Use Safari’s Web Inspector. Open the page, enable Safari’s developer features, select the top-level html element, and choose Capture Screenshot. Safari saves the entire rendered page as one tall image. Scroll through the page first so lazy-loaded images have a chance to appear. The standard Mac screenshot shortcut captures the display, a window, or a selected area—not a complete scrolling webpage.
What you need before capturing
This method is built into Safari on macOS, but the setting names differ slightly by Safari version. Safari calls its configuration screen Settings in current releases and Preferences in older ones.
Enable the Develop menu
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings (or Safari > Preferences).
- Open the Advanced panel.
- Turn on the option that shows developer features. Depending on your version, it may be labeled Show features for web developers or Show Develop menu in menu bar.
- Close Settings. A Develop menu should now appear in Safari’s menu bar.
Prepare pages that load content while you scroll
Many sites defer image loading until an image is close to the visible viewport. Scroll from the top to the bottom of the page, pausing long enough for images and embedded sections to finish loading, then return to the top. Capturing before this pass can leave lower images missing. Dynamic pages, advertising slots, embedded media, and site-specific scripts can still produce a result that differs from what you see during normal browsing.
Capture the entire webpage as one image
- Open the page you want to capture in Safari.
- Scroll through the complete page as described above, then return to the top.
- Choose Develop > Show Web Inspector.
- In the inspector’s Elements view, locate the first, top-level
htmlelement. Do not select a nesteddivor a component inside the page. - Right-click the top-level
htmlelement and choose Capture Screenshot. - Choose a filename and location when Safari asks where to save the image.
The inspector layout and wording can move between Safari releases, but the important sequence is the same: open Web Inspector, select the document’s top-level html node, and invoke Capture Screenshot from its context menu.

What the capture contains
The result is a page image rather than a picture of your Mac’s desktop. Browser chrome, other windows, and the Web Inspector itself are not the target; Safari is rendering the webpage into a tall image. Because the page is captured as it is rendered, content controlled by scripts or embedded services may not be identical on every attempt.
Why Shift-Command-5 is not enough
Pressing Shift-Command-5 opens macOS’s Screenshot app. Apple’s “Take a screenshot on Mac” guide describes captures of the entire screen, a window or menu, and a selected portion of the screen. Those modes are useful for what is currently visible, but they do not automatically scroll through a long Safari page and stitch the off-screen sections into one image. Use Web Inspector when the requirement is a single, full-height webpage image.

Choose the format that matches the job
A tall image, a PDF and a saved webpage are different deliverables. Pick the one that matches how the result will be read or reused.

Safari’s Share button and File > Share menu are useful when the recipient needs a link or document rather than an image. Choose Web Inspector for a tall image, PDF for a portable document, and Web Archive for a locally stored webpage package.

Troubleshooting Safari full-page captures
Images near the bottom are blank
Return to the page, scroll all the way down, and wait for each section to populate before returning to the top and repeating the capture. This addresses the common lazy-loading behavior described in the Safari workflow. If an image is supplied by a script or an external embed, the site may still leave it unavailable during capture.
The Develop menu is missing
Open Safari’s Settings (or Preferences), select Advanced, and enable the developer-features option. If you enabled it but do not see the menu, close and reopen Safari, then check the Advanced panel again; the exact label depends on the release.

“Capture Screenshot” does not appear
Make sure Web Inspector is open and that you right-clicked the document’s first, top-level html element in the Elements view. A nested element can expose different context-menu commands. Safari’s inspector interface changes over time, so check that you are in Elements rather than a console or resource panel.
The page changes while it is being captured
Live feeds, rotating banners, embedded media and other dynamic components can update between the initial scroll and the capture. Record the page at a stable point, dismiss anything that obscures the content, and be prepared to repeat the capture if the page changes. There is no universal guarantee that a dynamic page will render identically on every attempt.

The image is not what you actually need
If the recipient needs selectable text, page numbers or print layout, create a PDF instead. If you need the page’s links and resources for local reference, use Web Archive. If you need markup for development work, save Page Source. Converting one format into another later can change layout, links or editability.

Optional extension: FullPage Screenshot for Safari
The Mac App Store lists FullPage Screenshot for Safari, a paid extension by Alfredo Grassau. Its listing advertises full-page PNG and PDF export and a more direct extension interface than Web Inspector. Customer reports in that listing also describe incomplete captures, including missed sections or blank content on some sites. Treat it as a convenience option rather than a guaranteed fix: install it only if you prefer an extension workflow, and test it on the specific pages you rely on.
