In a Playwright test that uses Argos, capture the entire scrollable page with await argosScreenshot(page, "homepage", { fullPage: true });. Add the Argos Playwright package and reporter, authenticate the CI run, and establish a default-branch baseline so pull-request screenshots have something to compare against.

Capture the full page in an Argos Playwright test

Argos uses Playwright for browser capture. Its helper accepts a full-page option; the example below assumes your test has already navigated to the page.

import { test } from "@playwright/test";
import { argosScreenshot } from "@argos-ci/playwright";

test("homepage visual check", async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto("https://example.com");
  await argosScreenshot(page, "homepage", { fullPage: true });
});

Replace the example URL with your application. The screenshot name, here homepage, identifies the capture in the Argos workflow. The fullPage: true option asks the helper to include the page beyond the current viewport.

Install and configure the Argos integration

Add the package

Install @argos-ci/playwright as a development dependency using your project’s package manager. Playwright itself must already be installed and usable in both local development and CI. Follow the Argos Playwright quickstart for the current install command and configuration details.

Register the reporter

Add @argos-ci/playwright/reporter to the reporters in playwright.config.ts. The reporter uploads screenshots and the relevant Playwright artifacts to Argos. Argos’s quickstart also shows configuring failure screenshots and traces; use those options if you want those artifacts uploaded with test failures.

By default, the quickstart stores screenshots in ./screenshots. Add that directory to .gitignore if you do not intend to commit generated captures.

Authenticate and run in CI

Configure Argos authentication for the CI job. The quickstart uses ARGOS_TOKEN; GitHub Actions can also use OIDC or tokenless authentication, as described in the Argos setup guide. Keep secrets in your CI provider’s secret store rather than committing them in the repository.

For GitHub Actions, the official quickstart’s flow checks out the repository, sets up Node, installs dependencies, installs Chromium with its system dependencies, and runs the Playwright tests with Argos authentication. Adapt Node and action versions to the versions supported by your project rather than copying old version pins unreviewed.

Establish a baseline before pull-request comparisons

Run the visual tests on the default branch first. Argos says pull-request builds can appear as orphan builds until a default-branch build establishes the comparison baseline. Once that baseline exists, pull-request captures can be reviewed against it.

Make full-page captures stable

A full-page capture includes more content than a viewport screenshot, so it can expose more dynamic regions: rotating promotions, timestamps, personalized content, live counters, or late-loading elements. A useful visual test makes the page state repeatable before capture.

  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
  • Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
  • Use stable test data and avoid content that changes on every run where possible.
  • Wait for application-specific content to finish loading before taking the screenshot. Argos’s current helper documentation says it waits for fonts, images, and network idle, and hides carets and scrollbars.
  • Hide or mask intentionally variable areas instead of loosening comparison across the whole page. Playwright supports screenshot masks and screenshot styling; consult the Playwright screenshots documentation for the API supported by your installed version.
  • Keep browser and operating-system environments consistent when generating and checking baselines. Font rasterization and anti-aliasing can differ across environments even when the page has not meaningfully changed.

Start with strict visual comparison. If a specific, legitimate source of rendering jitter remains, use a narrowly scoped mask or adjust a pixel-count or ratio tolerance deliberately. A broad tolerance can conceal real layout regressions.

Argos helper or native Playwright screenshot assertions?

Both approaches use Playwright to capture the page. The main difference is how snapshots and review are managed.

Approach Baseline and review Fits best when
Native Playwright toHaveScreenshot Baselines are kept alongside the test in the repository; teams review and update them through their repository workflow. You want snapshot files in source control and are comfortable reviewing and approving changes there.
Argos Playwright integration Playwright performs capture, and the Argos reporter uploads screenshots for hosted comparison and pull-request review. You want hosted visual-diff review rather than managing the whole baseline workflow in the repository.

Choose based on baseline storage, approval and update workflow, diff-review experience, and how consistently your CI rendering environment can be controlled. Argos is optional: a smaller suite or a team satisfied with repository-managed snapshots may have all it needs in native Playwright.

Troubleshoot common failures

The screenshot only shows the viewport

Check that the call includes the third argument { fullPage: true } and that the test is calling argosScreenshot from @argos-ci/playwright. Confirm the installed integration version supports the option by checking its current example and documentation.

Pull-request runs appear as orphan builds

Run the visual test on the repository’s default branch to create the baseline first. Argos identifies the missing default-branch baseline as the reason pull-request builds may be orphaned.

CI cannot launch the browser

Make sure the workflow installs the browser required by the Playwright project, including system dependencies. The Argos GitHub Actions quickstart includes a Chromium installation step with dependencies; align the browser installation with the browser your Playwright configuration actually uses.

Local and CI screenshots differ unexpectedly

Compare the browser version, operating system, installed fonts, viewport, device scale factor, and test data. Keep baseline generation and CI on a consistent rendering environment, then mask genuinely dynamic regions rather than hiding broad page areas.

The capture contains incomplete or shifting content

Wait for the specific content your application needs to render, and remove sources of nondeterminism such as live data or rotating modules from the test state. Although the Argos helper waits for fonts, images, and network idle, application-specific work may still require an explicit readiness condition in the test.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an image or PDF of a page outside this Argos visual-test workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request for PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output; see the API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with page verdict and billing information in response headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
