To capture a Google results page with paid and organic listings clear, take a screenshot of the live results and preserve Google’s own sponsorship labels. For a report, add any “Ad” or “Organic” callouts as separate annotations; do not alter or obscure the original page. If you are checking your own campaign rather than documenting a live search, use Google Ads’ Ad preview and diagnosis tool instead.
Choose a live screenshot or an ad preview
Documenting the results page
Use a normal browser or device screenshot when you need a record of what appeared on a particular Google Search page. Search the exact query you want to document, then capture the visible viewport. If results continue below the fold and the whole page matters, use a browser full-page capture option or an extension; inspect the output for missing, duplicated, or stitched sections.
Checking your own campaign
In Google Ads, open Tools / Troubleshooting and choose Ad preview and diagnosis. Google recommends this over searching for your ad directly: it lets you inspect appearance and diagnose why an ad may not show without affecting impression data. Its results can change over time and may not reflect every instance of campaign activity. Google Ads Help: Ad preview and diagnosis.

How to capture and label a Google SERP
- Set the scope. Decide whether you need only the first visible screen or a full-page record. For comparisons, use the same query and capture method each time.
- Search the intended query and market. Use the relevant locale and language, and note whether you were signed in. Search results may vary with context, device, and time.
- Capture the page. Use your operating system’s screenshot command or browser capture feature for the visible area. For a full-page image, use a browser’s full-page capture option or an extension, then check for stitching artifacts and content that loaded late.
- Keep sponsorship labels visible. Identify ads using Google’s displayed labels, not position or appearance alone. Google announced a grouped “Sponsored results” label for text ads and “Sponsored” labels on other ad units, including Shopping ads; the presentation can vary by market, device, and rollout.
- Add explanatory labels only as annotations. If readers need explicit “Ad” and “Organic” callouts, place them beside the relevant results or in a legend. Do not cover Google’s sponsorship label or modify the results themselves. Keep the untouched capture as the source record.
- Caption the image. Include the query, market or locale, language, device or viewport, date and time, sign-in state if relevant, and scroll position. These details help explain differences between captures but cannot make results identical for everyone.
Google’s October 13, 2025 announcement described the text-ad label as a single “Sponsored results” label and said other ad units, such as Shopping ads, also use “Sponsored.” Check the actual captured page rather than assuming every market or device shows an identical layout. Full-page capture and annotation options
A visible-viewport screenshot is usually the simplest choice for a one-off record. A full-page capture can be useful for long results pages, while an annotation tool can help explain page features. For example, the Chrome Web Store descriptions for SERPshot describe stitched Google and Bing screenshots with result parsing; SERP Feature Annotator describes colored overlays for ads, organic results, and other features. These are vendor descriptions, not independent evaluations. Publishing or sharing Search screenshots
Google’s Search screenshot guidance says not to alter the interface or manufacture, remove, or alter autocomplete terms or search results. Keep explanatory annotations distinct from the underlying screenshot, and check applicable third-party permissions for content shown. Google says permission is not needed to use Search screenshots in print for educational or instructional purposes, but its guidance restricts some print uses, requires Google approval for Search in advertisements, and asks for a trademark tagline beneath images featuring Search. Requirements depend on the medium and use, so consult the specific guidance before publication. Google Search screenshot guidelines.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one API request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a public Google results URL, pass that URL to the API. The API requires an access key; keep it private and replace the example URL with the exact results-page URL you intend to capture.

Does a result’s position at the top prove it is an ad?
