Use Playwright’s fullPage: true option to capture the entire scrollable page rather than just the visible browser viewport. Save the result as an image for documentation, or use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertions when you need visual regression checks.
Choose the right capture method
- Playwright page API: Best for repeatable screenshots inside browser automation scripts. Set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. Playwright’s Screenshots guide describes this as a screenshot as if the page were displayed on a very tall screen. - Playwright Test screenshot assertions: Use
toHaveScreenshot()to compare the rendered page with a stored expectation. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before saving or comparing the final image. See Playwright’s visual comparison documentation. - Playwright CLI: Use the command-line screenshot interface for a quick capture without writing a test. Its options include full-page capture, output filename, PNG/JPEG/WebP formats, and a high-resolution mode that captures device pixels rather than CSS pixels. See the CLI reference.
- Chrome DevTools Protocol: Use its Page-domain screenshot command when building lower-level browser integrations or needing protocol-level control, including capture of a specified region. It is a protocol API, not a documented DevTools menu workflow. See the Page domain reference.
If you only need a component, capture that element instead of producing a very tall full-page image. Playwright’s page API supports element screenshots as well as page screenshots.
Capture a full page with Playwright
In a JavaScript Playwright script, navigate to the intended app state and call page.screenshot() with fullPage: true. The following complete example launches Chromium, opens a page, takes a full-page screenshot, and closes the browser:

A normal page screenshot captures the current viewport; fullPage: true requests the full scrollable page. The screenshot API can also return image bytes rather than writing a file, allowing a script to pass the result to other processing. Consult the Page API reference for the current options and language bindings.
Make the captured page representative
Wait for the state your test or document needs
Navigate to the route and state that should appear in the artifact. If content loads after navigation, wait for an app-specific readiness condition before capture—for example, a known heading or results container becoming visible. A fixed delay may be appropriate for a known animation, but it is not a universal substitute for checking that the required content is ready.
Full-page capture does not itself guarantee that every app has finished rendering or that content loaded only after scrolling has appeared. Review the resulting image, especially on pages with lazy-loaded images, expanding sections, animations, or content that changes after interaction. There is no universal page-height limit established by the cited Playwright documentation.
Mask sensitive or unstable areas
When a screenshot could contain personal or changing data, Playwright’s screenshot API supports a mask option for selected locators. The masked regions are visibly covered in the saved image; masking is not a way to preserve the underlying pixels while hiding them from someone who receives the screenshot.

Keep visual regression runs consistent
For comparisons, generate the baseline and subsequent captures under controlled rendering conditions. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Pin and reuse the relevant environment where practical, and investigate environmental changes before treating every pixel difference as an app regression.
Use Playwright Test for visual regression
When the goal is to detect visual changes rather than merely save a reference image, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion. It waits for consecutive page screenshots to match, then compares or saves the resulting screenshot expectation. This helps avoid recording a transient frame, but it does not remove the need to control rendering conditions or decide which differences are meaningful.
For a full-page assertion, call the assertion with the full-page option supported by the screenshot assertion API, and use the same route, app state, browser configuration, and test data when creating and checking the expectation. Capture from the command line or protocol
Playwright CLI
The Playwright CLI screenshot command supports a full-page flag and filename selection, along with PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. It also documents a high-resolution option that captures device pixels instead of CSS pixels. Check the CLI reference for the installed version’s command syntax and flags rather than assuming options from another Playwright interface are identical.

Troubleshooting full-page captures
The image contains only the visible viewport
Confirm the script calls page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true }). Without fullPage: true, a page screenshot is limited to the current viewport.
Content is missing below the fold
Wait for the app’s relevant content to load before capture. If the app loads content in response to scrolling, make sure that behavior has occurred before taking the screenshot, then inspect the artifact. A full-page request does not establish that every app’s lazy-loading logic has run.
Images or text differ between runs
Check for changes in operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode. Also confirm that the app data and state are the same. These are known sources of rendering variation noted by Playwright’s visual comparison documentation.
The screenshot includes private or unpredictable content
Use the screenshot API’s mask option with locators for the regions to cover, or capture only the relevant element. Inspect the generated image to verify that the intended regions are covered before sharing it.

The output is too tall or hard to review
Capture the specific element that matters, or split documentation into focused captures. Full-page mode is intended to include the scrollable page; it does not make an exceptionally tall image easier to inspect or guarantee a universal maximum size.
