To capture an existing GST invoice webpage as a PDF, send its URL to a screenshot API that supports PDF output, choose how it should handle screen or print styling and page fit, wait for the invoice to render, and inspect the resulting PDF for missing or unreadable content. This saves a visual copy; it does not create, validate, or legally authenticate an invoice.
What a screenshot API does—and does not do
A screenshot API opens a webpage in a rendering environment and returns a file. For this workflow, use one that can return PDF output directly. The result reflects what the page displayed at capture time; it is not evidence that the invoice particulars are accurate or that the invoice complies with GST rules.
Under CBIC’s Central Goods and Services Tax Rules, 2017, Rule 46, a tax invoice includes particulars such as the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN, a financial-year-unique serial number, issue date, applicable recipient details, description and value of goods or services, and tax particulars. Use these as a visual review checklist, not as a substitute for accounting or legal review.
For notified classes of registered persons, Rule 48(4) sets out preparation using particulars in FORM GST INV-01 and obtaining an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) through the common portal. Rule 48(5) says an invoice issued by a person subject to that sub-rule in another manner is not treated as an invoice. A screenshot API does not register an invoice or issue an IRN. The IRIS IRP guidance describes the e-invoice sequence as reporting invoice details, receiving an IRN, then generating a PDF, printing, or forwarding the invoice.

Capture an invoice webpage as a PDF
1. Confirm you can access the invoice
Open the invoice using the authorized account and access context needed to view it. Screenshot APIs typically navigate to a URL, but support for a particular login flow, session, or authentication method depends on the provider and its configuration. Do not submit credentials or capture pages you are not authorized to access.
2. Choose PDF output and page behavior
Set the API’s output format to PDF. Decide whether the document should follow screen styling or print styling, whether background graphics should be included, and whether the page should be fitted to a single sheet. A one-page fit can make a dense invoice difficult to read; it is not automatically the best choice.

3. Allow the page to finish rendering
Invoice data, logos, fonts, QR codes, or other assets may load after the initial page response. Configure the provider’s documented wait condition, delay, and timeout for the page. A full-page option can help with long pages, but it does not guarantee that every dynamic invoice will render completely. Open the returned file and check the invoice number and date, supplier and recipient fields, line items, tax amounts, totals, and every page. If the webpage displays an IRN or QR code, check that it appears in the PDF and remains legible. This is a review of the captured appearance; an API’s successful response does not validate the invoice’s contents.
5. Store it under your organization’s policies
Apply your own access controls, retention rules, and privacy policies to the PDF and to any data sent to the capture provider. The cited material does not establish a universal retention period or storage method for GST invoice records.

- The API cannot open the invoice: Confirm the URL is reachable from the capture service and that the required authorized access method is supported. If the invoice only appears after a specific login flow, verify the provider’s documented authentication support rather than assuming a browser session transfers.
- The PDF is blank or missing invoice details: The page may need more time to load data or assets. Adjust the documented wait condition or delay and timeout, then inspect a new PDF. A blank or failed capture should not be treated as an invoice copy.
- Content is clipped or split awkwardly: Try full-page capture or adjust PDF page size and layout. Check whether screen or print media styling better matches the intended output; avoid one-page fit if it makes text unreadable.
- Background colors or graphics are absent: Check whether the PDF settings include print backgrounds, or use screen media styling if that is the desired appearance. The relevant option names vary by provider.
- A QR code or lazy-loaded section is missing: Wait for rendering and use documented full-page or scrolling behavior where available. Verify the result visually; the documentation does not promise perfect rendering for all dynamic pages.
PDF capture is not invoice validation
Keep the distinction clear in automated workflows: the screenshot step archives a rendered page, while GST invoice creation and e-invoice reporting are separate processes. For notified taxpayers subject to Rule 48(4), the IRN process precedes PDF generation in the IRIS IRP guidance. A captured document should therefore be treated as a visual record of the webpage, not as confirmation that an invoice has been properly issued.
