To capture Google Maps results for a local SEO audit, open the exact query at the location you want to assess, wait for the map and listings to load, then save a screenshot that shows enough context to identify what you searched and where. Record the query, location, date and time, device or browser, and whether you captured Google Maps or a Google Search local pack. A screenshot documents one visible result set in one context at one time; it does not establish a universal or permanent ranking.
Decide what result surface you are auditing
Google Maps results and the local pack shown on a Google Search results page are different surfaces. Identify which one is in your audit notes and keep the capture consistent with that choice. The distinction matters when someone later tries to reproduce or interpret the observation.
Google explains that local results are shaped primarily by relevance, distance, and prominence. Because distance is part of the picture, an audit needs a search location or point as well as the query. Google’s Places API policy provides this explanation in its discussion of local results.
Capture and document the result
- Set the conditions. Write down the exact search query and intended location or search point. If the audit compares multiple areas, treat each area as a separate observation.
- Open the right surface. Search in Google Maps or Google Search, according to the audit plan. Note which one you used.
- Wait for the visible results to settle. Keep enough of the screen in frame to show the search context and the listing or map area being discussed. Do not edit the image in a way that misrepresents the interface or results.
- Capture the screen. Use the built-in tool for your operating system, described below.
- Save the original and log the context. A practical filename is
query-city-2026-10-03.png. Add a note with the query, location, date and time, device or browser, and whether the image shows Maps or Search. This naming convention is useful recordkeeping, not a Google requirement.

Make repeated audits more comparable
For a time series, repeat the same query and location conditions as closely as possible, save each dated image, and compare observations rather than treating any single capture as a fixed rank. If you need observations across many search points, a local rank-tracking service may be more practical than manually repeating the process. Before relying on one, check how it defines location, what result view it records, how it retains dated observations, and its cost and data-handling terms. BrightLocal’s help page, for example, describes how to access Local Pack search results from a Google Business Profile Audit report; that description alone does not establish independent accuracy. What a screenshot can—and cannot—show
A screenshot is evidence of what was visible under recorded conditions, not proof that a business holds the same position for every searcher or location. Google identifies relevance, distance, and prominence as primary factors in local results. If you are an owner, a verified Business Profile lets you manage details such as address, contact information, business type, and photos that may appear in Search and Maps; it does not promise a particular ranking. Policy and reuse limits
Keep policy claims within the scope of the document cited. Google’s Maps JavaScript API policy says that capturing or persisting a Place Name for use outside the user session constitutes scraping under that policy. This is API-specific language; it is not a definitive statement that every manual screenshot made in the consumer Maps interface is prohibited. See Google Maps JavaScript API policies.

Google’s Search screenshot guidance says screenshots of Google Search pages and results used in print for educational or instructional purposes do not require permission, while noting that third-party content may require approval and promotional use has additional constraints. For a programmatic screenshot of a public page, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a Google Maps search URL; replace the URL with the exact Maps results URL you need to capture. The API returns a screenshot of the page—it does not itself certify that results are comparable across locations or sessions.
