If the GST portal or your IRP offers a PDF download for the invoice, use that first: it gives you the portal’s invoice document directly. HTML/CSS to Image can instead render a publicly accessible webpage as a PDF, but its documented URL-capture feature does not establish that it can open an invoice behind a GST taxpayer login or reuse your browser session.
Choose the right way to get the invoice

A rendered webpage PDF is not necessarily the same document as an invoice PDF issued by the portal. If you need the invoice record itself, check the portal’s download or print workflow before using a screenshot service.

The GST tutorial’s e-Invoice JSON Download manual describes searching e-invoice records and using the download action to obtain a PDF. It also describes JSON download as another output option. Follow the portal’s current on-screen instructions for the record you need: GST e-Invoice JSON Download manual.
IRIS IRP workflow
For IRIS IRP specifically, the documented path is Manage > View Invoices. Use Print to generate the invoice PDF, then download it when processing succeeds. IRIS says its default view covers invoices with acknowledgement dates in the prior two days; older records may require its VAS or VAS Premium service. This availability rule is specific to IRIS IRP, not a rule for every IRP. See the IRIS IRP viewing and download guide.

Do not confuse an invoice PDF with a GSTR-1 spreadsheet
The GST portal’s GSTR-1 guide concerns downloading e-invoice details auto-populated into the return as an Excel file, including download history for larger record sets. That is a return-preparation spreadsheet workflow, not an individual invoice PDF download: GST GSTR-1 user guide.
What HTML/CSS to Image can capture
HTML/CSS to Image documents a URL-to-image endpoint that can also return PDF output. Its create-image endpoint is POST https://hcti.io/v1/image. A request can provide either url or html, not both; when a URL is supplied, it takes precedence over HTML. CSS can be supplied to style a URL capture. The URL should be a fully qualified, publicly accessible webpage address. See the vendor’s API usage documentation and URL-to-image documentation.
The documented feature is not proof of authenticated browsing. The reviewed documentation does not promise that the service can enter a private GST account, use an existing browser login, or capture a taxpayer-only page. Do not put GST login credentials or the API key into a public webpage or client-side application.

Capture a public webpage as a PDF
The example below is illustrative, not a tested GST portal request. It uses a public demo URL and reads the API ID and API key from environment variables. HTML/CSS to Image uses HTTP Basic authentication: API ID as the username, API key as the password. Keep both values on a trusted server and treat the key like a password.
- Get API credentials for HTML/CSS to Image, then configure them as server-side environment variables named
HCTI_API_IDandHCTI_API_KEY. - Submit a URL capture request to
POST https://hcti.io/v1/image, specifyingformat: "pdf". - Retrieve the generated file from the output URL returned by the API. The API’s output URL is the artifact location; save its contents as a PDF.
- Check the PDF against the portal record before relying on it. Confirm the invoice identity, legibility, visible details, and page count.
Node.js example
This example requires Node.js with built-in fetch support and a server-side environment where the credentials are set. It submits the request and downloads the PDF returned through the API response’s url field.

Check the file before using it
- Open the PDF and verify the GST invoice number, supplier or recipient details, and other identifiers against the portal record.
- Check that text, totals, dates, and any QR code or other visible information are legible and not clipped.
- Compare the number of pages and visible content with the portal view. A PDF rendered from a webpage can differ from the portal’s own invoice document.
- If the page requires login, use the portal’s own download route rather than assuming a public-URL capture can access the authenticated page.
Troubleshooting
The request is rejected or returns an authentication error
Check that the request uses HTTP Basic authentication with the API ID as username and API key as password. Confirm that both environment variables are present on the server. Do not expose the key in browser code or a public page.
The API cannot load the GST invoice page
The documented URL capture flow is for a public webpage. It does not establish support for taxpayer login sessions. Retrieve the invoice through the GST portal or IRP instead of sending GST account credentials to an undocumented workflow.

Check that the request specifies format as pdf, then use the returned artifact URL to download the generated file. The API also supports image formats, so omitting or changing the format can produce a different output.

The file is missing page content or appears clipped
Inspect the original page and the rendered result. Full-page capture is documented, but the exact behavior on a particular GST portal page is not established. If the portal provides a direct PDF, use that document for the invoice rather than relying on a webpage rendering.
An older invoice is absent in IRIS IRP
IRIS IRP documents a default view covering acknowledgement dates in the prior two days; older records may depend on VAS or VAS Premium. Check that IRIS-specific service condition or use the relevant portal’s own route for your record.
