the site depends on language negotiation. |
| Dates, numbers, or language-sensitive content differ from expectations | Locale-related browser behavior | Determine whether request language, navigator values, Intl, or timezone matters to the page; configure and validate the needed behavior separately from fonts. |
| Fonts or page elements are missing in the image but appear later | Capture timing or delayed resource loading | Wait for the relevant content or font-related behavior before calling page.screenshot(); a generic navigation event may not match the site’s rendering pattern. |
| Text looks poor only at a small viewport or low resolution | Viewport and output scale | Test the actual target dimensions and device scale. The 2022 India Roadmap notes this can affect script rendering on mobile screens. |
| Chrome fails to start or cannot write its profile in a container | Container system dependencies or writable paths | Follow the current Puppeteer troubleshooting guidance for system dependencies and writable profile, configuration, and cache locations; do not assume Alpine has out-of-the-box Chrome support. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting Puppeteer’s locale fix missing Indian-language characters?
No. Locale can affect locale-sensitive browser behavior, but missing glyphs require a font that covers the script and is available to Chrome.
Is there one font package that covers every Indian language?
The cited guidance does not establish a universal font package. Choose fonts for the scripts on the page and validate them in the deployed browser environment.
