If the time must appear inside the image, add a clearly labeled annotation after capture. A filename timestamp and a visible stamp are different, and neither should be presented as tamper-proof proof of when a screenshot was made.
Choose how the timestamp should appear

Keep an unmodified original when possible. A timestamp added to an image is an annotation, not independent verification of when the image was captured.
Capture Google results on Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open Google, enter the query, and wait for the results you want to document.
- Arrange the page so the query and relevant results are legible. Keep browser or other context in view if it matters to your record.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Choose the capture area, window, or full screen and take the snip.
- Open or select the capture in Snipping Tool and save it. Microsoft documents Ctrl + S as a save shortcut.
- Record the capture date, time, and time zone separately if the file name does not provide the record you need. Add a visible annotation only if the image itself must display the timestamp.
Microsoft documents the capture modes and saving workflow, but does not document a guaranteed timestamp overlay in the captured image. Microsoft Support: Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.
Capture Google results on a Mac
- Open Google and run the search you want to record.
- Use the Screenshot app or a supported screenshot keyboard shortcut to capture the relevant area or screen.
- Keep the default saved filename if you want its date and time association. Apple says that screenshots save to the desktop by default with a name containing the date and time.
- If viewers need to see the time without inspecting the file name, add a clearly labeled annotation to a copy and retain the original.

Make the screenshot useful to someone else
A Google results screenshot documents one search session, not a permanent or universal ranking. Google says results may differ with time and context, including location, language, device, recent searches, and personalization. Newly available content can also change results within minutes or hours. Google Search Help puts it plainly: “Time may be one of the biggest reasons why results vary between people.” Google Search Help: Why your Google Search results differ from others; see also Learn search tips & how results relate to your search on Google.
- Write down the exact query as entered.
- Record the capture date and time, including the time zone.
- Note relevant context such as country or region, language, device, and whether personalization may have been active.
- Choose a crop that keeps the query and results legible. A wider capture can retain browser or clock context; a tighter crop is easier to read but may omit useful context.
- Keep the original file separate from any annotated or cropped copy.
These details help another person understand the capture and attempt a similar search; they cannot guarantee an identical results page.

Common problems and fixes
- The date or time is not visible in the image: A saved filename is not an on-image stamp. Add a labeled annotation to a copy or include a visible clock in the screen area before capturing.
- The screenshot filename does not make the time clear: Record the capture time and time zone separately. On Mac, keep the default filename if its date-and-time association is useful.
- The search results differ when repeated: Record the query and relevant context, including time zone, location or region, language, and device. Google results can change with time and personalization, so an exact match is not assured.
- The capture is too cropped to interpret: Retake it with the query and enough surrounding browser or page context to identify what was searched.
- You need a record others can trust: Preserve the original and identify any annotation as device-recorded. The documented screenshot and filename behavior does not establish forensic authentication or prove the capture time.
