For a page behind authentication, or a workflow that needs clicks or navigation, use a persistent browser session and take the screenshot after completing those steps. A screenshot API renders a web page; it does not connect your application to GSTN’s production APIs.
Choose the right capture method

Capture documents both single-request screenshots and browser sessions, including navigation, clicks, typing, scrolling, waiting, and screenshots in a persistent browser. Its API overview is at https://capture.io/docs/api. Cloudflare also cautions that JavaScript-heavy pages may be incomplete if captured before they finish rendering: https://developers.cloudflare.com/browser-rendering/screenshot/.
Capture a public GST portal page
- Confirm the URL is publicly reachable. Open it without signing in and check whether the content you need appears. If reaching it requires credentials or a sequence of actions, move to a persistent browser session rather than expecting a stateless request to log in.
- Choose the capture area. Use a viewport screenshot for the visible screen, a full-page capture for a longer page, or an element capture if you need only a specific region. Capture’s API overview documents these capture options.
- Wait for the content you need. For pages that render asynchronously, use an appropriate readiness condition, such as waiting for a relevant selector or stable page state. A browser’s initial load event may happen before a JavaScript-heavy page has finished rendering.
- Inspect the output. Check that the page content, timestamps, and other details needed for your record are visible and complete. If content is missing, adjust the wait condition and capture again.
- Keep the image with your support record. The GST Self Service Portal accepts screenshots of pages where users encountered an issue as complaint evidence: https://selfservice.gstsystem.in/. A normal browser screenshot may be enough for an individual complaint; an API is not required just to attach an image.
When login or interaction is required
A URL-to-image request is not a substitute for signing in or carrying out a multi-step page workflow. Use a persistent browser session when the required capture depends on an authenticated state, a click, a form entry, or navigation. The documented Capture session flow supports those actions and taking a screenshot in the same browser session.
Do not assume a third-party service can access every protected page or pass a CAPTCHA or other access control. Whether a specific GST page is accessible or an automation flow is permitted depends on that page and its controls; the cited product documentation does not establish GST-specific success or permission.

A screenshot API is not a GSTN API
The word “API” refers to two different things here. A screenshot API opens a web page in a browser and returns a visual capture. GSTN production API integration is a system-to-system connection for applications in the GST ecosystem.
GSTN says its GSP-developed applications connect to the GST System through secure APIs. Its GSP ecosystem information states that production API endpoints can only be consumed via MPLS lines and says, “The GST System will not be available over the Internet for security reasons.” See https://www.gstn.org.in/gsp-ecosystem and https://www.gstn.org.in/. Check current official GSTN documentation before implementing an integration, because connectivity and access requirements can change.

If your need is a visual record of a page, use browser capture. If your need is to exchange compliance data with the GST System, investigate the documented GSP/API route and its connectivity requirements instead.

Troubleshooting incomplete or unsuitable captures
- The output is blank or missing dynamic content: The page may not have finished rendering when the capture ran. Add a wait for the relevant content or a stable page state, then inspect the result. JavaScript-heavy pages can be incomplete if captured too early.
- The URL redirects to a sign-in page: A single-request capture cannot supply an authenticated state merely from the URL. Use a persistent browser session for workflows that require login and interaction.
- The screenshot shows only part of a long page: Select full-page capture instead of a viewport capture, or capture a specific element if only one section is needed.
- The capture does not establish GST API access: Browser screenshots and GSTN production API integration are separate. For system integration, follow GSTN’s GSP/API documentation and connectivity conditions.
- A protected flow is blocked: Do not assume a screenshot provider will bypass access controls. The available documentation does not guarantee access to protected GST pages or CAPTCHA handling.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
There is no GST-specific reliability ranking or comparative performance study established for these capture methods. Treat the output as something to verify, especially when a page renders asynchronously or its content matters as evidence. The sources do not establish a success rate, capture speed, or availability guarantee for particular GST pages.
Choose based on the work involved: a public page and a single visual record suit a one-request capture; authenticated or multi-step work needs browser state; system-to-system data exchange needs the GSTN integration path. For an individual support complaint, an ordinary browser screenshot may avoid setting up an API at all.

Can I take a screenshot of a GST portal issue for a complaint?
Yes. The GST Self Service Portal accepts screenshots as complaint evidence. An API is optional; a browser screenshot may be sufficient.
