Use Playwright’s fullPage: true option to save the entire scrollable page after reproducing the error. Then attach the image with the route, reproduction steps, environment, and exact error text; screenshots show pixels, not the runtime stack or request history.
Capture the full page with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot API can capture the page’s full scrollable area rather than only the visible viewport. In a project with Playwright Test installed, add a test such as this and change the URL to the route that displays the error:

The capture call is await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/error-page.png', fullPage: true });; see Playwright’s screenshot documentation for the API. Playwright can also return screenshot bytes for further processing or upload instead of writing directly to a file. If the relevant error is confined to a component, you can capture that locator; choose a full-page shot when surrounding page context matters.
Capture the error state that actually occurred
First reproduce the problem and wait until the relevant error UI is visible, then take the screenshot. In Next.js, the image can differ depending on the error and runtime:

App Router rendering errors
For uncaught exceptions during rendering, App Router error boundaries display fallback UI. A route segment can provide that fallback in an error.js file; if a nearer boundary does not handle the error, it bubbles to a parent boundary. Error boundaries do not catch errors in event handlers, which need explicit handling. See the Next.js App Router error-handling guide, last updated March 25, 2026.
Development overlay and production fallback
Next.js documents a development runtime error overlay for apps run with next dev, and says that overlay is not shown in production. A development overlay and a production fallback page are different visible states, so capture the environment where the reported bug occurs and label it in the report. The specific overlay guidance comes from the Next.js Pages Router error-handling guide; check the documentation for your installed Next.js version if this distinction is central to a version-specific report.

Make the screenshot useful in a bug report
After saving the image, open it and verify the error text and surrounding context are legible. Include these details alongside it:
- The affected route or URL.
- Concise steps that reproduce the issue.
- Whether the capture came from development or production.
- The exact visible error text.
- Relevant console or server-log details, attached separately when available.
A screenshot records pixels; it does not contain the runtime stack or request history. Before sharing the image, inspect it for credentials, tokens, personal data, or internal information and redact anything sensitive.

Troubleshoot missing or misleading captures
- The image shows only the viewport: Confirm the call includes
fullPage: true. Without it, the capture is not configured to include the full scrollable page. - The error UI is absent: Make sure the route actually reproduces the issue and wait until the relevant UI is visible before capturing. A rendering exception may show a boundary fallback rather than the development overlay.
- The screenshot does not match the reported environment: Check whether the app was run with
next devor in production. The development overlay is not shown in production according to the cited Next.js guidance. - The report lacks enough diagnostic detail: Add the route, reproduction steps, environment and exact visible text. Include relevant logs separately; the image cannot supply them.
